A San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver who was shot in the chest in the city on Saturday was released from the hospital a day later after his condition had previously been reported to have been “serious but stable.”
Ricky Pearsall, 23, was signing fan autographs Saturday afternoon in San Francisco. Shortly after, a teen whose identity has not been released allegedly shot the former University of Florida Gator in the chest. ESPN reported:
The suspect, a 17-year old male from Tracy, California, was arrested Saturday, according to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott. Pearsall was walking alone shortly after 3:30 p.m. Saturday when a suspect attempted to rob him with a gun on Geary Boulevard in the Union Square area. According to the San Francisco Fire Department, a 911 call at 3:38 p.m. PT reported shots fired at the corner of Geary and Grant streets, a block away from San Francisco’s Union Square. Police arrived shortly after.
The team confirmed the shooting and attempted robbery in a Saturday night statement.
“San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was the victim of an attempted robbery and shooting this afternoon,” the 49ers said. “He sustained a bullet wound to his chest and is in serious but stable condition. We ask that you please respect his privacy at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family.”
Less than 24 hours later, Pearsall was released from the hospital, the team announced on X (formerly Twitter).

Pearsall’s mother said her son was shot in the chest and that the bullet exited through his back without striking any vital organs. As ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted, Pearsall walked to an ambulance on his own after the shooting.

It is unclear when or if Pearsall will take the field this year. The 49ers will kick off the 2024 regular season at home on Sept. 9 against the New York Jets.
The former college standout recorded 2,420 receiving yards in five seasons – three with Arizona State and two with Florida. He was selected in the first round of this year’s NFL draft.
