Summer celebrations are full speed ahead as road construction near the Foundry on 3rd progresses to the next phase.

The western section of Washington Street and the new intersection at Washington and Third streets will open on Tuesday, June 3, just in time for the kickoff of Concerts on the Square. Since road construction started over six weeks ago, traffic and pedestrians can once again expect full access to shops and restaurants on the 300 block.

“This is a very important step for our businesses in the Third Street Lifestyle Center,” said Mark Craig, general manager of Compass Properties. “It’s also a significant move in the continued revitalization and transformation of Downtown Wausau overall.” His words reflect the collective optimism of local business owners eager to welcome visitors downtown.

Wausau’s Summer Lineup is Sizzling

Concerts on the Square starts at 6 p.m. June 4 with Rising Phoenix rocking the 400 block. The concert series is packed with musical performances every Wednesday, including The Third Wheels, Brass Differential and Pacific Coast Highway. Clear for Takeoff 5K is set against the unique backdrop of the Downtown Wausau Airport on June 28. Participants enjoy pancake breakfasts, event shirts and goodie bags while supporting the Never Forgotten Honor Flight. ChalkFest  on June 28 and 29 turns the sidewalks of Wausau’s 400 block into a limitless canvas for artists of all ages. This annual art festival has wowed art enthusiasts from all over the Midwest since 2004.

Fourth of July fireworks light up the sky over the Downtown Wausau Airport in a dazzling tribute to America’s independence. Gates open at 6 p.m. on July 4 with fireworks at 9:15 p.m.

In an initiative that bridges education and industry, local high school students are stepping onto the dynamic construction site of Foundry on 3rd.

Stevens Construction and T. Wall Enterprises are hosting D.C. Everest tech ed students on Wednesday, April 30, which coincides with National Apprenticeship Day. This nationally recognized day showcases the importance of apprenticeship programs in providing training and careers in skilled trades.

The tour begins at 1 p.m. at the Stevens Construction job site trailer, where students get personal protective equipment (PPE).

Previously, the Wausau West Engineering and Technology class explored the construction site on April 16. The hands-on tour allowed the students to connect classroom knowledge with real-world applications, enhancing their understanding of potential career paths in construction and, more specifically, opportunities available in the Wausau area.

Theran Peterson, tech ed teacher at Wausau West, said several of his students are interested in civil engineering, construction management and the building trades. “This was the first construction site tour for the group, and they asked very insightful questions while staying highly engaged throughout the tour,” he said.

“The individuals from Stevens Construction and T. Wall Enterprises were spectacular hosts,” Peterson said. “They explained not only the construction process but also the process of acquiring the site, demolition of the mall, the design process and the future vision of the surrounding area.”

Hard-hat tours like this one significantly inspire young people to consider construction careers. Construction projects require skilled architects, engineers, project managers and various tradespeople like electricians, plumbers and carpenters.

Stevens Construction recognizes the value of on-site tours, especially with the growing demand for tradespeople today. “We enjoy providing tours that allow students to witness the complexities of construction,” said Derek Rinabarger, project executive for Stevens Construction. “Our hope is that they’ll gain an appreciation for this work and consider it for themselves.”

Based in Madison, Stevens Construction is one of the largest general contractors in the Upper Midwest. It specializes in multifamily and mixed-use buildings. It is currently leading the construction of the Foundry on 3rd, which opens in November.

Development on Track as Weather Cooperates

Construction at The Foundry on 3rd is advancing on schedule, with the south half of the building already framed to three floors and the fourth floor underway. Each floor takes approximately two weeks to complete, with the fifth floor expected to begin by mid-November. In the north half, the first floor is framed, the second floor is currently in progress and the third floor is scheduled to start in mid-November.

Concrete columns and footings for the skywalk bridge have been installed, with structural steel components arriving in November to connect The Foundry on 3rd to the HOM Furniture parking ramp. The arrival of windows and doors in early November will mark a significant milestone in the development process as the building continues to come to life.

Almost one year after opening its doors at 300 N. Third St., the Pinery is even more committed to the community. "Each drink sold supports a cause of the month, benefiting local organizations like the Boys & Girls Club and the Humane Society," Baker said. "There's a little hope in every cup."

The Pinery also collaborates with other local businesses, creating unique drinks that raise awareness for community initiatives. Currently, they're featuring a Back-to-School Pencil Lemonade with Children's Imaginarium, showcasing how local groups can work together creatively. The Pinery hosts game nights and book clubs and even provides a platform for local creators to showcase their work. "It's about building community inwards to grow outwards," Baker said.

Just across the street at 303 N. Third St., Forward Beverage is carving out a niche with its non-alcoholic functional cocktails. Owners Amy and Paul Yanzer are excited to launch a new nitro cocktail this fall, a unique offering in the region. "We applied for and were awarded a grant for small businesses in Wisconsin and Illinois to purchase our own equipment to make a specialty drink," Amy said.

Their new espresso nitrotini is a collaboration with the Pinery, which supplies the expresso. It will be available at Forward's taproom, where seven different flavors are currently on tap.

Since opening a year ago, Forward's beverages have gained attention. Customers share stories of their journeys toward sobriety and express gratitude for the tasty alternatives, which include some social seltzers with CBD.

The Yanzer's decision to open in downtown Wausau was strategic. "The plan for the Foundry apartments was one of the exciting factors that led us to lease this space because we knew how much potential there is for foot traffic," Amy said. She added that their first year in business went better than imagined. "Not only have we had a lot of customers, but we're now working with a distributor so our products are available statewide."

Community Sauna Comes to Downtown

Northern Lights Sauna, located at Whitewater Music Hall, is a new experience on the downtown scene. Business partners Heather Schuette and Brittany Burns drew inspiration from their visit to a sauna in Stevens Point. "We wanted sauna to be part of our daily lives and share it with others in our hometown," Schuette said.

Unveiling of a Mural on Historic Landmark Building

Art is also playing a pivotal role in revitalizing downtown Wausau, as seen by the vibrant murals popping up in recent years. Rocket Industrial sponsored the latest mural by artist Lindsey Cherek Waller, a central Wisconsin native who enjoys creating community-focused art. The large-scale painting on the Landmark Building recently debuted during the Festival of Arts on Sept. 7 and 8.

The mural features whimsical thank you bags and draws inspiration from Waller's family heritage, particularly the early years spent in her grandmother's restaurant. Waller reflects on how her grandmother's dedication to serving others has shaped her understanding of love and community, and the imagery in her work represents a "secret language" of symbols and sentiments passed down through generations. Through the thank you bags. Waller aims to celebrate the small acts of gratitude that contribute to a sense of belonging and connection.

She envisions her mural as a colorful moment that brings joy to the community and encourages people to reflect on the world they are co-creating. "The only way we survive is through joy, community, authenticity and gratitude," Waller said.

Before construction began, REI Engineering, a leading environmental consulting firm based in Wausau, conducted essential environmental assessments. The firm's meticulous approach facilitated a smoother construction process and helped build trust within the community regarding the project's integrity.

"It's been exciting to have my team involved," stated Ken Lassa, vice president of REI Engineering. "Opportunities like this don’t come around often."

Lassa believes the development will enhance the city and draw attention to Wausau's unique attractions, such as the kayak course and Granite Peak. "I remember when the east riverside was cluttered with rundown buildings and the mall was in disrepair. Those days are behind us. It’s an exciting time for our city," he added.

Amid a busy construction zone, two towering steel sculptures emerged in downtown Wausau on Tuesday. Created by the visionary artist David Hummer, these artistic works stand outside the Children's Imaginarium and HOM Furniture as powerful symbols of Wausau's readiness to welcome change and honor a rich heritage that flows as steadily as the Wisconsin River.

The monumental steel sculptures, dubbed Flow State I and II, were conceived by Hummer after discussions with Chuck Ghidorzi of Wausau Opportunity Zone (WOZ), who commissioned the art to enhance the developing area. "We are thrilled to bring these amazing sculptures to downtown Wausau without utilizing public funding," said Dave Eckmann, president of WOZ.

Hummer's vision aimed to “disrupt the horizontal plane of the transitional landscape.” He started out by sketching ideas and then collaborating with other local businesses to conceptualize the sculptures. Hummer reached out to local welder Eric Thomas, known for his metal bird sculptures on Stewart Avenue. Together, they crafted a skeletal structure at Art on Grand before moving to Pilot Metals at the Wausau Business Incubator for the final assembly and intricate stainless-steel wrapping.

The 24-foot-tall sculptures feature sweeping curves and twists to mimic flowing water over rocks. "The entire approach was to reconnect people with the river," Hummer said. The sculptures incorporate Corten steel designed to develop a rich patina over time, reflecting the river's dynamic nature.

Hummer found inspiration for the project's name in the term "flow state," which embodies an artist's creative process. "The flow state is crucial for artists, allowing them to navigate obstacles fearlessly," he said. This philosophy resonates with the ongoing development in downtown Wausau, where the community strives to shape the environment despite occasional challenges.

As Hummer reflected on the legacy of the sculptures in the public space, he hoped they would become enduring symbols of the community's connection to nature and its resilience. The abstract sculptures can adapt to the city's evolving identity. Hummer's collaboration with local talent and businesses sharing his vision emphasizes the vibrant arts scene, further showcasing Wausau as a cultural hub.

The new art forms punctuate Wausau's creative spirit while the adjacent Children's Imaginarium has become a significant gathering point since its opening eight months ago.

With 890 members and 6,000 students attending field trips, the museum is fulfilling its vision of being an engaging and educational space. Executive Director Julie Bollmann points to the museum's strong community partnerships as a key factor in its inviting atmosphere. From the colorful murals adorning the exterior of the building to the historical photos and new steel sculptures, the museum has become a canvas for local creativity. "I invite anyone to walk around downtown, grab a coffee, sit a while and enjoy the view," she said. "It's a completely different vibe than it was even six months ago."

The highly anticipated grand opening is Wednesday, December 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. After that, regular museum hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Members-only hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Wausau Opportunity Zone (WOZ) is pleased to announce the completion of the Second Street extension, new sidewalks and more parking in Wausau's downtown development zone, just in time for the highly anticipated Children's Imaginarium opening and holiday shopping season.

“It allows for easier entry and exit points, making it more convenient for people to reach their destinations,” said Dave Eckmann, president of WOZ. “Opening this region to traffic flow is another significant step in the overall urban revitalization of Wausau.”

Second Street—between Washington and Forest Streets—is open to two-way traffic, and sidewalks are paved along the street and in front of the Children’s Imaginarium, extending east to the former Sears Ramp. “The Third Street extension going south to meet up with Jackson Street will be constructed in late 2024 or early 2025,” said Allen Wesolowski, city engineer.

Progress at a Glance

• Returning ownership to its hometown roots, WOZ purchased the Wausau Center Mall in February 2020 with funding from the Dwight and Linda Davis Foundation and the Judd S. Alexander Foundation in partnership with the City of Wausau.
• Wausau Center Mall demolition started on May 21, 2021 at the former Sears building and moved west with minimal disruptions, stopping at the JC Penney building. HOM Furniture and two parking ramps remained open throughout this phase while summer concerts and annual events were in full swing.
• On July 21, 2021, demolition ended with the mall's main entrance falling, leaving 7.5 acres for the redevelopment to serve a sustainable and prosperous future. On-street parking was later added on Washington Street.
• Children's Imaginarium continued planning and raising funds throughout 2022 to be one of the first new attractions to open in the development zone.
• In June of 2022, WOZ released further plans of the mixed-use space to fortify downtown Wausau with housing, businesses and entertainment areas.
• Throughout the summer of 2023 WOZ worked closely with the DNR to successfully remediate and close the development site for the season until the summer of 2024 when construction on the Foundry on Third starts.
• Street construction started in July of 2023 to extend Second Street from Washington Street to Forest Street and eventually extend Third Street south to Jackson Street, with the Second Street extension ready for two-way traffic in November.

Second Street Extension is a Sign of Great Things to Come

One of the notable improvements in the development zone is the extension of Second Street, which now allows for two-way travel through the area for the first time. It also includes 14 on-street parking spaces. “The expansion not only enhances connectivity within the area, but it also offers a fresh perspective on the downtown,” said Eckmann. “The community gets to witness all the possibilities from a new angle which is truly inspiring.”

HOM Furniture, previously located within the mall, has a new main entrance facing Third Street, giving the store a new and improved presence. Construction on the north façade of both HOM and Children’s Imaginarium began in July.

Enclosed parking will continue to be available at the Sears and J.C. Penney ramps, however, the elevator in the Penney’s ramp is not operational as reconstruction plans are currently under consideration.

"Construction crews have done an exceptional job to improve the area's infrastructure thus far. Their work sets the foundation for the exciting housing and business developments that lie ahead in 2024 and beyond," said Eckmann.

As the development zone continues to evolve and prosper, WOZ and the City of Wausau remain committed to creating a thriving downtown that offers enhanced accessibility, connectivity and opportunities for all residents and visitors.

Streets and Sidewalks to be Ready by Mid-October, Paving the Way for New Children’s Imaginarium

While Wausau welcomes new businesses to the River District, progress continues around the downtown development zone to improve infrastructure and create a more accessible environment for these and future establishments destined to call Wausau home.

Dave Eckmann, president of Wausau Opportunity Zone, is inspired by the growth and improvement of downtown Wausau. "It showcases the entrepreneurial spirit and creativity that thrives within this community," he said.

The active presence of new businesses also demonstrates a commitment to serving the local market. Amy Yanzer, Forward Beverage Co.'s owner, is preparing her new taproom at 303 North Third Street. She provides non-alcoholic beverages suitable for people of all ages.

"Our menu ranges from soft cocktails that my kids love to social seltzers that help adults relax without alcohol. We ensure our beverages are delicious and free from additional or artificial sugars, sweeteners or dyes," she said.

The new establishments will decidedly complement Wausau's current urban landscape, aligning with the upcoming opening of the Children's Imaginarium and housing options on the horizon.

This week revealed what's transpiring inside the museum as windows were installed in the building's façade. HOM Furniture, the adjacent building, also received new windows. Starting Monday, September 25, KidZibits will install the highly anticipated exhibits in the museum. The St. Paul-based exhibit fabricator created six interactive displays firmly rooted in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

One of the exhibits ironically replicates real construction scenes reminiscent of those ongoing in downtown Wausau. "The Construct It gallery invites guests to put on their hardhats and explore the building process with various tools and materials," said Julie Bollmann, new executive director of Children's Imaginarium.

Bollmann, a mother of two, has lived in Wausau for about 17 years and held various leadership roles within the Wausau School District and UW-Stevens Point. She also served for three years on the museum's board of directors.

The daily transformation of Children's Imaginarium has been exciting for Bollmann since starting in August. "This opportunity breathes life into this part of our community and will bring more foot traffic to downtown Wausau," said Bollmann.

Road construction around the museum should be wrapped up before the doors open later this fall. "The contractor is currently working on installing the storm sewer system and grading the roadway for the pavement and sidewalk installation," said Allen Wesolowski, city engineer.

For decades, Wausau’s riverfront has captivated the imaginations of many who envision its possibilities encompassing housing, recreation and commercial ventures. The picturesque area — stretching south of Bridge Street to Thomas Street — is a source of inspiration for residents and visitors alike. With its potential for development, the riverfront draws the attention of city planners, entrepreneurs and residents who recognize the opportunity to create something exceptional in the heart of the city.

Dotted along the riverfront are success stories of how public parks and buildings went from concept to creation, such as Whitewater Park, Riverlife Park, Dudley Tower and WOW. Developers and dedicated citizens invested years and capital, bringing these worthy endeavors to fruition.

In recent years, changing consumer habits have made urban living more desirable, generating demand for affordable housing in downtown Wausau. The Foundry on 3rd will offer 154 urban apartments and mixed-use spaces. The city’s goal is to create a more pedestrian-friendly and highly connected area. “The ongoing improvements to the riverfront are becoming increasingly important as more residents will depend on these amenities in the coming years,” said Dave Eckmann, president of Wausau Opportunity Zone.

The Wisconsin River has a long history with the city, dating back to the logging era of the 1830s. Today’s urban developers have highlighted the outstanding advantages of having a riverfront within walking distance of the city center. Their vision includes a high-quality riverfront housing district seamlessly integrated with the downtown through landscaping, lighting, trail connections and other amenities.

Here are some of the latest riverfront developments:

 

The Great Pinery Heritage Waterway

The Great Pinery Heritage Waterway is a shining example of Wausau’s commitment to being a prominent water sports and recreation destination. The 108-mile-long water trail consists of three rivers winding through central Wisconsin, starting at the Hat Rapids Dam in Oneida County and ending in Portage County at the Lake DuBay Dam.

Park Service recently visited the area around Clarke Island to provide technical assistance in updating the water trail and kayak course. The three-day visit was part of a non-monetary grant that also focused on a dock launch system. Hadley Landing will be a handicapped-accessible canoe and kayak launch for paddlers that utilizes the portage at Clarke Island. The design of the Clarke Island campus also allows for 52 parking spaces. “It’s part of an effort to enhance accessibility and make the whitewater course more recreational,” said Bill Bertram, president of the Wausau and Marathon County Parks and Recreation Foundation. Bertram expects exciting developments on the horizon in the years ahead.

To further support the growth and promotion of the water trail, the foundation received a marketing grant to boost awareness and attract more kayakers to the region. A grand opening event is planned for Saturday, August 26, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., starting at WOW and heading to the Lake DuBay Dam.

Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce New Headquarters

The chamber recently relocated to the historic depot building, which was established in 1899 as the Chicago and Northwestern Depot, where trains connected Wausau to the rest of the world. “This beautiful restoration symbolizes the city’s enduring importance as a major hub of activity in the state,” said Eckmann.

Clarke Island WPS Powerhouse

Built in 1904, the Clarke Island Powerhouse played a significant role in establishing Wausau as an economic driver in central Wisconsin, harnessing the hydropower of the Wisconsin River. The Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Wisconsin Public Service to preserve and repurpose the powerhouse campus. Plans are underway to make it a dynamic event center focused on business and innovation gatherings. Some of the program offerings include the chamber’s Transformational Leadership, Senior Business Leader Mentors, The Branch and Workforce Hub.

A thousand-square-foot deck overlooking the Wisconsin River and a garden patio overlooking the Wausau Whitewater kayak course are in the works, along with a space to host corporate community events with groups of up to 150 people.

River Edge Parkway

The River Edge Parkway project is intended to link parks, walkways and multiuse trails along the Wisconsin River over several decades. The trail network is a conduit for alternative transportation, allowing bicycles, pedestrians other non-motorized modes of travel access to and from residential and commercial areas throughout the corridor. “This has the potential to increase activity and commerce along the riverfront and attract young professionals to the area,” said Eckmann.

Bike Share

Bikes are currently available between two stations — River Drive underneath Bridge Street near Riverlife Park and the other station south of the parking lots. Users can access the bikes for a minimal rate using an app on their smartphones and scan a QR code on the bike.

Streets and Parking

Continual improvements of surface parking lots, streets, sidewalks and underutilized areas is an ongoing endeavor that holds great importance as it enhances walkability and facilitates connections to the riverfront.

HOM Furniture has called Wausau home since opening its 17^th location in 2019. The Minnesota-based business is one of the largest furniture retailers in the nation, with the Wausau hub being an ideal location within their distribution network. It originally opened in the Wausau Center Mall and has since become a destination that draws shoppers into the city.

Currently on Forest St., HOM Furniture is the latest building in Downtown Wausau's redevelopment zone to see changes. Demolition work on the north facade began in mid-June and is expected to be completed soon.

The new storefront facing Third St. will reflect contemporary design and enhance the store's image, aligning it with the modern tone of the developing area. "Improving the visual aesthetic not only benefits the business but also boosts the appearance of our business district, making it a more vibrant environment," said Dave Eckmann, president of Wausau Opportunity Zone. “The updates will truly reflect the future look and feel of the redevelopment.”

HOM is also updating the building's foundation wall and structural systems to meet current building codes.

“Wausau is fortunate to have such a partner in the business community who shares our commitment and dedication to improving this region,” said Eckmann.

HOM has been collaborating with the project development teams for the updates to the north facade. John Pierce, real estate director of HOM, stated that they are currently waiting for the arrival of windows and doors, which will give them a better idea of when the project will be completed. "The goal right now is to have everything buttoned up by the end of August or early September for both the HOM Furniture north facade and the Children's Imaginarium's north facade," he said.

Set to open in the fall, Children's Imaginarium will rent nearly 14,000 square feet from HOM in the north end of the building. “The Children’s Imaginarium appreciates the opportunity to collaborate with HOM furniture through a tenant agreement that demonstrates our shared commitment to the continued revitalization of downtown,” said Maggie Gordon, president of Children’s Imaginarium. Fortunately, the north facade work will not disrupt access to HOM. The only temporary disruption expected will affect the docks and customer pickup access, starting at the end of July and finishing in August.

Additionally, street construction has begun this week for the area's underground utilities and temporary roads. HOM is working to minimize disruptions for its staff and customers. "We are committed to decreasing inconveniences and effectively communicating any potential changes along the way," said Pierce.

Ample parking is still available in the former Sears parking ramp on Fifth St. and Forest St.

Two-Way Traffic Heading Downtown

Implementing two-way streets started this week, as crews install sewer and water at Second and Forest Streets and move northwards in the coming weeks. The temporary roads, spanning 78 feet wide, will be ready in early fall. They’ll be pedestrian friendly and provide extended parking options in the downtown area into 2024.
