Trump calls Special Counsel a 'hit man for Obama' and 'fully-weaponized monster' in rant claiming his family compared his election win to 9/11 and asking if the FBI will ever 'invade' Bill and Hillary Clinton's home

  • Trump called him a 'fully weaponized monster'
  • He also said he 'did nothing wrong on January 6th'

  • Trump complained about the search
  • 'When will you invade Bill and Hillary’s home in search of the 33,000 emails?'
  • Comes after conservative allies tried to paint Smith as partisan

Former President Donald Trump on Monday unloaded on special counsel Jack Smith, who has taken over oversight of the Mar-a-Lago probe and the Justice Department's investigation of the 2020 election overturn effort.

Trump's attacks came after Smith Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith, a career prosecutor, in an effort to provide a measure of insulation amid government probes of the announced 2024 presidential candidate.

Smith gave a flash of his dogged reputation with a Thanksgiving Day filing that took on a Trump argument in the seized documents case.

'This fully weaponized monster, Jack Smith, shouldn’t be let anywhere near the political persecution of “President Donald J. Trump,” wrote former President Trump on his Truth Social platform.

'I did nothing wrong on January 6th, and nothing wrong with the Democrats’ fix on the Document Hoax, that is, unless the six previous Presidents did something wrong also,' Trump wrote in a trio of posts that railed against Smith and the FBI as well as Smith family members.

Trump was ripping a page from his 2017 playbook, when he and his allies repeatedly sought to scorch former FBI Director Robert Mueller after his first AG, Jeff Sessions, named Mueller special counsel to head up the Russia probe. Mueller ended up hiring a team of prosecutors and produced a lengthy report that listed 10 potential instances of obstruction of justice but failed to conclude Trump's campaign colluded with the Russians.

Trump then brought back one of his favorite 2016 campaign issues – Hillary Clinton's deleted emails, which featured in a DOJ probe of the former secretary of state and Democratic presidential nominee. In that probe, former FBI Director James Comey ultimately announced during the campaign that the FBI recommended no criminal charges be brought but chided Clinton for being 'extremely careless' with her emails.

'When will you invade Bill and Hillary’s home in search of the 33,000 emails she deleted AFTER receiving a subpoena from the U.S. Congress? When will you invade the other Presidents’ homes in search of documents, which are voluminous, which they took with them, but not nearly so openly and transparently as I did?' asked Trump.

That comparison came after a Republican appointee on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals chided one of Trump's lawyers for calling the FBI's search of Mar-a-Lago for government documents a 'raid.'

'Do you think a raid is the right term for the execution of a warrant?' Trump appointee Britt Grant asked of the court-authorized search. Trusty apologized for using a 'loaded term.'

Trump's rant against the special counsel came days after some of his allies began the effort to paint Smith as a partisan. Trump loyalist Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) told former Trump chief White House strategist Steve Bannon Smith's family tree was full of 'virulent Trump haters' because his wife was a producer on Michelle Obama's documentary.

Republicans have also pointed to Smith's role prosecuting Virginia Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell on corruption charges, which resulted in a conviction. The Supreme Court unanimously overturned the case in 2016 and sent the case to a lower court.

Trump also linked to an article associating Smith with IRS targeting of conservative groups and other entities.

Trump also retweeted a post that went after another Smith family member, this time his sister-in-law, for writing she had a feeling of 'dread' after Trump's election that she compared to Sept. 11th. Trump claimed Smith was under 'tremendous pressure' from his family.

'And I’m supposed to get a fair shake from this person, who’s under tremendous pressure from his family, but he is actually worse than they are? Can Republicans, and fair-minded people, generally, allow this to happen? Jack Smith is nothing less than a hit man for Obama, his Attorney General Eric Holder, and Andrew Weissmann. Weaponization. Our Country is in big trouble, a real mess!' he concluded.

Weissmann is the top prosecutor recruited by Mueller to join his team.
