Her son, King Charles, stood shoulder to shoulder with his grieving relatives during the hour-long goodbye.

And the world watched as the woman, who was never meant to be sovereign but dedicated her life to her service, was given a historic send-off.

It came to a poignant finish as the her casket was lowered to lie beside her "strength and stay", the Duke of Edinburgh, who died last year aged 99.

It comes as...

Some 800 mourners filed into the gothic chapel - where the Queen stood little more than a year ago to bury her husband.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry took their seats beside Prince William and Princess Kate, as well as their children George, nine, and seven-year-old Charlotte.

The service was conducted by the Dean of Windsor, with prayers said by the Rector of Sandringham, the Minister of Crathie Kirk and the Chaplain of Windsor Great Park.

Following the penultimate hymn, the imperial State Crown, Orb and Sceptre were moved from the Queen's coffin to the altar.

The King then draped the Queen's Company Camp Colour of the Grenadier Guards on the coffin before the Lord Chamberlain broke his Wand of Office, marking the end of his service to the sovereign.

The Dean said a psalm and the Commendation while the casket disappeared from public view for the last time.

A lament was played by the Sovereign's Piper and the Archbishop of Canterbury pronounced the blessing, before the congregation sang the national anthem.

It brought the long day of mourning, which began at Westminster Hall, to a touching close.

The Queen's coffin arrived at the Castle after being taken in a hearse scattered with flowers thrown by her beloved subjects on a final procession.

Bouquets tossed by well-wishers along the route remained on its bonnet and roof after it slowly inched down The Long Walk.

Silence fell among huge crowds of mourners that had gathered for the once-in-a-lifetime occasion as the drummers, members of the armed forces and hearse passed.

Children were lifted on their parents' shoulders and phones were raised in the air as people struggled to catch a glimpse of the sombre scene.

The Queen's family walked behind her coffin throughout the day and the emotion was clear to see on their faces.

The King looked close to tears during the earlier Westminster Abbey state funeral service, while other royals also appeared to be deeply moved.

Thousands of mourners packed pavements across the capital and through Berkshire as Her Majesty was driven first to Westminster Abbey and then to Windsor.

Charles gave a sombre salute as his mother's coffin left Wellington Arch, joined by siblings AndrewEdward and Anne, and sons William and Harry, who appeared solemn in reflection.

The bearer party lifted the Queen’s coffin from the State Gun Carriage into the glass-backed State Hearse, which Her Majesty helped design.

Bands of the Scots and Grenadier Guards then played a medley of her favourites, including Jerusalem and I Vow To Thee My Country.

As the hearse left the monument for Windsor, the parade gave a Royal Salute, and God Save The King played out.
