Sometimes you have a design dilemma and find that many of the solutions on the market don’t quite fit your specific needs or aesthetic. Case in point, our giant flat screen tv. While I do like the frame tv’s that allow you to display artwork, the sizes available are much too small for our large wall and 10 ft long cabinet. As I contemplated other ways to hide the unsightly beast - sliding doors, mirrors, shutters, or hanging a large tapestry or piece of artwork - it dawned on me! I could design a giant roll up art canvas that would work on a pulley system just like a roller shade does - and poof, the black box of doom would be hidden in an instant! So, I got to work making a prototype of my idea….

The first challenge was finding a company that could print a canvas large enough to cover, and overlap, our tv. I ended up using Royal Canvas and made a few modifications to the photo. In order to wrap the canvas around the dowel and top mounting board, I added a 10” white border, and for the width, had them bleed the photo to the edge with no border.

Because I was so excited to make my prototype and didn’t want to wait to get started, I dug through some of my old files and decided to use a photo I had taken years ago in Big Sur. Once I have perfected my design, I’ll take something specifically for the room. But this will do for now! I like the California coastal vibes.

As for making it into a roll-up shade I consulted Google, but in the end, didn’t need any instructions because I’m extremely fortunate to be married to a man who can, quite literally, make anything. We picked up all of the supplies at Home Depot - the cotton rope, pulleys, wood board, wall brackets, and dowel. Always a fan of recycling, he made the rope tie down with an old set of dive weights and a boat cleat. This is what we use to securely hold the shade up!

From the photo above, you can see how, when rolled up, it tucks in just over the top of the tv and just below the wood plank, and in the photo below, when rolled down, it sits just above the cabinet in order to hide our speaker bar.

Now let’s talk about some of my thoughts on the design, a few challenges, and ways I plan to improve it next time!

When we first hung the canvas, the dowel (which we thought would be heavy enough) didn’t have enough weight to help the canvas roll up and down with ease. My husband’s quick fix was to splice a long cut down the center of a heavy pvc pipe, and slip it over the wood dowel to add some weight, which worked great! But as we can see here, it’s kind of ugly. No one can see the pvc pipe unless they squeeze up next to the wall, but I know it’s there and plan to change it with the next iteration of my design. One thought is drilling out the center of a larger dowel and inserting weights…we’ll see. It’s a process.

The other element I’m rethinking is how (or if I even want to) redesign the sides where the wood board at the top juts out from the wall. On one hand, I really like the idea that you can see the mechanisms and that it’s not a large art print. People are so surprised when they see us roll it up for the first time! They always think it’s just artwork. By having the cotton rope and the board ends exposed, to me, it feels more…original, artistic?

Being that the canvas is very large, it takes a tiny bit of finagling when you start to roll it up, to keep it from creasing. At first I thought this might be problematic, but after many uses, there haven’t been any creases. We’ve now gotten used to it and don’t think twice about it’s “quirks” in rolling it up and down. In fact it takes only seconds!

And there you have it, my creative design solution for hiding the giant eyesore! I was going to hold off posting my idea until I had the design more flushed out and perfected, but I believe sharing and learning about the process can be just as interesting as seeing a finished product, sometimes more so.

Apologies for the fact that I don’t have step-by-step instructions. This really wasn’t meant to be a diy post, but more a conversation about creativity and design, and how they intersect to construct solutions in new, unique, and inspiring ways.

I really see that this concept could have so much potential…you could use your own original painting or artwork, vacation and travel photos, family pictures, scanned antique maps, or historical photos that have special meaning to you. Anything that can be transferred onto a canvas! I hope this leaves you feeling inspired and would love to hear your thoughts!

Soft throw blankets, scented candles, and pumpkins are fall classics that we know and love (although the pumpkin spice flavor craze may be a little more divisive), but lately I’ve been thinking about autumnal things that still bring on cozy feelings, but that may be a little more, unexpected. Rather than simply bringing in pretty, warm toned decor, I wanted to make the season feel like an experience by exploring it through our Five Senses. 1• TOUCH

Fall is all about the earthy textures, and I’m particularly drawn to leather and wood right now. Here are a few decor pieces that would bring in rich texture. The more varied textures you have, the more visually layered and cozy your space will feel.

2• TASTE

Enjoying delicious, freshly baked spiced goods are one of the best things about the cooler months! Bake all the pumpkin bread and cinnamon rolls while you can, and here are a few more delicious ideas or flavors you may not have tried before.

3• SMELL

I’ve heard that smell is one of the strongest senses we have, especially when it comes to making memories, and fall is one of the most distinctive seasons when it comes to scent, known for cinnamon, spice, and other warm scents. Here are a couple scent ideas that are still warm and cozy, but not extremely sweet or spicy.

4• SOUND

When I think of the sounds of fall, I think of the blustery wind rustling branches outside, or even the crackling of a fire, but I also think of nostalgic, soft, and acoustic music; here are a couple ways to enjoy the autumnal tunes.

5• SIGHT

Bringing nature indoors is a fast and easy way to embrace the seasons, whether that’s through actual leaves and branches, or through artwork that nods to the seasonal changes and natural elements that are characteristic of fall.

I hope that you are able to embrace the coziness and comfort of fall this year, whether it’s through baking pumpkin bread, or bringing in some dried botanicals. The little things we do to feed our senses make life more beautiful and full.

I recently stumbled across this home tour and fell in love. The gorgeous kitchen is filled with trinkets and treasures found and gathered over time, and because of that, it’s filled with character and charm. It’s the home of John Derian, decoupage artist and decor shop owner, but what I admire the most about all his work and his home, is how collected and natural it feels.

You may remember my previous post about How To Be Inspired - French Greenhouse, and in this next installment, I want to use John’s gorgeous, collected kitchen as a jumping off point for how you might reinterpret the space for your own home. John’s home was left mostly un-renovated to appreciate the timeworn finishes - history is spilling from every corner, so most of the items are vintage and one of a kind. Below are some of the ways I was inspired by his kitchen. I’d really like to hear what you take note of in the comments. Studying the images as art helps us to conceptualize them in our own way.

As a former sea captain’s home, there are nods to the ocean throughout, from a seashell collection in the glass cabinet to the nautical artwork on the walls. Natural collections are best gathered during your own explorations through nature, and they only add to the layered, collected feel of a vintage-filled home.

I hope that this post leaves you feeling inspired to bring a little bit of vintage character into your own home. Remember, it’s not about replicating exactly what we see in others’ homes, it’s about figuring out what we truly love about them, and incorporating it into your own personal style. When I was in high school, I spent several summers working at the Carlsbad Caverns National Park selling turquoise jewelry to tourists. I thought it was a pretty sweet gig, making a king's ransom of minimum wage, while having the chance to practice speaking French with unsuspecting customers visiting from abroad. Early each morning, I would park my car in a grocery store parking lot and take the 40 minute ride to work aboard the company bus. I would spend much of that time reading books or staring out the window at the vast desert landscape, lost in thought. Looking back now, I see that it was the beginning of my morning quiet time ritual, one that I still practice to this day.

But getting back to my story about selling turquoise jewelry. You see, I despised it. It was my birthstone, and while other family members had gorgeous rare gemstones like ruby, emerald, and diamond! - mine was a rock. Teenage jealousy aside, I also felt that turquoise was just plain dull. Growing up in the desert of New Mexico, it was something that could easily be found on any nature walk just outside my front door, no mining required. There didn’t seem to be anything special or attractive about it. So for years, decades even, I avoided it like the plague.

But as you probably already know, what we find appealing tends to change and evolve over time. Just like with certain foods, our sense of taste changes with age (hello peas, I used to hate), the same goes with personal style. I’m not talking specifically about the constantly changing fashion trends, but more about what we are magnetically drawn to when it comes to beauty - both inner and outward, as we journey through life.

Somewhere in my late twenties, I found myself making friends with my birthstone. I saw it with new (more mature) eyes and slowly embraced that maybe it was special after all. And in exactly how the law of attraction works, I began to see it everywhere - in antique stores and at flea markets, in magazines, and also recalled how fashion icon Ralph Lauren embraced turquoise jewelry from the very start of his career - and continues to do so today.

As my fondness grew, I started buying a few pieces here and there, a bracelet and a ring or two. And then one day, while digging through old shoe boxes of jewelry and memorabilia, discovered that much to my surprise, I had bought a few pieces during those teenage years when I was boldly declaring my objections. Life has a funny way of coming full circle doesn’t it.

Since then, I always take a peek at antique store jewelry counters, or a vendors display at the flea market, in hopes that I might find another piece that speaks to my heart and reminds me exactly who I am, and where I came from.

I don’t know about you, but I’m really missing travel - the excitement of waking up somewhere new and experiencing the unique sights, sounds, and flavors of a place. I’m particularly missing my annual trip to France to host The Academy and have been reminiscing about the last six years I’ve spent gathering women from around the world for a week of inspiration and creativity. In an effort to travel vicariously with you, I’m sharing how we created this beautiful table setting to celebrate our final evening together, gathered at the table with a delicious meal, and give you the recipe for our aptly named - French Farewell Salad.

During the week we have most of our meals casually on the patio, but to make our last dinner feel a little more special, we set up an enormous antique table in the middle of the barn. The light streaming in as the sun set was pure golden magic.

The table setting unfolded organically. An antique French sheet was used for the tablecloth and pops of green were added for a fresh, vibrant table setting. It contrasted perfectly with the warm toned and rough textured barn. I also filled the table with glass yogurt cups that we repurposed into votives. The French make the best yogurt, so my team and I would each have one for breakfast, and as you can imagine, we accumulated plenty by the end of the week!

The centerpiece was a metal florist vase filled with tree branches we foraged from the grounds and vineyard, and the mismatched chairs were collected from around the chateau. I love table settings that feel natural, collected, and imperfect.

After a week of being spoiled with rich baked dishes, decadent desserts, and all the bread (and cheese) in France, we were craving something light, crisp, and green! Our personal chef, Paris trained Marisa Curatolo, has the ability to spontaneously whip together the most delicious food in a flash and came up with this superb salad. The sweetness of the apples, the nuttiness of the almonds, and the hint of richness from the Roquefort all came together in perfect harmony.

One of the easiest elements of the salad is the classic French dressing, just a little olive oil and vinegar, with a dose of Dijon mustard. It became a running joke among our team that Marisa was in love with Dijon! She would sneak a little bit of grainy mustard into almost every dish, and even though it wasn’t immediately noticeable, it added a lovely depth of flavor.

Wherever you are in the world, you can recreate this French evening - just whip up this salad, pop open a bottle of wine, and gather around a table with friends or family for a long, leisurely meal filled with conversation. The magic lies not just in the food, but in the French spirit of Joie de Vivre - the prioritizing of life’s little pleasures!

Continuing with our interview series of creative female entrepreneurs, I want to introduce you to my friend, Lisa Romerein. Lisa is an incredibly talented and successful photographer who has captured countless homes and locations all over the world - you may have seen her work already and not even realized it! Her images are regularly published in national magazines and books, such as The House that Pinterest Built and Patina Farm, just to name a few. Seeing her name on a call sheet brings me so much joy, knowing I’ll have another opportunity to work alongside her. She is the ultimate professional and working with her has been a highlight of my career. I think you’re going to enjoy getting to know more about Lisa, including her favorite photography gear, what fuels her creativity, and her idea of the ultimate day off!

What was your first professional experience in photography? 

I started as a photojournalist with the Los Angeles Times and then went to the Orange County Register.  I spent 5 years in newspapers, which was an amazing training ground to think on my feet and handle shooting quickly in any situation.  I was at the Los Angeles Times when the LA riots happened.  It is a far cry from the pretty pictures I take today!

What or who are your favorite subjects to photograph?

I am working on a book for Lotusland, which is considered one of the top 10 gardens of the world.  It was been so fun to immerse myself in the macro and micro of it.  I also really enjoy shooting food and architecture and interiors.  They all feed my soul in different ways.

How do you fuel your creativity and stay inspired?

Travel that is quiet and restorative is a big way that I refuel.  When I am relaxed I feel my mind relaxes and I am able to tap into a creative flow.

Any travel destinations you've been dreaming about?

So many!  Don’t know when that will happen again so my list is getting longer!  New Zealand, some of the far reaches of the Norway, Faroe Islands, Glacier National Park, I could go on and on…

What are your top photography tools or equipment?

I couldn’t live without foam core. It is the cheapest of my equipment but one of the most important next to the camera - I shoot with Canon. I also use Zylights constantly; they are a portable, focusable LED light. Finally, my 100mm macro lens; it is so sharp and transformative.

Any tips for beginner or amateur photographers?

Photograph what you love and keep shooting. Editing can be tedious, but that is when you learn what works and what doesn’t. 

Can you share any favorite books, podcasts, movies, or music?

Just finished watching the HBO series My Brilliant Friend. So beautifully shot. I am very inspired by great cinematography. 

I have been listening to Joni and Alex during the pandemic (very soothing music).  I am also a big Brandi Carlisle fan.

I love the podcast, Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, This American Life, and Revisionist History by Malcolm Gladwell.

Describe your ultimate day off!

It is simple: workout, take a soaking tub, read a book, and play cards - with a glass of wine!

Yay, it’s Friday! Or does it feel like a Wednesday to you? I know it can feel like they all blend together now. I’ve been keeping busy with coaching clients and moving the shop over to the main site so we’re not running two websites. Bringing it all in house feels good and like the right time to do it. There will be new inventory from France is coming soon! Today I thought I’d bring back another old school post - Friday Favorites! I’ve missed these simple types of posts and hope you have too. Here are some things I’ve been loving lately, from my favorite flowy dress to what I’m reading.

A FEW RECENT BUYS

1. I have been wearing this maxi dress non-stop at home. It’s super breezy but feels elegant and is a nice change from yoga pants. It comes in over 40 different colors/patterns and at $30 you can’t go wrong!

2. I love a candle that can double as an interesting decor piece. The sleek design of this one paired with the matte ceramic finish is modern yet down to earth.

3. This super soft and really affordable throw blanket comes in tons of lovely colors. I also love the texture of this throw - it’s incredibly soft and warm! Both are great for layering in coziness for fall.

4. These votive candles make the perfect small gifts - the concrete container is unique, and the Santal scent is universally appealing - woody and slightly floral, but not heavy. Another favorite is this candle brand, it’s so classic and timeless. Buying a set of small candles is perfect if you’re unsure which scent you’ll like best.

5. This is the loveliest smelling deodorant I’ve ever tried and when it goes on sale I stock up!

6. My fall wardrobe uniform is a chunky black sweater and jeans. Being in California, I prefer a cotton blend that won’t make me overheat and is great for the in-between weather. I’m a jeans person, through and through! This brand is one of my favorites - I love their indigo skinny jeans and their more relaxed boyfriend jeans. It might be an unpopular opinion, but I love button front jeans like this black pair - I think they look a little more vintage and cool!

What are you up to this weekend? My Mom is coming to stay with us for the weekend and I’m hoping to get time to paint with her. She is an incredible artist and I love watching her work magic with the canvas!

Today we’re throwing it back with some old school blog vibes! Do you remember when bloggers shared those what’s in my bag posts? I never actually did one, and have no idea if the topic is still of any interest, but I used to like getting a peek into what others carry in their bags, and more importantly, how they organize them. Because to me, that’s priority level two - right below don’t forget my phone. So, in an effort to do something fun and frivolous (because our ongoing world issues have been feeling very heavy), let’s dig into my bag!

KEEPING IT ORGANIZED

About four years ago I purchased a custom made insert for my bag. Originally it was meant for my Louis Vuitton Neverfull (to help protect my investment, haha!) but I found that the size fit into almost all of my other bags. There are lots of side pockets for my phone, sunglasses, keys, and random things I don’t want floating around the bottom. I bought the gray canvas color and I’m so happy I did because it hides dirt incredibly well. This organizer is a 10 out of 10 in my book!

I also carry two leather pouches for tech and cosmetic items. My favorite one was made by Baggu but unfortunately, it’s been discontinued. The smaller monogrammed one was a gift from a dear friend. She had it made in Italy! I’ve found a few similar leather pouches and linked them for you at the bottom of the post.

HEALTH & BEAUTY ITEMS

I like having a few essentials on hand and have pared things down to these:

• This mini blush/bronzer duo for a quick sweep of color on the cheeks or eyes.

• My absolute favorite face cream that’s in my bag year round. I use this metal key to squeeze out every last bit!

• A trial size toothpaste that feels fancy and disposable brushes.

• This magic spiral pin for a quick bun that stays put without damaging my hair and this hair oil for frizz control.

• A solid moisturizing balm or this essential oil formula, that I transfer into a small antique pill case.

• Allergy pills and pain reliever which come in handy when I’m on location - someone always needs one, or two. I keep them in an antique silver matchbox because pretty packaging make me happy.

• Two small vials of perfume oil - Lily of the Valley for summer and my favorite Tom Ford.

• The best chapstick and whatever lip color I’m wearing for the day.

• The blonde tortoise comb has been discontinued and I can’t seem to find anything similar.

ALL THE OTHER THINGS…

• I’m never without a notebook and pen. You never know when an idea will strike!

• The same goes for a good book. I’m currently finishing up Creative Confidence.

• A leather dog leash, because Liberty loves to run errands with me and the dog park is her reward.

• I bought two of these super affordable cotton face masks and usually have a bandana on hand.

• Sunglasses - I own 4 or 5 pair but prefer wearing these Ray Bans and these black After Hours the most.

• My French market bag has been perfect this summer - reminding me of past vacations and hopeful for future ones.

• The thin striped scarf I have tied to my bag was from a local shop (not available online) but I found this Etsy seller has some cute options, and this one too, and here’s a gray striped one that seems fairly similar. Or just tie on a bandana!

• The rest is just boring tech stuff like backup chargers and extra cords - who cares about that stuff right?

It’s officially summer and the warm weather is in full swing. Because we’re spending more time at home, the thought of having a staycation has me rethinking our outdoor spaces, and perhaps you too? FURNITURE

I really love keeping the furniture neutral to allow the surrounding greenery and accents to shine. I lean toward classic minimal lines with the largest furniture pieces and have fun experimenting with shape and pattern in my pottery and decor.

UNIQUE ACCENTS

I have a confession to make: I’m not a fan of outdoor rugs or pillows! I just find that even if they’re made for outdoor use, they still get so dirty in a short period of time, especially if exposed to the elements, and the sunshine fades colors so quickly. So instead of textile accents, I wanted to show you other ways to add in layering pieces to your outdoor space.

DINING ACCESSORIES

There are so many basic options out there when it comes to outdoor dining accessories (most of them being plastic), so instead, I wanted to share a few pieces that have a more elevated design element to them. Paying attention to the quality, style, and detail of the little things will go a long way in making your guests feel pampered.

With so many incredible resources of inspiration, advice, and expertise at our fingertips, it’s relatively easy to design a home yourself these days with a bit of scrolling and few clicks of the mouse, but where it gets tricky is creating a space that feels truly authentic to you. The furnishings and decor pieces that give a home character and soul are the ones that can’t be replicated or copied, they have to come from your personal taste and often they are collected slowly over time.

I’ve gathered some ideas to help spark the creative ways you can add character to your home. These are the five design elements I keep in mind when I’m out shopping, at the flea market, or during my travels, that help me to curate my own unique collection of furnishings and decor.

HANDMADE / ARTISAN GOODS

Call it “woo-woo” but handmade objects have a different energy than mass produced ones. There are things that machines just can’t replicate, like charming imperfections in a handmade bowl, or the nubby texture of a handwoven rug. Being around handmade things day after day feels more full and authentic than living purely with machine-made ones, because of the respect you have for the vision, meaning, and work behind them. Curating a selection of artisan goods for your home also allows the creative side of you to shine as you collect pieces that truly speak to your soul.

SOUVENIRS & MEMENTOS

Objects that remind you of past experiences are essential to creating a home with character. What could be more comforting than to walk around a home filled with pieces that recall fond memories. It could be as simple as framing a photograph captured during a favorite road trip or a small collection of vintage matchbooks you’ve gathered from antique stores or flea markets. For me, one of my most loved personal items is an abalone shell that my husband found on the ocean floor while diving, that I repurposed as a soap dish.

NATURAL ELEMENTS

The simplest way to add character to a room is through nature. Natural elements collected on walks or hikes are my first choice, but real wood furniture, jute rugs, and stoneware vases filled with branches or blooms will also lend a sense of uniqueness and warmth to a space. Bringing in elements and textures from nature doesn’t necessarily convey your personality, but it does add a layer of organic comfort that goes a long way in making a house feel like home.

FOUND VINTAGE OBJECTS

Vintage objects have a lot of the same benefits as handmade objects, but with an added element of history. Especially if your home is newly built or renovated, adding in a little bit of the past will help your home feel collected rather than contrived. Two of my favorite items to collect and add to my home are vintage rugs and vintage portraits-instant ancestors!

ARTWORK

Artwork elevates a home instantly. Art is very subjective so it can take some time to find artists whose work you really admire. Tappan Collective and Saatchi Art are great resources for finding original art, and there’s always Etsy of course. You can also find a lot of talented artists on Instagram; try searching hashtags like #doitfortheprocess and #studioscenes to see if anything catches your eye. If you’re new to art collecting or don’t want to spend a lot of money, Juniper Print Shop is a great place to start. Here are some neutral pieces I’ve curated that would work in almost any home.

Building a business over the last 20+ years, has allowed me to learn and grow from amazing opportunities, plenty of hard work, and all the mistakes and mishaps along the way - which we all know is where the real learning comes into play. I've mostly kept my head to the grindstone, working solo for years until I grew to a place where I could take on a small staff. But even with that, there were times when I felt isolated as a creative female entrepreneur - especially working in the digital space, where we tend to feel connected to others, but often times, truly aren't. 

For years I was hearing more and more about the great results other entrepreneurs had been getting by joining a mastermind group. Mostly these were really high level players with annual revenue in the tens, if not hundreds of millions, and yet, they still felt it was incredibly beneficial to belong to a group of like minded peers. As they say, iron sharpens iron.

So after much thought and exploration of other peer advisory groups, I decided to create and facilitate my own private mastermind group and invite a small group of female entrepreneurs working in a variety of creative fields to join. We’ve now been meeting once a week via Zoom and it has been as transforming as I had hoped it would be, especially in the face of how the current global pandemic is affecting our businesses. I thought I’d share with you some of the things I’ve learned from the incredible women in the group - Laurie Furber, Jeanne Oliver, Alexis Garrett, and Ginny Macdonald.

ACCOUNTABILITY IS HIGHLY MOTIVATING

Goal setting (and working towards them) is one of the ways I’ve been able to consistently grow my business. I’ve always been invigorated by a new project and a good to-do list to keep me motivated and on task. But, having a weekly meeting where you actually have to talk about your progress over the previous 7 days, puts things on a whole other level. Knowing that I’ll have to answer to the group has helped me see how before, I could easily push things off to the next week, then the next. Sharing my weekly accountability goal and progress has been an eye opener on forming better habits in this area.

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES OFFER CLARITY

With Covid-19, every member of the group has experienced challenges within their business. It’s been very affirming to have discussions about the specific issues we are facing and get insight and feedback from a variety of perspectives. Sometimes we all agree on the best course of action, and sometimes we’re split. But it gives each member the opportunity to hear several viewpoints before making their decision.

FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS ARE RESOURCEFUL

It’s been incredible to see the shifts that have been made in light of our recent events. One members forced store closure has opened up new opportunities for growth, client cancellations have spurred action by moving into other business categories, customer offerings have been restructured and some eliminated all together. And through all of these changes, we’ve been able to talk openly about our issues and struggles, share our ideas for moving forward, and gain valuable feedback and encouragement from each other.

SHARED EXPERIENCES ENCOURAGE GROWTH

The best part about talking with other business owners, is that we all have had different experiences in growing our businesses and handling issues that come our way. Someone may know how to approach email marketing, while another is great at client contracts or marketing strategies. Sharing our experiences helps each of us grow in ways we may not have thought of on our own. Learning how someone does things differently, or better even, is invaluable for a business owner.

WE CAN ALL BENEFIT FROM BEING COACHED

I’ve never had a mentor. To be honest, I didn’t know where to begin looking for one. And because of that, I didn’t know what I was missing out on! Even though I’ve been in business for decades, things are always moving - technology, marketing, company structure, and industry related specifics. Having someone to bounce ideas with, and learn from, would have saved me so much time - and money. I now realize how beneficial it has been to invest in my business through spending time with other peers, attending conferences, or by hiring a business coach. I just wish I had done it sooner!

There is something magical about original vintage artwork. They’re created from the imaginations and carefully honed skills of an artist’s hand, are completely one-of-a-kind, and have an energy and presence that no other decor object can have. Portraits have yet another layer of magic - the mystery of the model’s identity. Bringing a vintage portrait painting into your home is almost like adopting a new member of the family - an instant ancestor! They’re one of my favorite things to collect so I thought I’d share what I look for and where to find them, plus a beautiful collection of pieces that caught my eye!

WHERE TO SOURCE VINTAGE PAINTINGS

Aside from my first choice of scouring flea markets and antique malls, my favorite online sources are Etsy, Ebay, and One King’s Lane. I search “vintage portrait” and use search filters to narrow the results. It’s worth checking back every few months because you never know when that perfect piece will show up, and it can take some time to find the right piece.

MEDIUM

All of the pieces I’ve sourced below were created with oil paint on canvas or board. Generally, paintings on stretched canvas or are worth more because they are more structurally stable than paintings on wood or paper board, which can more easily be affected by moisture and humidity changes.

ARTIST’S SIGNATURE & PROVENANCE

Really expensive, high quality pieces will almost always include a signature of the artist on the front, as well as paperwork that details its provenance, or the trail of ownership since its creation. Not all paintings will have this, however, but plenty of incredible artwork is anonymous! In fact, it can add a layer of mystery to the painting, making it more intriguing!

WHEN TO INVEST

Everybody’s budget and resources are different, so after taking into account what you can realistically afford, I find the best measure to be my intuition! If you absolutely love the artwork, if you can’t stop looking at it, if it speaks to you in some way, then I would consider it worth investing in. Fine art, in general, is considered a long term investment, so I prefer to buy paintings I know I will love for a lifetime. That includes pieces I bought for a song and the ones with a higher price point.

Below, I’ve sourced a collection of beautiful vintage portraits. They range in size, age, and price. Some would be considered investment pieces while others are more affordable works. I tried my best to find a balance of subjects including men, women, different ethnicities, and people of color, who tend to be vastly under represented in art history.

One of my favorite items to source for my own home as well as for photo shoots are vintage rugs. They instantly add so much character, depth, and texture to a space - and give a home that well traveled look! It can be tricky to find good vintage rugs, and even harder to find ones that don’t cost a fortune. But I have a few tricks that will help you source them and handpicked a gorgeous selection of 15 neutral vintage runners - most of them under $200 with free shipping!

How to Source Vintage RuGs

There are so many great rug sellers online - particularly those based in Turkey or Morocco, where rug-making traditions go back thousands of years. If you’re looking to find the most affordable, direct to consumer prices, my favorite source is Etsy, and the best tool at your disposal are their search filters! My first step is to enter '“vintage Turkish (or Kilim, or Oushak) rug” into the search bar. Then I narrow it down into the right categories: Home & Living > Floors & Rugs > Rugs > then scroll down to Rug Type (rectangle, runner, area, etc.) and select from there.

Next, I select keywords to narrow my search: antique or vintage, free shipping, price range, material (wool is my choice), style (Turkish, Anatolian, Oushak) and several color choices - beige, brown - I like black too! I don’t enter dimensions since many are measured in metric anyway. I add the rugs that catch my eye to my Favorites, then go back to narrow down my choices and check sizing last. 15 NEUTRAL VINTAGE RUNNERS

Below I’ve chosen a gorgeous selection of neutral rugs. I find their color doesn’t overwhelm or dominate a space, and will compliment most interiors. The rugs are arranged by design style, starting with Kilim rugs that feature distinct medallions and motifs down the middle, then rugs that have more of an overall pattern, and at the end, Moroccan rugs that have a more simple or monochromatic design. Most have been professionally cleaned, and from my own experience purchasing from these sellers, arrive from overseas in a about a week!

I know that styling can sometimes feel intimidating - especially when you’re faced with an empty shelf, table, or corner, and a house full of collected objects to select from, how do you know where to begin? In this post, I want to share with you how to throw together a quick vignette with just three objects. It’s an easy win that I like to think of as the stylist’s hat-trick!

Let’s break it down. The three items you’ll need are: something tall, something wide, and something small. Bonus points if you can include something organic, something geometric, and something practical in a single vignette!

Before we dive in, let’s talk about vignettes; what are they? A vignette has a few definitions, but in interior styling, it is a collection of a few objects that can stand alone as a unit. It tells a small part of the story, representing the rest of the room on a smaller scale. Now, let’s dive in to some examples!

on The Kitchen Table

Aside from being super charming, the image below also makes use of the “three-item trick” very clearly. The pitcher of greenery adds height and organic texture, while the bowl of fruit provides a pop of color and a nice wide shape. The smaller ceramic vase acts as a punctuation mark to tie the larger objects together - think of it as a comma in a sentence. There’s definitely a focus on pretty decor but a practical element comes in with the fruit. I also love how the three-item theme is echoed in the fruit itself.

The vignette blow is very similar to the one above, just with slightly different objects! You don’t always need something wide and low like a bowl - what’s important is that the three objects have different enough shapes to stand out from one another. The way the wild greenery weaves through the composition is my favorite part of this scene, and it adds another layer of meaning to the term “vignette,” which has a root word meaning “little vine.”

What makes this vignette slightly unique is that the sconce acts as a third styling object. The books ground the composition with a flat, linear element, the floral arrangement adds a much needed pop of organic energy to an otherwise quite sleek space, and the sconce ties it all together. A similar effect could be achieved on your own nightstand with a table lamp if you prefer. What’s great about this scene is it’s mix of styles and textures - it’s modern yet traditional, with a nice combination of geometric shapes and organic textures.

IN THE Kitchen

You can’t go wrong with this combination: vase + books + bowl. Add some seasonal produce, an artwork or two and you’re done! To keep it even more practical, use your most-loved cookbooks as styling props in the kitchen so you can easily access them anytime. I like how the fruit bowl is actually a ceramic colander - it adds a little more texture and visual interest.

Greenery in a vase isn’t the only way to add height to a composition, especially in a kitchen. Try a crock filled with cooking utensils or cookbooks stacked vertically. Everything pictured in this vignette is practical as well as beautiful.

In the Living Area

For those areas that aren’t frequently used every single day, like display cabinets, credenzas, or bookshelves, you can feel free to be a lot more decorative and less concerned with practicality. I love the stark sculptural branches in the image below - they provide an organic element but remain minimalist to compliment the rest of the scene. The use of rounded decor pieces (vase and bowl) contrast nicely with the geometric edges of the cabinet and frame.

I hope this gives you a little more confidence when styling spaces in your own home! The great thing about the three item “hat trick” is that achieving it can be done with items you currently have in your own home. Once you grasp the concepts, take a walk through your spaces to see what you can use to style your own beautiful vignettes!

Like you, I’ve been spending a lot more time in the kitchen lately. If I’m being completely honest, I’m sort of over it. There have been some hits and misses, and days where I have no idea what to make, nor care. How about you? I know that we’re all trying to make the best of things and keep busy, and during one of my many cooking/cleaning sprees, I had an idea to take note of my favorite kitchen items to share with you here. Over the years, these are the items that I love and use the most, and that make time spent in the kitchen easier, more enjoyable, and more efficient! Now, more than ever.

BASKETS & BAGS

Market Basket - Without a doubt, the most stylish way to shop for groceries! It also makes a great weekend bag.

Fair Trade African Basket - I use this for weekly trips to my local farmstand - it’s the perfect size for this.

Cotton Mesh Shopping Bags - I carry one of these in my handbag so I’m never caught without. I also love them in black and sometimes use these to “wrap” gifts or deliver freshly picked oranges.

Reusable Produce Bags - For larger grocery runs, I bring these for produce and occasionally store vegetables in them.

TOWELS & NAPKINS

Gauzy Cotton Napkins - These affordable cotton napkins are so pretty piled in a bowl on the kitchen table.

White Linen Napkins - Classic white napkins are a staple and much more beautiful and environmentally friendly than paper.

Linen Kitchen Towel - I bought towels similar to these in France (as gifts for those attending The Academy) and was happy to find a very close option here in the states. I love a dark towel, it’s so good at hiding stains!

Flax Cocktail Napkins - I like placing these between a cup and saucer when serving tea or coffee - or cocktails, of course!

Striped Linen Napkins - For dressing up a table, a patterned or striped napkin is always great to have on hand.

STORAGE JARS

Large Pantry Jars - I use these jars to organize bulk items in our pantry. The wide opening makes it very easy to scoop out exactly what I need when cooking. Here’s a post about our pantry, if you’d like to see more.

Weck Jars - I use weck jars to store olives, spices, pickles, and homemade salad dressings. These are also my favorite jars when I’m gifting something homemade from the kitchen.

Le Parfait 32 oz - This is a nice size for bulk nuts - we keep a large variety on hand at all times. My husband is a squirrel.

Le Parfait 48 oz - I like these for storing fresh squeezed orange juice in the refrigerator, or bulk pantry items.

COOKING & BAKING

End Grain Cutting Boards - We use several types of these for our everyday chopping and slicing. They’re beautiful left out on the counter and easy to clean with heavy dose of kosher salt and a lemon sliced in half and used as a scrubber.

Matte Black French Oven - I love the sleek lines and matte finish of this cast iron cocotte. Another favorite that often sits out on the stove, is this Emille Henry ceramic casserole I purchased in France last year.

Cast Iron Skillet - The 15 inch size is perfect for so many dishes. I love being able to put this directly into the oven and the quality of caramelization is unmatched when compared with any other type of pan.

Parchment Paper - I buy these unbleached sheets of parchment paper in bulk. They make cleanup so easy when cooking, but they also make for pretty liners on appetizer and cheese platters. In a pinch, you can even use it as wrapping paper!

Silicone Baking Mat - Nothing sticks to this silicone mat and it makes cleanup a breeze!

COFFEE ACCESSORIES

Electric Kettle - Finally, an electric kettle that actually looks good on the kitchen counter! The gooseneck spout creates a precise water flow for making pour over or french press coffee.

French Press - To me, this classic chambord style is the best French press.

Milk Frother - I love when French cafes bring you hot milk for your coffee, this frother will do just that and more - like help you make beautiful latte art, or at least practice it! I’ve also heard from others that it makes great hot chocolate.

Cups & Saucers - The perfect size for making cappuccinos or dirty chai lattes.

Duralex Cups - A great size for serving shots of espresso, with a little extra room for a dash of milk on top if you prefer.

COFFEE MACHINES

Breville Espresso Machine - This was our first espresso machine and although we don’t use it on a daily basis any longer, it does come in handy during parties for pulling shots or steaming hot milk.

Nespresso Citiz Machine - I have this Nespresso in the studio and always tell my husband that the day it breaks down is the day I go buy another one. I like it that much!

De’Longhi Espresso Machine - On the daily, this machine gets quite the workout! I tell friends that this machine has made us supremely lazy - with the push of a single button it will make just about any style coffee. There’s no going back.

MISCELLANEOUS

Pantry Appetizer Plates - I own three sets of these appetizer plates and use them for almost all my breakfasts and lunches. Their sturdy weight reminds me of French cafe plates and they stand up well under the wear and tear of daily use.

Orange Juicer - This was the first thing we bought after we purchased our grove property. After years of use, I can definitely say, it squeezes every last drop of juice from our oranges and still looks and works great. Highly recommend!

Recycled Glass Tumblers - I bought these probably ten years ago and still love them. They have changed the design slightly but I think they’re still just as beautiful for serving special drinks.

Beeswax Wraps - Not only for cheese, I also like use this to beeswax wrap over bowls and plates for leftovers.

White Tea Scented Liquid Soap - The scent is unexpected, subtle and lovely, and it looks great on a kitchen counter.

Stainless Steel Water Dispenser - This stylish dispenser is perfect to use at parties and outdoor get-togethers.

Welcome back to another installment in our series Styling Essentials, where we talk about the decor items I source most often for photoshoots to help make a space feel layered and beautifully styled. These styling essentials are the pieces I find many homeowners often don’t have enough of - or at all. In today’s lesson, we’ll discuss a fundamental building block when it comes to styling a kitchen or dining space; whiteware. There is something so classic, clean and uncomplicated about styling an all white display, but whiteware also helps to balance more colorful or patterned collections. There are a few elements I keep in mind when styling whiteware: Sculpture & Scale, Visual Height, and Form & Function. Now let’s dive in!

SCULPTURE & SCALE

When assembling your display with whiteware, you’ll want to be sure to include larger scale pieces and items with a unique or bold shape. These types of strong, eye-catching pieces can stand alone and will easily and quickly fill up space in your cabinet or shelves. Using larger scale pieces will help prevent common mistakes I see often which are; too many small items, or ones that very similar or the exact same size. Incorporating sculpture and scale in your styling, also gives you the ability to create dimension and a composition that is difficult to achieve using an array of like items.

VISUAL HEIGHT

When styling a shelf or display you want to think about filling in vertical space as well as horizontal. You want objects with a variety of different heights so that the collection as a whole looks dynamic and layered rather than one note or flat. Here are three ways you can accomplish that with ease!

FORM & FUNCTION

I always suggest keeping practical, commonly used items within arms reach. By keeping everyday dishes or most used items on the lower shelves your styling will feel more authentic to how you use the and function within the space. Here are examples of utilitarian whiteware items that are best kept handy!

My weekend was spent trying to avoid the news with the same distractions I’m sure you’ve been practicing - reading, watching movies, and cleaning. Why does that last one feel so therapeutic? Is it because our minds are preoccupied with all the scrubbing and washing or that we leave the tasks with a sense of accomplishment? Because let’s face it, that feeling is rather hard to come by right now. So in an effort to feel more normal, I dove in headfirst into tidying up. Here are the things that made me feel better - and might do the same for you?

• Opened up the windows and let in the fresh air! Awwww…slow, deep breaths.

• Washed and bleached our white linen sheets. Nothing beats freshly laundered sheets at bedtime.

• Swept the porches and patios. Watered plants. Pulled a few weeds. Cut flowers and branches to bring indoors.

• Cleaned out the refrigerator. Menu planned and meal prepped using the items I have on hand.

• Wiped down all the kitchen counters and cabinets, then swept and mopped the floor.

By Sunday afternoon, I felt a sense of calm and order, at least in what I could control - my environment and my thoughts. And I was able to spend time getting lost sourcing pretty homekeeping things and putting this post together for you.

Hey there. How are you doing? I’ve been thinking of you and wondering how you and others are handling our recent events and navigating this temporary way of life. It feels surreal. I hope that you and your loved ones are well. We’ve been spending our days at home reading, nesting, cooking together. I picked up my camera to document a few things that have brought joy and comfort during this time of social distancing. It comes as no surprise that it’s the simple things that mean the most.

As a lifelong candle lover, I know that the scent of a room can instantly lift a mood or transport you to a time and place that makes you feel nostalgic. But I was unaware how diffusing oils could make a room smell so intensely fragrant! When I was in France last spring, I purchased 5 or 6 organic oils, unsure of what I was going to do with them. Then at the end of summer, I bought this inexpensive diffuser for my studio and have continued to use it nearly every day! I’ve tried a few combinations of herbal scents but my absolute favorite oil makes my studio smell like a fancy hotel. I hope they never stop selling it.

Our orange grove is overflowing with fruit ready for harvest and many of the trees are in early bloom. This is the best time of year to be at home. We’ve donated boxes and boxes to friends, family, and local restaurants and churches to try and do what we can for our community with all the abundance. I would love to send a fresh box to 3 of you. The bees are hard at work and a pair of hummingbirds have built a tiny nest outside my studio doors. I sneak out several times a day to see what they’re up to. Two pale blue eggs hatched this week and both babies seem to be doing well. The mother darts about my head when I go out to take pictures making it known that I’m not welcome. I’ll miss them when they’re gone. They’ve put on quite a show.

And as soon as the days start getting longer (and sunnier) our hens begin laying again. We are down to only two chickens right now because the Newcastle disease has prohibited the buying or selling of live poultry in our county since May of last year. I hope it ends soon and we can add to more girls to our flock. Until then, Soufflé and Gray Girl are living in lavish luxury in our big coop. I’ve been spoiling them rotten feeding them sunflower seeds and fresh organic greens, and letting them run around wherever they please. When I open a back door they come running to me in their funny chicken waddle way and I still find it comical to watch after all these years.

I want to talk with you about something that's been on my mind for a while: the difference between inspiration and imitation. I feel that over the last few years, the prevalence of Instagram and Pinterest “inspiration” has altered our idea of what it means to actually be inspired. As a location scout for Country Living and many other magazines, I've seen homes become more and more identical online, lacking individuality and becoming carbon copies of what's trending. And, although it may seem easier to copy exactly what you see online, the results will inevitably lack depth and personality.

Today, I want to show you how you can use inspiration images as a springboard rather than a blueprint. Instead of sourcing identical items, we will focus on things like: quality of light, texture, color hues, the sense of history or place, mood, and experience. This is how the world's best artists and creative directors approach inspiration, they use the world around them as a living mood board of elements to pull bits and pieces from. They use inspiration to innovate, not replicate.

Last year I spent a solo month in France and rented this gorgeous greenhouse apartment. The location was very inspiring and I thought some of the photos I took there would make for a great discussion on the topic. I want to walk you through the process of how you can be inspired by this particular space as opposed to duplicating it exactly.

In this image, I am most inspired by the wabi-sabi nature of the space. I love how the room feels randomly tossed together, but all the elements work collectively to create a rather beautiful mess. Nothing is too perfect, shown in the wrinkled fabrics, aged plaster and terra cotta finishes. The abundance of soft natural light and greenery make it feel very fresh and seasonally, it feels like Spring. It’s the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor and I can easily imagine hiding away there with a good book and a cup of coffee while morning light streams in through the windows. Let’s see how might we reinterpret this inspiration:

The element I’m really drawn to here is the accent chair. This could easily be re-interpreted for its pattern, color, or velvety fabric texture. I also love that the chair in combination with the little marble sculpture give this image a very European feel.

What I love most about this image is the mix of aged texture combined with a sense of minimalism. I also love the fresh color palette of off-white, taupe, and green. This could be reinterpreted through the textures, colors, raw wood tones, or by incorporating colored or handmade glassware.

I hope this encourages you to begin thinking about exactly what it is that captures your attention when looking at inspiration photos. Instead of approaching it as a means to duplicate the space literally, take time to reflect on the individual elements that attract you. Is it the mood, the color palette, the patina or sense of age within the space - focus on those things and spend time considering how you can reinterpret those aspects in order to create your own authentic style!
