Finding our identity in our profession, role or title can make us feel less than, but rooting our identity in God makes us grounded regardless of what we do. Our identity is shaped in silence, not in the spectacular. David’s life teaches us this lesson as before becoming king, he was just a shepherd. His role as a shepherd was viewed as insignificant, and even his brothers used it to demean and exclude him. However, being a shepherd taught David the skills and character he needed to become a good king. Ultimately, finding our identity in God can help us realize our worth and purpose, even in seemingly insignificant roles.

Just like an orange, our hearts are protected by a thick, bitter peel that we use to shield ourselves from the pain of the world. But what lies beneath the bitterness is something sweet, tender, and life-giving. The process of forgiveness is like removing that peel, allowing our hearts to be healed and our true selves to be revealed. So let’s explore why we forgive and how we can do it practically. It’s not easy, but it’s necessary for true healing and genuine relationships.

The tension between cultural norms and biblical teachings can be confusing, but we’re here to help you navigate it. Learn how to set up boundaries that honor Christ and offer genuine love and empathy, just like He did. It starts with a slow ‘yes’ and a quick ‘no’, and accepting that ‘No is a complete sentence’. When we make people the target of our anger, it dehumanizes the person and makes them an object to be angry at and not a person worthy of our love and respect. In order to pursue righteous anger, we need to love people well and redirect our anger onto the right target.

Sloth essentially says, “I want God to love me, but being changed by his love is too hard. I want the comfort and security of being loved by God, without having to give back, sacrifice anything, take responsibility, or invest myself in the relationship over the long haul.” This is lazy love… and not what God’s called us to.

Whether we want to admit it or not, we are all sexually broken people. Lust can certainly deliver on instant pleasure. But it also delivers on disrespect and shame –of others and ourselves. How do we fight the vice of lust?

The Bible offers 500 verses on prayer, less than 500 verses on faith, but more than 2,000 verses on money and possessions. Why so much? It’s not because God is greedy and needs our money…but because we are greedy and it can be a huge issue! The only way to uproot Greed is to live a life of Generosity.

We routinely think of ourselves too much, don’t we? Inside each of us, there is this longing to be seen, loved, and celebrated. Vainglory takes root when the desire for recognition and approval get excessive & disordered… when we’re only seeking the attention and applause of others instead of God. How do we loosen the grip of vainglory?

Most of us have been going to church for a while…week after week… soaking in all we talk about. The danger is we can become professional Observers. When we aren’t applying the word God gives us we get comfortable with sitting. If we continue to sit & soak, we’ll begin to sour. This isn’t God’s will for us. His will for us to go and do something with the word He has given us! What’s the one word that God has for YOU in this time?

God doesn’t want to use the Bible as a weapon against us. He wants to use Scripture to break those hurts and pain open to be a thing of beauty.

Sunday morning Bible isn’t enough to sustain you for the week. If we want to know what God wants for our lives, we are going to have to dive into the Bible for ourselves….on a daily basis!

As a church, we call people to take their next step towards Jesus.

Not their next step to look like us.

Not their next step to behave correctly.

To look, act, and react like Jesus, we need to keep him at the center and invite everyone we can into that.

Both individually and as a church we need to be reminded of who we are and why we do what we do. The best part is it’s nothing new. Jesus lived his life loving God, loving people and serving the world. We get to do the same thing.

Out of everything Moses saw and did, the most amazing part of his story is that he knew God like a friend. And even still, he doubted because he is human just. We all doubt, we all struggle, we all sin. But none of that stopped Moses from developing intimacy with God.

The question we need to ask each day looks the same as the Israelites thousands of years ago: “What does God want to do today?” When we keep God at the center of our lives that calling to wait or follow becomes more clear.

If you want to have good boundaries in life, stop being so concerned about the boundary but be concerned about the God who put it there. Trust the God that rescued you out of Egypt, who carried you on angels wings, met with Moses, and made the mountains tremble.

Where God is calling you to lessen your load or to step up and use your gifts? We all have a part to play in the body of Christ. When Moses delegated out the responsibility to others and allowed them to use their gifting, the whole community benefited, not just Moses. When he tried to do it all himself, the whole community suffered.

If you’re struggling with something in your life that just seems impossible, what if instead of running away or trying to muscle up and fight this on your own, you took a different approach? What if facing the boogeymen in our life started with submitting to God and actually believing He’s bigger and more powerful than anything we could battle?

We will all make mistakes – it’s inevitable. Let’s stop acting like our failures disqualify us from God’s love when in reality our set backs may lead us to a keener awareness of it.

The world will consistently remind you of who you used to be and what your shortcomings are. But when we place our life in the hands of Jesus, God says, This is my son or daughter, whom I love!”

The story of Moses started long before he did. It was birthed in promises made hundreds of years before his birth. It started with “And”…connecting his story to the past and future.

Like Inigo in the Princess Bride, it’s easy imagine Jesus saying: “You keep on saying these things, but I don’t think they mean what you think they mean.” Thankfully, he doesn’t just say this like Inigo did and drop it… he loves us enough to correct us and point us in the right direction.

When we make a decision to follow Jesus we become one of his disciples and he is our teacher. We can’t learn from our teacher if we don’t listen to what he commands.

You’re being formed today. Are you being conformed to the patterns of this world, or transformed into the image of Christ?

Jesus was focused on bringing the Good News of the Kingdom wherever he went. Jesus looked different because he brought hope, healing, and teaching that was practical and prompted a response from his listeners. His Kingdom Focus influenced how he treated every person he came across, every word he said, and every hurt he healed. Can you imagine what it would look like if we all had this Kingdom Focus? As followers of Jesus, what makes us different? What’s our focus for this life? What kind of news are we proclaiming? Let us be different than the world around us as we follow Jesus.

The people who lived at the time of Jesus believed in miracles and deliverance, but Jesus was different in that he performed miracles and set people free from demonic oppression. We believe that God calls us as his followers to do even greater things then He did because He told us we would. God is a God of miracles then and now. Our God is a God who knows how to celebrate and he built celebration into his relationship with the Jewish people. But by the time of Jesus, the “religious” people focused more on cynicism, critique and following the laws and forgot the spirit of celebration that God had intended. Jesus is different in that he calls us to reclaim the heart of celebration in our relationship with Him and with others. Where is your heart right now? Is it focused on celebration or cynicism?

In Matthew 5, Jesus turns the world upside with his teachings. In the Kingdom of God, meekness & humility inherit the earth; the persecuted and mocked are blessed by God and the poor inherit the Kingdom. Statements like this make Jesus different. He was committed to a life of nonviolence & enemy love. There were no exceptions, no excuses, and no “well…what if’s…” and he calls us to the same. May we, in a world of violent options, hope in Jesus, trust in the eternal and live with hope in God’s kingdom to live now with our future in mind.
