A bizarre and bloody chicken sacrifice in the Mexican Senate has landed a politician in hot water.

Adolfo Gómez Hernández, a legislator from the Morena parliamentary group, invited dancers with incense burners and two more people who sacrificed the animal into the government building on Wednesday (April 24). The first person held the bird while a woman cut its neck with a knife, catching its blood in a container.

Fellow lawmakers said they tried to block the animals from getting into the Senate. However a determined Hernández made sure the unusual ritual happened in the building.

Ana Lilia Rivera Rivera, president of the Senate Board of Directors, said in a statement: "These events were carried out under the strict individual responsibility of Senator Adolfo Gómez Hernández, who justified the action under the protection of the uses and customs of an indigenous group or community to which he expressed his self-assignment.

"The Presidency of the Board of Directors had previously communicated to the aforementioned senator the express refusal to authorise the entry of any type of animal into the building, in accordance with the current security and civil protection protocols."

She also said "the pertinent disciplinary measures will be taken with the responsible senator."

Hernández, from Oaxaca, justified his decision to sacrifice the bird by arguing the country's constitution indicated the practices of the native peoples should be respected. However, some people on social media slammed the politician and reckoned the move was a stunt.

One wrote: "Out with politicians who enjoy animal abuse." Another added: "This Type of barbarism against a Living Being in the 21st century is unacceptable."

A third added: "They believe that because they are in power they can do whatever they want, well no, that they remove his seat, that he be prosecuted for animal abuse and receive his punishment like any citizen."
