This is Part 2 of our GRIEF episode.

Many of the works on today’s program commemorate those who have transitioned beyond life, but our GRIEF episode explores something broader and deeper than death. There is a sublingual thread tying the rawest expressions of grief with the creation of sound. There are no words strong enough to support the weight of grief. Grief is something you feel involuntarily, almost like an automatic response – a sound that leaks out of you. It is beyond our control or conscious understanding. And yet we all share this human experience. Grief is the price we pay for love.

GRIEF: in it

March is one of the worst months in Calgary. Winter darkness still falls across the land, but gone is the glittering white twinkle of those early snow-falls. We are in the long, interminable, muddy stretch towards Spring. This is a particularly dangerous time for human creatures: statistically, the highest rates of death in Canada transpire between December and March each year. On a philosophical level, March marks a pre-Spring mourning unfolding in each of us – grief as an expression of radical change.

NUM: a feature

For the first episode of 2026, we’re shifting our focus to highlight one local duo, NUM. Comprised of sound artists, electroacoustic musicians, and multimedia artists, Maryam Sirvan and Milad Bagheri, NUM originated in Northern Iran. After studying in Georgia, Maryam & Milad moved to Calgary to continue their academic explorations several years ago. At the end of 2025, they released an album called “Seas Coming for Me.” This album was recorded at the National Music Centre with support from Calgary Arts Development. Our episode today follows Maryam & Milad’s journey through sound – music as a resistance, a collaborative life-long action, and a gateway to new worlds. We’re featuring work from their latest album, alongside older work that contextualizes this album.
While the Northern Hemisphere enters into a festive winter season, we’re returning to the spooky spirit of Autumn for Part 2 of RADIO WHISPERS. This month's episode features experimental music, spoken word, and sound art leaning into the ethereal hauntings of radio. Artists explore the strange space between frequencies, literally or metaphorically, covering everything from field recordings on shortwave radio to spooky spoken word stories about the life (and death) of domestic silk moths.

RADIO WHISPERS: haunting radio & radio hauntings // Part 1

We took a brief break in October to make space on CJSW for coverage of Calgary’s municipal election. This month we’re back with a belated Halloween episode featuring experimental music, spoken word, and sound art leaning in to the ethereal hauntings of radio. We’re featuring artists exploring the strange mysteries unearthed when wandering between frequencies, literally or metaphorically. We received so many submissions, we’ve decided to split this theme into two episodes. This is Part 1 of 2.
This is our last episode of the Summer, and we’ve programmed a languid listening excursion through the sound-based work of 3 artists, each with an extended sound piece. This episode is intended as a sprawling meditation, allowing the listener a slower, more expansive listening experience. As we move between seasons, we allow ourselves one last stretch through the warmth of Summer into the cool swirl of Autumn.
For our languid August episode, we’re listening to two projects by artists reflecting on ancient Greek mythology and philosophy: The Odyssey by Homer, as seen through the eyes of Calypso, and Hyle & Eidos, understandings of matter and form first posited by Aristotle. These works are watery, abstract, mesmerizing, and elemental ~ a perfect end to Summer.
For our June & July episodes, we’re turning our eyes (and ears) skyward for an exploration of atmospheric sounds, ambient music, and cloudy noises. Part 2 deconstructs abstract and literal relationships with the theme, ranging from “mysterious powers,” sonic wanderlust, spatial compositions, and dreamlike worlds, to literal field recordings of jet-planes flying across the sky. A fun note: this program was edited in an airplane while we were, quite literally, "a shape in the clouds."

THE SOUND OF HOPE: edge of darkness, brink of light

For many, the last few months have felt hopeless. The cold & dark of winter, groundswell of totalitarianism, and regular seasonal malaise has left us straining to find anything good to hold onto. As Winter creeps towards the Spring, we’ve been seeking The Sound of Hope. Artists, musicians, and sound-based practitioners from around the world were invited to share their own interpretation of this sound, reflecting the place where their optimism resides and flourishes in an ever-expanding ripple of positive possibilities.

STATIC/SHIFT: sonic shapes emerging from the snow

For our February program, we are leaning into the double-meanings of “snow,” both as a natural weather phenomenon of Canadian winters, and a type of static or visual noise. The static on a television set is ever-shifting, like a blizzard. On today’s program, sonic forms vibrate in and out of being and familiar sounds hide in the static; artists share sounds that reveal themselves as you listen, emerging like shapes melting through the snow.
For many, December is a month of feasting. For our last episode of 2024, we invited local, national, and international sound artists to submit delicious sounds, ranging from literal recordings of food being prepared and consumed, to the strange, hyper-specific noises that they just love. We’re setting the table for a veritable feast of strange, scrumptious, and occasionally disgusting sound art – this month, variety is the spice.
This month, we’re listening to the voices of animals, plants, and ecosystems outside our normal human understanding. From the barking of street dogs, to the whispering mycelial networks of forests, to the soundscapes of marine life in the world’s busiest sea, we’re sharing sound art that amplifies the “more than human” world – a phrase coined by ecologist-philosopher David Abram in 1996 to describe the living world beyond human beings.
Our July episode responds to a 5-week water crisis still resolving in Calgary, where a massive pipe rupture led to the fear of taps running dry to over a million citizens. We expanded this anxiety into an abstract exploration of pressure, uncertainty, and water as a catalyst for sound.
This month, we're exploring spatial sounds, as they relate to the built environment, domesticity, and anthropocentric spaces.
This month’s theme is NEW GREEN: shifting, sprouting, shy & splendorous. Late Autumn in Calgary is like a dream, floating in between the hard glittering whiteness of wintertime and grey, nebulous days of Fall. Nights grow longer towards the Hibernal Solstice, and mammals feel a natural pull towards sleep. Normally, as people, we balance our mammalian impulses against human responsibilities, but this month’s episode of EARS HAVE EYES invites you to give in, to lay in the dark and fall into a waking slumber as sound artists guide you into R.E.M....

This is FOREST PERSPECTIVE: Part 2.

In North America, it’s been a Summer of smoke, evacuations, and loss – not just for people, but for entire ecosystems. Wildfires are a natural forest cleansing process, but the type of wildfires we’re seeing in our carbon-superheated world are faster, hotter, and more pervasive than ever before. In acknowledgement of July as the hottest month ever recorded in human history, this month’s radio program invited local, national, and international sound artists to reflect on the non-human perspectives of forests.

FOREST PERSPECTIVE asks: how can we learn to think on the micro and macro scales of the forest, to prioritize the perspective of our non-human kin? Can radio be used as a tool for rewilding, building empathy and action between human listeners and the forests that surround, touch, and sustain us?

FOREST PERSPECTIVE: whispers, wildfires, and rewilding words (Part 1)

In Western Canada, like so many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, smoke from nearby wildfires intermittently fills the sky, painting the sun electric pink. In acknowledgement of the hottest July on record, this month’s radio program invited artists to reflect on the non-human perspectives of forests.

What does it mean to think like a tree? To sway in unison with the wind and breath unwanted toxins from the air? To gather and chart histories through carbon? To touch and share nutrients by networks of mycelium, running like gossamer threads through the mysterious underground places of the forest? What does it mean to house animals and tree forts? To be cut down for lumber or catch fire and burn…

In a broader sense, this episode of EARS HAVE EYES asks: can radio be used as a tool for rewilding? For planting seeds of sound to build empathy and action between human listeners and the forests that surround, touch, and sustain us?

This is FOREST PERSPECTIVE: Part 1. Part 2 will air on the second Wednesday of September, 2023.
SOUND DEATH // Part 2 draws from endangered, delicate, and increasingly rare sounds, soundscapes, and ideas. Some works on today’s program are related to human death and decomposition; others focus on overbreeding, extinction, fictional field recordings, and mythical explorations of sleep as a death-like (and yet, life-like) state of being.
This month, we're featuring work from Fragments of Sonic Extinction (FOSE) a group exhibition in Munich, Germany and an interactive website. FOSE explores the extinction of natural sounds, focusing on the sonic character of the extinction process and its relationship with cultural histories and global catastrophes related to the anthropocene. The curators commissioned eight new works from artists across the globe, presented live for an exhibition in Munich this May, and released on a multimedia website you can access from home: www.sonicextinction.net. This episode features an interview with the co-curators, Kalas Liebfried (Munich) and Laura Margaret Ramsey (Toronto).
EARS HAVE EYES is a monthly program featuring sound art, spoken word, and experimental music submitted by local, national, and international artists. Today’s theme, RADIANT WAVES, comes from the invisible transmissions moving through our bodies at all times - washing over us and our environment, emitting outwards from inside us, passing through us without our noticing, flowing back and forth in an infinite connection between ‘self’ and ‘world.’

SLOW REVEAL: hidden beneath the Winter sheath, released by thaw of Spring

The work on this month’s program arrive as an emergence - shaking off the cold and rust and loneliness of Wintertime, and flowering outwards into the sun. As we here in Calgary/Mohkinstsis emerge from a cold winter into the uncertain thaw of Spring, we share the residual creative output of that long, dark time. Today's compositions respond to the sprouting of nature after the winter subsides, the slow portrait of a person through documentary storytelling, the revealing of a place through field recordings, the unfolding of feelings through music…. each piece reveals something about emerging into a new awareness, environment, or context - as if melting through the snow.

SYNAESTHETICS: do ears have eyes?

This month, we're celebrating the One Year Anniversary of EARS HAVE EYES! We started imagining this radio show during The Hibernation Project (our annual collaborative wintertime art series) as a response to the global pandemic and subsequent social distancing. We were trying to figure out ways to share art spaces that don't require physical proximity between people, but could still feel intimate.

As we see it, radio is one of the most intimate mediums. It arrives in your ears as clear as a whisper, without sight - or rather, with incidental imagery, whatever your eyes happen to be seeing (for those of us with vision) at the moment of reception. We love the act of turning on the radio and arriving in a temporary world, intersecting with whatever’s going on already. How do we look with our ears, and listen with our eyes?

FUTURE CASTING: science fiction sounds and speculative stories

For our first episode of 2023, we’re turning our ears towards science fiction sounds & speculative stories. The new year elicits speculation about the future. Where are we going? In a time marked by uncertainty and shadowed by pandemic, war, climate crisis, and social reckoning, how can sound pair with imagination to expand our sense of what’s possible? This episode of EARS HAVE EYES invited participation from artists forecasting and spell-casting the future. Whether instrumental or narrative, dystopian or utopian, outer-spacey or inner-spacey, technical or magical, this month’s episode invited artists to squint into the distance, imagining what could be.

This month, we're highlighting sound-based artworks exploring DECAY as an abstract or literal phenomenon. In the organic world, decay is tied to end-of-life cycles and decomposition through bacteria and fungi. In music, decay references the time it takes for a sound to ring out, for a note to disappear into silence. But decay is so much more. A sound can decay, a garbage dump can rot, a person’s faith in their political system can degrade over time. Anything whole can begin to decay, but this process is just a part of the cycle of recession and growth – decay is useful. It nourishes. It makes fertilizer and comfortable homes for hibernating creatures. Do not be fooled: decay is not a dead process, it is alive with happenings. Decay is the home of transformation.
A storm can be literal or conceptual. In this Summer of profound environmental catastrophe, both interpretations held true at different moments. A storm is a breaking point, an eruptive moment of chaos, but it is usually long-brewing, perhaps even anticipated. Sometimes you can watch a storm come slide across the prairies all day long, see it forming in the distance and drawing ever nearer, until suddenly you're inside it, and all you can do is weather the storm until it passes.
Our program this month features work from local, national, and international sound artists across Turtle Island, Asia, and Western and Central Europe. Their work is challenging - rising in voices of dissent, instruments of revolution, calls for decolonization, field recordings from political protests, responses to anti-abortion legislation, and artworks shining light on everyday injustice. And yet, what is challenging to listen to is also empowering to say. Each participant speaks from their heart, sometimes in riddles, sometimes in musical compositions, and sometimes in blazing words. The terrain we’re covering today is broad and specific to each artist’s point of view, but the common thread is thick and daring. On this Summer day, we invite you to hear these red hot works, and let them light a fire within you.
RISING WATER: over, around, and through

Rising water is personal and political, caught between the cold tinkle of ice in a glass on a hot summer day, and the slow rise of oceans brought about by carbon dioxide emissions melting polar ice caps. Water is a caress and a rush, essential and deadly. Here in Calgary/Mohkinstsis, located at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers, we are approaching the 9th anniversary of the 2013 flood. We consider the tension between how rivers move, like snakes across the landscape, shifting in a serpentine and every-changing pathway, and our built environment, home to hundreds of thousands of Calgarians, constructed from right angles of wood and steel and concrete, and spilling out across a flood plain.

Rising water is personal. Rising water is communal. Rising water is global. The artists on this week’s program explore the theme through storytelling, myth, metaphor, and soundscape, inviting you to wade in, beginning - as always - with your ears.

JOURNEY: sound walks, travel, and traversing the land

From road trips to immigration, meditations on nationhood to outer space travel, the upcoming sound works meditate on the theme of JOURNEY through place-ness - the places we’ve been, the places we are, the places we move through, come from, escape, dwell in, get stuck, stick out, are displaced from, yearn for, and aim towards.

The idea of 'place' is not solid, but unfolding in simultaneous layers, dependent on personal embodiment, acknowledged histories, and cultural perspectives. Lucy Lippard talks about place as “multicentred,” localized in a map of memories, political and personal. “All places,” she writes, “exist somewhere between the inside and the outside view of them, the ways in which they compare to, and contrast with, other places.”
The sound works on this program explore,
deconstruct, or reimagine the relationship between sound and time. Artists on THE TIME BETWEEN US address time as a human experience, knowledge and learning passed
between generations, grief as a process of time unfolding, time travel, and
sound as a signifier for the passing, slowing down, speeding up, and stopping
of time.

THE TIME BETWEEN US // PART 1: duration & anticipation, chronological or nonlinear

In this program, sound artists, musicians, and storytellers explore, deconstruct, and reimagine the relationship between sound and time. Some compositions are nostalgic, others philosophical; some dissect grief, others reflect on the accumulations of time. A sonic excursion across decades and right back to the moment these soundwaves touch your eardrums, the time between us narrows just a little bit through the enduring sound works of these artists.

True to form, we've split this program into two parts, spread across radio time. Stay tuned for THE TIME BETWEEN US // Part 2.

What is the relationship between soundscapes and landscapes? Between sound and place? Between wildness and wilderness? Our second episode of EARS HAVE EYES uses Wild(er)ness as a theme for artists, musicians, and journalists to explore the too-often ignored sonorous space beyond human soundscapes. Beautiful, spatial, observational, and at times political, these soundscapes invite the listener on a wild adventure - ears first.

EARS HAVE EYES: spatial conjuring and ear-specific art for the radio

The first of three radio-based Hibernation themes, EARS HAVE EYES: spatial conjuring and ear specific art for the radio explores the interspace between senses. This radio program invited artists to submit audio works exploring the spatial aspects of sound to “illustrate” invisible worlds. Whether creating synaesthetic experiences, mapping the relationship between sound, sight, and identity, or using sonic means to create shapes, volumes, or places, EARS HAVE EYES invites the listener to reconsider the relationship between sight and sound.
