068: 2021 Year in Review Mark McFarlane and Ben Hasbrouck

The lights will not go out over the winter at the Autobahn Country Club Podcast they just go dim. This is our last show for our 4th season and 2021 has been a great year for the podcast and for the club. We have seen many things upgraded and added to an already stellar club. This could not have been a better year. And just as always we head into the last few events at the club as old man winter is warming up his engine.

This show we get to do both video and audio for show number 68 the 2021 Year in Review. Producer Mark Mcfarlane and Driving Instructor and Member Relations Ben Hasbrouck join with a special surprise guest who happen to stop by to make us a smile a little more.

The podcast will not go dormmate and we will be starting right away preparing for next year and getting the best possible content and interviews. The podcast team is looking forward to next year and beyond!

Our Club gets an App Upgrade!

The new and improved Autobahn Country Club App has arrived. There are a lot of improvements to the old app and what a perfect time to get to know the app. Sarah Gimbel and Ron Dabisch join us on a very special video and audio podcast to introduce all the members to it. We do a deep dive into how to get everything out of the app. There are many many new features over the old app. Some of them include: ordering food right from the app, making reservations for touring cars, and checking out your monthly charges.

October is somewhat bittersweet at the Autobahn Country Club. It is just chucked full of events after events, but it also is the last month of the season. We only have 2 shows left for the season 4 of the podcast as we wrap up a fantastic year at the club. We have one more interview show followed by our recap show at the end of October. No better way to start the final act of 2021 with 2 fantastic gentlemen who took time out of their Friday afternoon to jump behind the microphone.

This show we welcome back Kyle Nadeau, who in the past has been a recurring guest on the show but has been so busy lately he has been difficult to track down. And a funny thing happened on the way to the South Timing Building to record the show, I offered Autobahn's own racing car driver Jordan Missig a ride in the Graybeal Racing Team’s golf cart. Little did he know I had ulterior motives and I drove him right to the recording studio for this show. Jordan graciously accepted the co-host microphone and so, we have a special show with guest host Jordan Missig as we get entertained by the one and only Kyle Nadeau from Track Operations.

048: Indy Car Legend Bobby Rahal Part 2

This is Part 2 of my interview with Bobby Rahal.

In 1986, I went to my first Indianapolis 500 race. I will never forget May of 1986. Myself and 5 of my college friends went to the time trials, practice days, carburetor day and the race, Sunday May 25th. The first time the race was completly rained out. We went back home excited to come back the next day Monday May 26th. But that also was a rain out. We were broke college kids and there was no way we were going to let our tickets go unused. Back in the day it was impossible to get good seats at the race. But we were lucky enough to know a few people who helped us out and found some tickets. As I remember it was my karate teacher and union official who found 4 tickets and a buddy of mine, his dad work for the telephone company who was a sponsor of the event, found us a couple more. That year was special in so many ways as Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier drove a corvette as the pace car. A very special day for a future fighter pilot like myself. Back to the race. With 2 days rained out we came back the following Saturday May 31 to watch Autobahn's very own Bobby Rahal take the checkered flag. I have to be honest, I waited until the 3rd season to intervew Bobby becasue I wanted to get better and try and figure out my interview style and profect my game. In January of 2020 we got together in his garage at the track 33 years after watching him cross the finish line at the Indy 500. It was a memorable day to get to spend a morning with the racing ledgend. This is the Podcast's first 2 part interview. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Formula Regional Americas Driver Jordan Missig, club member, radical champion, karting champion...well the list goes on and on. Jordon started at the club when he was just 17 years old. The Autobahn County Club gave him endless seat time as he quickly excelled in karts then cars. The club offers so much in driving opportunities and he takes advantaged of them all. The podcast first met Jordon when along with his father joined the podcast in season 1 where we talked about how he got started racing and involved in the club. In this show we catch up with Jordan about his transitions in driving and his current racing series Formula Regional Americas.

045 : Autobahn Member Highlight: Chris Kemp

The podcast conducted its first in home interview as we traveled to Chris Kemp’s farm down in central Illinois. Chris is a member and avid racer spending as much time on 2 wheels as 4. He started out as a super moto KTM racer before moving to radicals. He also was the reason the Graybeal family joined the Autobahn Country Club as one day while he was coaching me and my son on the motocross track he mentioned that there is the great race club just up the road from our respective homes. The podcast likes to go into interviews with as little background as possible on the guest, so the interviewer and the listeners are go into the interview on the same level. Karts karts karts. I am a big fan of kart racing. At the Autobahn Country Club our largest kart-racing group is the Ignite Spec Racing Series. In a few words "It's a total blast". Starting only a few years ago the Margay Ignite Spec racing series has grown exponentially. Drivers of all ages get behind the wheel of a reliable, fun, exciting, fast, affordable sprint racing kart. For over 2 years the podcast has worked on getting Margay on the show. We finally did last May when Sean Kennedy of Margay Racing sat down with us for a full interview. Margay is located in St. Louis and thier home track is the Gateway Kartplex across the Illinois boarder from St Louis. As a racing family (cars and karts) we have been around the entire Margay team over the past few years. We have spent time with Sean as a tuner, coach, and all around hand holder for our family and we are eager to hear more about him, his history with his first job at the Autobahn Country Club, and how Margay became a dominate player in the spec racing world. I met with Brandon Collins in late Decenber of 2019 to condut this interview. Brandon won his 2nd Autobahn Spec Miatia Championship in 2019 at the age of 22. An avid kart racer he has only been racing cars a few years. This past year was capped off with a Nomination for the 2019 Mazda Road to 24 Shootout. Over 100 people started the evening at one of the new garages beginning with appetizers and then moved on and visited two more garages for dinner and deserts. We want to give a special thank you to the Club for providing the food and drink for the evening. My wife, Heidi, and I were the last ones to leave and we had a blast! Founding member Brian Kubinski grew up 2 houses away from the Indy Racing Legend Dale Coyne. This show we get to hear how Brian started an amazing racing career. Brain tells the story of how he went from cleaning Indy car parts, mowing Dale's yard, to being a winning driver in everything from karts, open wheel, and stock cars. My local mechanic used to race with Brian and I have heard a lot of stories about his career so I was very excited to finally sit down and hear his story first hand. I do interviews all year long. I also try to mix up the interviews. They never really go in order. Some I do early in the year and it takes a while to get the perfect time. This episode is one that I did way back in the spring. Getting everyone coordinated and set up is sometimes challenging. While all my guest are very accommodating sometimes it is just well...difficult getting together. This interview I wanted to do last year and we waited for the perfect time. And well the activities at the kart track have really picked up. I new the participation at the kart track was going to increase this year so I wanted to wait for all the new members to get settled in before this interview. We have lots of new karters so I think now is the perfect time to introduce all the new members and all the old members to a constant personality at the kart track. Mario Santellano is a master kart mechanic. He is one of the first people I met years ago and was first to come to my aid when I needed help. So lets welcome Mario Satellano to the PodCast!

Britt Casey Jr. grew up at the Autobahn Country Club. He started racing motorcycles and quickly switched to four wheels. When I say he grew up at the track he really did. He started in karts and then making his presence known racing Miata’s at a very young age. He was discovered at the track and still spends a lot of time at the club.

He gives us a little back stage look into planning and organizing events at the club. We really get to know Ron and it was great to sit down with him. This wee we have two interviews. The unsung heroes at the track are the first responders. Tom Sener is the Safety Coordinator and has a pretty interesting story how the over all safety program was started. Tom is a retired firefighter and paramedic who started working at the club as soon as it opened. Tom tells us about the amazing amount of training the safety team has and how everything is coordinated. He also gives us some safety tips when your trip around the track does not turn out as planned. Our second interview is with Balton Aulls of My Laps. My Laps is the provider of the timing system the kart track and the main track uses for scorekeeping.

Welcome to our second podcast. The plan is for 2 podcasts a month released on Wednesdays. That might change as we put together more interviews and as the season moves along.

2006 was a turning point for Francesco D’Avola he is the owner of Team Stradale located by the front entrance of the Autobahn Country Club. In 2006, Francesco went from one dream job to another. Team Stradale is one of the race shops located right on the track. One of the most appealing benefits for joining the club is the availability to get mechanical help right at the track. These on-site race shops operate year around and help with everything from changing tires to building a new race car.

If you have ever been at the club you cant miss the Radical. It is a full up racecar and one of the fastest on track options . Francesco tells us how he inherited his father’s passion for cars and how Team Stradale became the largest volume dealer for Radicals in North America.

I’m John Graybeal and I’ll be your host as we get to know the people and events that make up the Autobahn. The Autobahn County Club is a racing club located in Joliet IL. About 45 minutes south of Chicago.

The plan is to release the show on Wednesdays and will highlight an interview with a member of the Autobahn staff, club member, or personality that make up the club. We’ll wrap up the show with a club staff member detailing the upcoming events.
