Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) is being called out for his stunning comments on CNN Sunday defending his baseless claims that Haitian migrants in Springfield, OH have been eating household pets.

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, the Ohio senator claimed the pet eating stories he has been pushing are “verifiable” — but also said this:

“The American media totally ignored this stuff until Donald Trump and I started talking about cat memes. If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m going to do, Dana, because you guys are completely letting Kamala Harris coast.”

He added, “I say that we’re creating a story, meaning we’re creating the American media focusing on it.”

The comments absolutely stunned politicians, journalists, and other observers:

UPDATE 5:17 p.m. ET: Senator Vance tweeted the following in response to the backlash over his interview:

“A dishonest smear. I didn’t invent constituents complaining about this. We did help create the media focus on their complaints.”

In addition, a campaign spokesperson for JD Vance issued a statement to Mediaite claiming the senator’s words were twisted.

“Instead of dishonestly twisting Senator Vance’s words, our regime media should be making Kamala Harris answer for her weak, failed and dangerously liberal agenda as Border Czar, which has resulted in skyrocketing inflation and soaring crime rates,” said campaign spokesperson Taylor Van Kirk.
