Will There Be A Samsung Galaxy Note 22?

After the Samsung Galaxy S21 series hit the shelves at the end of January 2021, consumers had waited patiently for the release of the Galaxy Note 21. The Galaxy Note 21 was set to be the next release and typically would improve on the Galaxy S range of devices, focusing on enhancing particular aspects of the device such as the camera and overall build design. 

Samsung didn’t follow their usual release patterns in 2021, however. Instead, the Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 were launched in place of the Note. These devices included support for the S Pen, just like the Galaxy S21 Ultra. This has led to many tech consumers becoming increasingly uncertain about the future of the Galaxy Note Series. Will it continue at all? 

After more than a decade of Note production, Samsung has finally laid the rumors to rest and announced that their beloved Galaxy Note series is officially being discontinued. The brand will continue to exist, however, as it will be used as a transitional marketing tool. The Samsung S22 Ultra seems to be stepping in to fill the shoes of the Note offering virtually the same Note experience, just without the name that has come to define Galaxy phones that boast Samsung S Pen compatibility. 

Over the last number of generations, Samsung continued to blur the lines between the Note and the Galaxy S range which continued to grow in size. Last year, compatibility for the S Pen and the Ultra model was introduced, effectively launching the next evolution of the Note experience. Let’s take a look at how else the Note is being phased out and replaced with the new Ultra range.

Similar Look And Feel

Samsung has essentially brought the Note back but positioned it at the higher end of the S range, calling it the S22 Ultra. From its S Pen compatibility down to its rounded edges, the S22 Ultra just looks and feels like a Note. Samsung has not only made the S22 Ultra S Pen compatible but they have made it embedded, adding a small slot at the bottom of the frame where the S Pen can neatly be hidden from sight when it’s not in use. 

It would seem that Samsung has essentially allowed the Galaxy S Line to absorb the Note brand for good. This is most likely to differentiate between the smartphone manufacturer’s foldable phones and the non-foldable phones of the Galaxy S series.

The Impact Of The Stylus

With their plans for the S Series to absorb the Note brand, however, Samsung was able to find a way to differentiate the Ultra from others in the range and offer a unique selling point. The inclusion of the stylus or S Pen in the new S22 Ultra is key in differentiating this model from others in Samsung’s range.

Adding S Pen compatibility and including the slot to hide the pen was key in maintaining a notable distinction between the S22 Ultra and other S22 devices in the range. The Note line is incredibly effective in helping the stylus to regain its popularity since the rise of the smartphone and Samsung have ensured that this functionality will still be available to users moving forward. 

Price And Specs

The S22 Ultra will retail at AUD $1,849 or $1,199 USD, landing somewhere between the value of the Note 20 and the Note 20 Ultra. Equipped with a 6.8 inch display featuring QHD+ and a 120Hz refresh rate, the quality of the phone’s screen is simply amazing. The S22 Ultra will also feature a 5,000mAh battery, providing you with plenty of power and is paired with 8GB of RAM and a choice of 128 or 256GB worth of internal storage. 

Loaded with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, a pair of 10-megapixel telephoto lenses and a wide-angle at 108-megapixels, the rear camera system is also more than adequate, to say the very least. The camera is also capable of shooting 8K video at 24 frames a second or it can be used to shoot 4K at 60 frames per second. What’s more, the camera system is also designed to deliver better low-light shots and video and allows for more depth of field in portrait mode. 

Finally, the S22 Ultra features Gorilla Glass Invictus to bolster its protection and is paired with a robust Armour Aluminum frame. This is a seriously heavy duty smartphone.

The Note Might Be Dead But The Experience Lives On

If you are a fan of the Note and are sad to see this popular range fade from existence, don’t panic. With the new Samsung S22 Ultra, you can still enjoy virtually all of the same features as you could on the Note 20 and its predecessors. The S Pen compatibility and the ability to conceal the pen on the S22 Ultra, has essentially  turned the S22 Ultra into the newest iteration of the Galaxy Note.
