The federal government has moved to assure people their personal data, entered in tonight's (Tues 9/8) census, will be secure. Independent senator Nick Xenophon and Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young have added their voices to those raising privacy concerns.

South Australian senator Nick Xenophon says he will be taking a stand when he fills out his census details - vowing to withhold his name, and risk a penalty of $180-a-day.

He's one of a number of people who have expressed concerns over the way census data is being collected and kept. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) plans to retain data for up to four years to enable more rigorous studies of social trends.

Filling in names and addresses is compulsory when completing the census.

Small Business Minister Michael McCormack insists people's personal data will be secure.
