  • Details about Brittney's experience in prison

In her interview with Good Morning America's Robin Roberts on 20/20, Brittney Griner detailed her traumatic prison experience.

“The mattress had a huge blood stain on it, and they give you these thin two sheets, so you're basically laying on bars,” she said.

“From the middle of my shin to my feet stuck through the bars, which, in prison, you really don’t want to stick your leg and arm through bars…[because] someone could go up and grab it, break it, twist it. And that’s what was going through my mind.”

To this, she added that she would go without toilet paper for a while and would be forced to use toothpaste that expired "like 15 years ago."

“We used to put it on the black mold to kill the mold on the walls,” she said.

“They made me write this letter. It was in Russian,” she said.

“I had to ask for forgiveness and thanks from their so-called great leader. I didn’t want to do it, but at the same time I wanted to come home.”

  • 'Maybe they will bring him next'

Boarding the plane for the trade, Brittney said in her interview on ABC's 20/20 that she felt disappointed that Paul Whelan, another American held in Russia, wasn't accompanying her.

Raised by their parents Sandra and Raymond, the four children grew up in different areas of Texas, including Dayton, Humble, and Harris.

Reflecting on her journey, she shared with Aljazeera America in 2014, "I did hit rock bottom at one point."

Despite being a self-described "daddy's girl," Griner only came out to her mother during her freshman year of high school, keeping her sexual identity concealed from her father until her senior year.

Upon learning the truth, her father disowned her, leading to her expulsion from their family home.

The agreement between the US and Russia leaves Paul Whelan, an American corporate security executive and former Marine, detained in Russia under what American officials have labeled as fraudulent charges.

"BG and I will remain committed to the work of getting every American home, including Paul," Charelle added.

"We do understand there are still people out there who are enduring what I endured the last nine months."

Cherelle had previously voiced her worry for her wife, noting that Brittney was grappling with difficulties as she awaited her release.

"I don't know if she has anything left in her tank to continue to wake up every day and be in a place where she has no one," Cherelle said.

  • 'It feels to me as if she's a hostage'

Cherelle had previously participated in an interview with CBS, sitting down with Gayle King to discuss her wife's hostage situation at that time.

On July 6, 2022, Biden conversed with Cherelle during a call, assuring her of his commitment to endeavor for the release of her spouse.

The White House said in a statement: "The President called Cherelle to reassure her that he is working to secure Brittney's release as soon as possible, as well as the release of Paul Whelan and other U.S. nationals who are wrongfully detained or held hostage in Russia and around the world."

Officials announced that on December 8, 2022, the basketball star was freed from detention in exchange for international arms dealer Viktor Bout in a one-for-one prisoner swap.

According to a Reuters report on July 7, Brittney admitted guilt to the drug-related charge, asserting that her actions were unintentional and a violation of the law.
