Today we are interviewing professional illustrator Brian Coldrick. Brain is a multifaceted artist. He created a fantastically fun, clever, and creepy series called “Behind You” which features a single illustration where a person is about to be attacked by something horrifying. The illustration is sometimes animated and is accompanied by a one or two sentence story. Brian also creates illustrations for the TV show “Doctor Who,” and has worked on comic covers for IDW comics. During the interview we discuss Brian’s career, his process for creating his illustrations, and his love of sloths.

To start off the show we are performing an original story we created that is inspired by one of Brian’s “Behind You” illustrations. The story is called “The Dusty Documents.”

As Dan prepares to exit the 9th Story, he's joined by author, narrator, and co-Creator / co-Producer of The Lift, Cynthia Lowman. They talk about The book, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less and the ideas of letting go of things, choosing what you say yes to, uncommitng, and more. It's important to focus on the things that matter most and the things that help you grow. These choices are often not simple and can even be painful, but we can only do so much. This doesn't mean you don't push yourself to achieve, but acceptance of our limits is the path to joy.

Greg Shaffer - 9th Story 411

Greg Shaffer visits the 9th Story.

Aside from doing funny impersonations and annoying Al on The Caveman Mafia Podcast, Greg (aka Zoltaire) is a graphic designer, artist and one time painter of painted over murals of the band Enigma and trees. He joins Jeanette and Dan to offer a unique perspective on Art, Branding, and Design – all powerful forms of storytelling.

Indie Creatives often say they want to learn how to use consistent branding to ensure their work reaches a wider audience, so the discussion focuses on this topic. We also discuss the pain of having your work set aside or destroyed. At the end of the show, we do silly voices, read a Paula Dean recipe for crab balls, and remember Morgan Freeman was Easy Reader on the Electric Company.

Greg designed the logos for 9th Story Studios, and our podcast Listen.

Abigailis the writer, director, and art director for Cadillac Dust, overseeing all tasks and jobs on this production. She is currently creating all of the storyboards, concept art, and character design (while doing numerous other tasks) for this short film.

Abigail is a freelance artist, creating horror/macabre oil paintings (and illustration work) for major companies and private clients. Abigail has done freelance work for such companies as Warner Brothers Television, the Sachs Media Group, and the Weber Group (just to name a few.) In her spare time, she enjoys playing the banjo, digging styles such as rockabilly and New Orleans jazz music.

Join Dan and Jeanette as they talk art, creativity, inspiration, and growing as an artist with the talented Abigail Braman.

Notes: Leland Palmer is not Dale Cooper, The “angry” artist is Bill Alexander, but he isn’t actually angry – he just seemed so to young Daniel who feared his accent.

Just a Story is a weekly podcast taking a look at the stories that we tell over and over again. What our myths and misdeeds, fears and fables say about us as humans.

Meet your guide on this journey, The Curator, and learn her secrets as you delve into the world of possibility, magic and the unknown. Merging the suspenseful style of mystery with the conventions of ghost stories and the peculiarity that only historical fact can provide, this podcast is not for the faint of heart.

Richard Ainsworth, the author and creator of the Widdowshins series returns for the second part of our discussion. In this segment we delve deeper into his experiences researching for Widdowshins and his experiences with the occult. We also talk a lot about the power of perseverance, the struggles and rewards of telling your story, and trying “The If” as in “What if I had….”

Widdowshins is a paranormal fantasy series that centers around a deceptively sleepy-looking village in the Northwest of England where the barriers between dimensions are thin and permeable; a nexus of all realities, where the past, present and future of all the known universe collide. It’s where the Holy Grail may be hidden, where the Lady of the Lake resides in a nearby reservoir, and where the Gateway to Hell lurks beneath an outdoor toilet. It is a kind of Check Point Charlie for the multiverse, where beings from elsewhere and elsewhen can pass into our world. As such, it must be constantly guarded…
