Twin Cities activist, civil rights attorney, and professor Nekima Levy Armstrong has been doing justice-based work for years.

Levy Armstrong helped organize the earliest protests last year after the murder of George Floyd by ex-police officer Derek Chauvin.

Brightbeam CEO and Minnesota resident Chris Stewart notes, “Levy Armstrong is responsible for a great deal of what you see on TV about the organizing and the activating and mobilizing of community whenever there’s an injustice here in the Twin Cities. So you probably know about George Floyd, and Daunte [Wright], and Philando Castile and others, largely in part to work that Nekima has done.”

Just hours after the Derek Chauvin verdict was announced, Oprah had Levy Armstrong on “Oprah Daily” to discuss where we go from here.

Upon hearing the verdict announced, Levy Armstrong describes how she felt:

While listening to the judge say the words “guilty, guilty, guilty,” Armstrong said that tears rolled down her face. “I thought, ‘I can breathe for the first time in a year,'” she told Oprah.

For Armstrong, the moment represents the culmination of a yearlong fight for justice—one that, at some points, seemed “impossible.”
