Millions of Americans across our great country gathered with family last week for Thanksgiving. I hope you enjoyed all of God’s blessings. Memories were made that will last a lifetime. Sadly, for one West Virginia family, Thanksgiving will hereafter forever remind them of 2025—the year their precious daughter was assassinated in Washington, D.C., by an Islamist terrorist who should not have been in America. This horrific act of violence is yet another reminder that the only reason we are able to live as free men and women in this extraordinary nation is that heroic Americans are willing to lay down their lives to keep us safe. One such heroine was West Virginia Army National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom. She graduated two years ago from Webster County High School. Friends and family described her as a “peacekeeper,” quick to help others. Sarah dreamed of becoming an FBI agent someday. That led her to join the National Guard as part of a police unit, hoping this might eventually help her achieve her dream of being in federal law enforcement. She was serving in our nation’s capital when she was murdered. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey attended the candlelight vigil for her in Webster Springs. He said she was someone who “loved her state, she loved her country, and she wanted to serve.”1 Sarah Beckstrom was raised a Christian. Her father sat at her bedside holding her hand when she succumbed to her wounds. “My baby girl has passed to glory,”2 he said. Another West Virginia guardsman, U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, was also grievously wounded and is clinging to life as I write this. He and his family are in our prayers. This cannot be said often enough: Without young men and women like Sarah Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe, we and our families would be at the mercy of men who worship death. One such man is the 29-year-old assassin who killed Sarah Beckstrom—Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal. He was brought into the United States by the Biden–Harris administration after their disastrous, mismanaged withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. An estimated 200,000 Afghans came to America under the Operation Allies Welcome program. Many were not “vetted” properly because of the chaos that broke out when the Kabul airport was not properly secured. That poor planning led to thirteen American servicemen and servicewomen being killed in a terrorist bombing at the airport. Lakanwal had worked with the U.S. government in Afghanistan for more than a decade, starting at age fifteen. Reportedly, he was in an Afghan special forces team known as Zero Unit, controlled by the CIA. When he was brought to America, he settled in Bellingham, Washington, with his wife, five children, and possibly two nephews. In November, he left Bellingham and drove across the United States to Washington, D.C., where he killed Sarah. This wasn’t an isolated incident. The day before the attack, another Afghan “refugee” was arrested for threatening to bomb sites in Fort Worth, Texas. This White House sprang into action. The Trump administration announced that all pending asylum decisions and the processing of immigration requests by Afghan nationals have been suspended “pending further review of security and vetting protocols.”3 President Trump declared, “We must now reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here or add benefit to our country.”4 In addition, the State Department has suspended visas for anyone traveling with an Afghan passport. These steps are necessary because, during the Biden presidency, millions of people who came from cultures rejecting our Judeo-Christian traditions and values were allowed to enter America. This was often justified in the name of compassion, but that compassion was not tempered by discernment and common sense. America’s founders drew many of the key ideas of our Republic from the Bible. In the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, they wrote the most important words of our new nation: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”5 The “Creator” is the God of the Bible—the one and only God. Based on that truth, our country has brought more freedom and opportunity to more people than any other nation in the world. Without America, the world would sink into another dark age. When migrants, refugees, immigrants, legal or illegal, enter our country, they do not “magically” embrace the key principles on which our nation was built. Most Islamic countries are overwhelmingly antisemitic. In addition, in countries such as Afghanistan and Somalia, women are treated as possessions. The United States government has made no attempt in recent years to determine whether someone coming to America is bringing with them cultural ideas, hatred, rejection of women’s rights, and other attitudes inconsistent with our traditions and values. Many of our institutions, including schools, no longer attempt to assimilate immigrant populations. Universities are often teaching anti-American history. The first responsibility of our government must be to keep our citizens—of all ethnicities—safe. Irresponsible mass migration is a threat to public safety. As we get ready to celebrate our 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, we must immediately reform immigration policies to ensure that we allow people whom our country needs to come to America. They must want to embrace American ideals, including ordered liberty under God. We must stop importing hate. If we don’t, we are unlikely to celebrate a 300th birthday. The Power of Prayer

Sophia Forchas is a 13-year-old student at the Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On August 27, Sophia was with her classmates for the beginning of the school-year worship service. During the service, a demon-possessed assailant opened fire on the students, killing two and injuring thirty. Sophia was grievously wounded. I don’t casually use the words “demon-possessed.” The killer hated Jesus. He drew a picture of himself looking in a mirror with a demon staring back at him. Doctors were not hopeful about Sophia’s prognosis. A bullet was lodged in her brain. She was placed in a medically induced coma. Fearful that the brain swelling would cause more damage, part of her skull had to be removed. Doctors doubted she would ever fully recover. Yet in late September, a recuperating, smiling Sophia returned home and was reunited with her family and friends. Her parents praised the incredible medical team at Hennepin County Medical Center and the rehab specialists at Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul. Her father told reporters how her personality was “shining through once more”1 and described how she was walking and swimming now. Then he said, “Each step she takes is a living testament to the boundless grace of God and the miraculous power of prayer.”2 This story of the power of faith and prayer that led to Sophia’s miraculous healing should be inspirational and easy for everyone to celebrate. But we live in a time of tremendous hostility toward Christianity from our secular, cultural, and political elites. I won’t forget what happened in the hours and days immediately after the murderous attack on the children. Christians all over America, including our team at JDFI, promptly offered our condolences and prayers. Families of the children were grateful to know their brothers and sisters in Christ were on their knees, asking for God’s mercy and healing in the face of such an evil act. However, many secularists, including government officials, were outraged that Christians’ first instinct was to pray. The not-so-subtle message they delivered was that prayers were useless. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said, “Don’t just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying . . . they were in a church.”3 Similar comments were made by Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, who was Kamala Harris’ vice-presidential running mate. Governor Newsom of California, who hopes to run for president in 2028, also appeared to deride prayer as useless, posting on X, “These children were literally praying as they got shot at.”4 After this tragedy, the derision often expressed about praying was said with great anger. Former Biden press secretary and current MSNBC host Jen Psaki wrote, “Prayer is not freaking enough. Prayers does (sic) not end school shootings . . . prayer does not bring these kids back . . . enough with the thoughts and prayer.”5 Her anger is revealing. Many on the secular Left clearly do not understand the purpose of prayer. Christians don’t pray to God expecting Him to grant wishes as if He were a mythical genie in a bottle. Prayer is meant to praise God, to seek forgiveness, to thank Him for our blessings, and to ask for His favor and protection in our lives. We pray for help in bad times and, yes, we pray for miracles. Our prayers help us to deal with pain and suffering. I believe the prayers, even during the shooting, were heard by God. He was at that Minneapolis church, in a very real way, on the day of that evil attack. Think about what transpired: A church is packed with little children and a small number of adults. Nobody inside has a gun. A crazed lunatic, probably a demonically possessed Christ-hater, is outside with three weapons. He mocks God as he begins his attack. It is a miracle that the number of deaths was not much higher. Part of why this terrible event wasn’t worse is because the Christians in the church that morning did Christ-like things. Christian fathers barricaded the doors so the hater couldn’t get in. Other Christian adults in the room shepherded the children and led them in prayer. Older Christian siblings protected their little brothers and sisters, in some cases lying on top of them to keep them from getting shot. We often say that when Christ returns, He will not have an R or D next to His name. It is also true that, in today’s political struggle in America, the globalist secular Left is at war with our Judeo-Christian traditions and values. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a liberal Democrat, was perfectly comfortable leading the nation in prayer6 at the beginning of D-Day. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. prayed without ceasing as he led a civil rights movement that broke the back of segregation. He based his whole appeal on the truth that each of us is made in the image of God and have dignity, value, and worth. Either man, if alive today, would be condemned by the secular Left for relying on the God of the Bible. This hostility to Christian prayer is not an isolated trend. Acts of violence against churches, including arson and desecration involving Satanic symbols, has grown over the last decade. Christians who love Jesus and love America are regularly smeared with the label “Christian nationalist.” We must be vigilant in protecting our religious liberty. Christianity is the most persecuted faith in the world. We must not allow persecution to prevail here. JDFI is dedicated to that task. But today, we can and should celebrate the good news about one family’s victory over evil and hate. Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The big take-aways, according to Bauer, were: 1) The moderators fact-checked Vance on abortion law in Minnesota. They were dead wrong. Walz signed a law in Minnesota that allows abortion through nine months of pregnancy and grants legal protections to abortion providers who administer no life-saving medical intervention to babies who survive an abortion, even when they are full-term. The Minnesota Department of Health reported that eight babies died this way since Walz signed the bill into law. 2) Walz, to justify mass illegal immigration, quoted Matthew 25:40, “And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’” Context is important. There is much theological debate on what Jesus meant by this, but some experts say He may have been referring to His disciples. But suggesting society must extend this grace as mass amnesty to 10+ million lawbreaking individuals is likely a stretch and a poor biblical interpretation. 3) Applying the governor’s exegesis, one could also strongly argue that vice presidential candidate Walz could include preborn children in “the least of these.”

Reflections on the Origin of Thanksgiving and Its Influence on America

In this week's episode, Gary Bauer embarks on a journey that traces the origins of the first Thanksgiving celebrated by the Pilgrims in the autumn of 1621. This first Thanksgiving came as a result of a harsh 1620 winter, where as many as half the original colonists died. It was after a strong crop harvest the following year that the Pilgrims decided to hold a day of celebration and prayer, and they invited their Native American friends, who had helped them along the way, to join them. Fast forward 168 years, when our nation’s first President, George Washington, issued the Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1789, which described in its opening sentence what the occasion was all about. President Washington wrote: “Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor…” Seventy-four years later, Abraham Lincoln in his 1863 proclamation urged all Americans to observe the last Thursday of November “… as a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.” The fact that Lincoln could call for such a day even during the sufferings of the Civil War demonstrates how much he believed that all our blessings came from the “Most High God.” With this act, the American tradition of Thanksgiving was ensconced into our culture. May we never forget.

The same kinds of marches occurred all over the world, including on Remembrance Day in London, where tens of thousands of anti-Israel Muslims organized identical activities and marches. But Bauer says there is some good news. On Tuesday, November 14, more than 290,000 Americans held a somber and peaceful march on the Washington, D.C. Mall in support of Israel. This was a beautiful and encouraging site. As Christians, we must continue to pray for Israel in this time of peril and also for Jews in our local communities. After all, Jesus said in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
