Another Friday brought another national cabinet meeting all States, except Western Australia have endorsed the idea of defining coronavirus hotspot.

The proposed definition was that the starting point for a hotspot be 10 locally-acquired cases a day over three consecutive days in metropolitan areas, and three locally-acquired cases daily over the same period in regional Australia.

States and territories - again, with W-A the sole dissenter - agreed to aim to lift their hard border closures by Christmas.

There was some unity on the matter of allowing more Australians to come back home.

Presently, around 4,000 Australians per week are permitted to return home.

Federal Transport Minister Michael McCormack will work with the state governments to see if flights currently set for Sydney can be sent to other cities.

Tasmania says it is willing to allow some international flights to land in order to help.

It is thought about 23,000 Australians overseas are trying to return home, with around one-third of those from India.

All eyes now turn to Victoria, awaiting Sunday's revelation of the state's path out of coronavirus restrictions.

Victoria has now has 661 coronavirus deaths.

The national COVID-19 death toll is now 748.
