Key Features: Small footprint, colour laser MFP; Backlit LCD display; 35-sheet Automatic Document Feed; ReadIRIS Pro 12 software; Good eco credentials

Manufacturer: HP

Design and Features

Colour laser printers have been eclipsed in the last year or so by colour LED devices, but HP is fighting back with the snappily-named LaserJet Pro 100 Color MFP M175a. This device uses a tried and trusted colour laser engine, but should it be tried, tested and ultimately rejected as too slow?

The thing is, this is a carousel-based colour laser engine, which means that when printing colour, it builds up the page image by creating four part-images, one for each colour, on the photoconductor drum, before transferring the complete image to the paper. This can take up to four times as long as printing a black-only page, but the way around it is to have a fast enough engine that even one quarter-speed colour pages are still fast enough.

This all-black cased machine has a surprisingly small footprint and is reasonably low to the desk, too. Its 35-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) sits on top of its A4 flatbed scanner, with completed pages exiting just below.
There’s a flip-out paper support with a pop-up end-stop which increases the depth of the machine, but no further than the 150-sheet, fixed paper tray. It’s a shame this tray has no cover, as it leaves the paper stack susceptible to dust and spillages. There’s no second paper tray option, either, for those who need to expand its paper handling capacity.

The tall, narrow control panel hinges out from the left of the laser engine and may be locked in any of four positions. The 2-line by 16-character LCD

The good: The space-saving HP LaserJet Pro 100 serves up professional-quality color documents with three-way network connectivity and cloud printing. It has quality print result, display is backlit and as well as the standard controls for starting and stopping tasks, navigating the machine‘s menus and selecting the number of copies, there’s a special button for rotating the carousel, so you can access any of the four toner cartridges.

These, and the separate drum unit, which slides out from the front of the machine, are the only consumables and are easy to get at, though with rather low yields for a SOHO device.
This version of the printer has only a USB data connection, but there is a separate model which also offers cabled and wireless networking, too. Software support includes a copy of ReadIRIS Pro 12, a fine OCR application, as well as HP’s own scan and print drivers.

The bad: Print speeds are slower than average, and the lack of autoduplexing means more time and paper wasted, cost on toner, not really good on MAC.

The bottom line: The HP LaserJet Pro 100 is a solid color laser printer for personal use, but the high cost of consumables, slow print speeds, and missing features limit its productivity for home offices.

Ottawa — BlackBerry’s new chief executive cast off persistent talk of the smartphone maker’s demise, vowing on Monday that the company would pick itself back up and was “here to stay.”

“Reports of our death are greatly exaggerated,” John Chen, who was appointed interim chief executive last month, said in an open letter to customers.

“We are very much alive, thank you.”

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company helped create a culture of mobile users glued to smartphones, but lost its luster as many moved to iPhones or devices using Google’s Android software.

BlackBerry still has some 70 million subscribers worldwide, but most of these are using older handsets, with newer devices on the BlackBerry 10 platform failing to gain traction.

In September, the company announced that it was laying off 4,500 staff — or one third of its global workforce — after losing $965 million in its last quarter.

Two months later, it scrapped a search for a suitor and nixed a deal with its largest shareholder Fairfax Financial that would have taken the company private, sparking rampant speculation about its future.

“Our ‘for sale’ sign has been taken down and we are here to stay,” Chen said, adding: “We’re going back to our heritage and roots — delivering enterprise-grade, end-to-end mobile solutions.”

In his open letter, he said BlackBerry is committed to its handsets, messaging service and servers that manage mobile devices for companies.

Website Usability Testing

Testing is very important in the development of any web site and its long-term maintenance. While smaller web sites – especially those with more limited budgets – may not need to follow the formal testing procedures that are required for large-scale, commercial web sites, every site needs to be thoroughly tested to ensure that it’s error-free, user-friendly, accessible, and standards compliant.

Testing should be completed during each phase of a site’s development. Two of the most costly web project mistakes are to delay testing until just before launch, or not to test at all. Testing during production makes it easier to locate and resolve errors, and minimizes the chance of existing bugs being replicated throughout later stages of development. Early and continued testing can eliminate the need for the costly redesigns and other major fixes that can result from overlooked errors.

Do it early and often. Usability and visual design helps shape the product’s story. Testing at different stages helps us refine the story by uncovering user motivations, behaviors, as well as validating the assumptions we make during the creation process.
User testing doesn’t have to be lengthy, complicated or formal. The important thing to remember is to stop, validate and refine. When we were testing the Nokia Life app at the initial stage, we performed a lot of informal testing by asking family, friends, colleagues to perform specific tasks for key scenarios. From signing up and requesting a content, we were able to surface user motivations and behaviors by asking them to talk through what they saw and expected as they navigated through the experience.

The degree of independence avoids author bias and is often more effective at finding defects and failures. – International Software Testing Qualification Board (ISTQB)

Nigerian companies that must use software for their smooth operations are faced with issue of quality. Though there is yet to be an established standard agency to monitor issue pertaining to software development as it affects quality, serious companies are expected to ensure they develop applications that are of international standard. This, they can achieve by setting up the right testing team that check for errors before and after launch.

Some of them already have in-house testing team that is part of the development team. That is okay but not a sufficient arrangement for effective software deployment.

Having independent testing team offers a lot in advantages as highlighted below- from the lowest level of independence to the highest:

i Tests by the person who wrote the item

ii tests by another person within the same team, like another programmer

iii Tests by the person from some different group such as an independent test team.

iv Tests by a person from some different organization or company, such as outsourced testing or certification by an external body.

When we think about how independent the test team is? It is really very important to understand that independence is not an either/or condition, but a range:

At one end of the range lies the absence of independence, where the programmer performs testing within the programming team.

Moving toward independence, we find an integrated tester or group of testers working alongside the programmers, but still within and reporting to the development manager.

Then moving little bit more towards independence we might find a team of testers who are independent and outside the development team, but reporting to project management.

Near the other end of the continuum lies complete independence. We might see a separate test team reporting into the organization at a point equal to the development or project team. We might find specialists in the business domain (such as users of the system), specialists in technology (such as database experts), and specialists in testing (such as security testers, certification testers, or test automation experts) in a separate test team, as part of a larger independent test team, or as part of a contract, outsourced test team.

Benefits of independence testing:

An independent tester can repeatedly find out more, other, and different defects than a tester working within a programming team – or a tester who is by profession a programmer.

While business analysts, marketing staff, designers, and programmers bring their own assumptions to the specification and implementation of the item under test, an independent tester brings a different set of assumptions to testing and to reviews, which often helps in exposing the hidden defects and problems

An independent tester who reports to senior management can report his results honestly and without any concern for reprisal that might result from pointing out problems in coworkers’ or, worse yet, the manager’s work.

An independent test team often has a separate budget, which helps ensure the proper level of money is spent on tester training, testing tool, test equipment, etc.

In addition, in some organizations, testers in an independent test team may find it easier to have a career path that leads up into more senior roles in testing.

Nokia had been expected to launch its 6-inch Lumia 1520 Windows Phone at an event in New York City later this month, but The Verge has learned that the company has delayed the launch until next month. Sources familiar with Nokia’s plans have revealed to The Verge that the event is now tentatively scheduled for mid-October, and that Nokia may be planning a different location. Reuters originally reported details of the delay yesterday.

Although Microsoft is acquiring Nokia’s phone business, the company is still expected to go ahead and launch its 6-inch Lumia 1520 that has been widely leaked over the past few weeks. We’re told the device will debut on AT&T in November in black, white, red, and yellow colors. Nokia’s launch plans may have been delayed due to the Microsoft deal, but the company is still expected to launch a 10.1-inch Windows RT device codenamed Sirius. The tablet was recently pictured alongside other new hardware, and will likely be priced at $499. Microsoft is also planning to launch its own Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets next week, ahead of Nokia’s offering.

Effectiveness and productivity improvement are important because an employee can effectively execute his job duties. But if a job description isn’t tightly aligned to our expectations, we may not consider an employee to be productive. The word effective is defined as “producing a desired result, or ready for service or action.” If our employees produce work that is aligned with expectations and strategy, and they do it in a timely and efficient manner, then we have built a key component to ensure the success of our company.

Some tips that can make our workforce Productive and Effective are :

Increase team contact –

Optimize the amount of time we invest in our employees through the use of leading edge workforce management technology. This way we have been able to increase significantly the amount of time we spend with individuals in the team. This ensures a very positive environment in which our people understand their role in the success of our business.

Make your metrics work for you –

Knowing your own people is crucial; you have so much information about your own people, you should use this information as key lever to success. How do you do this? Profile both: what makes people likely to succeed and what makes them likely to fail – and who bucks this trend and what is different about their approach. It isn’t one size fits all but it is about creating the conditions where exceptional performance is most likely to happen.

Introduce a motivation scheme –

Motivation schemes that offer staff incentives, improves engagement and raises performance. They provide a focus for activity and generate interest, resulting in a good atmosphere and a productive workforce. Improved staff performance supports the attainment of business targets and objectives. This positive impact translates through the bottom line, generating a good return on investment for the company.

Learn to be flexible –

In my experience, the challenge is rarely about personal productivity. More frequently it concerns processes not delivering the right type of work to the right people and being flexible and open-minded to necessary adaptations and alterations.

Facilitate 360-degree feedback –

Criticism is a tough pill to swallow for anyone, but a formal program where you solicit feedback – good and bad – from leads/managers/colleagues will only make them, and your operation, better. Ask them for their honest, feedback without fear of repercussion and act on it. Collecting the feedback is one thing, but failing to act on it can often do more harm than good.

Allow employees to take ownership of their duties and goals –

When you allow employees to take ownership, you provide with them a valuable opportunity to learn how to manage their own success. Open communication and team work are essential. When the team knows how they fit into the overall purpose and they also know how their peers contribute to the purpose, then they are more connected and committed to the company’s success.

Samsung UNPACKED 2013 Episode II event in Berlin brought us three new Galaxy devices, just as expected. The Galaxy Note 3 phablet is definitely the most eagerly anticipated one among mobile phone fans, but Samsung has also refreshed the Galaxy Note 10.1 slate and brought us the brand new Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

It use to be the case that as technology developed, devices became smaller — colossal Walkmans were replaced by more svelte models, chunky Discmans by portable players barely bigger than the disc they were playing. There was a time when the fashion for cell phones took a similar route, but the current propensity for larger screens shows that this no longer rings true. The phone boasts of a 5.7 inch Super AMOLED display and a resolution of 1920 x 1080, it certainly risks being a power sucker but not when its backed up by a 3,200mAh battery.

With an impressive 3GB RAM and a 2.3GHz quad core processor(4g version) or a 1.9GHz Octa core (3G edition), speed is not an issue. Internal storage is either 32GB or 64GB with an expandable card slot which might be needed considering 13MP rear camera and 2MP front facer.

The Note 3 runs Android 4.3 and the launch date is set for september 25 in more than 140 countries. although US launch is slightly later.
