The builders of a massive dome over the stricken Chernobyl nuclear reactor in Ukraine say they have closed a 30-year-old nuclear wound.

The plant was at the centre of the world's worst-ever nuclear accident in 1986.

But Ukraine's government has now promised that a newly constructed $2 billion shelter will provide radiation safety for the next century.

It has been hailed as an engineering masterpiece, as the biggest moving construction ever created, and the crowd at the official Chernobyl ceremony was appreciative.
