The attorney for the suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter Luigi Mangione told reporters following a hearing in Pennsylvania on Tuesday that he anticipates his client will be pleading not guilty to the murder charges brought against him in New York City.

Defense attorney Tom Dickey said that he has been retained to represent Mangione for the proceedings in Pennsylvania and added that it's “a possibility” he will represent him for the case in New York. Dickey said that his client will be pleading not guilty to the illegal firearm and forgery charges in Pennsylvania as well.

"We’ve pled not guilty, at least to the charges in Pennsylvania. Like I said I’m not aware of any actual charges in New York," said Dickey. "I’m telling you as his lawyer, he didn’t have any representation until I got involved this afternoon. And I’m telling you he’s pleading not guilty."

Dickey also said that he believes that Mangione should have been granted bail at Tuesday's hearing and questions whether the second-degree murder charge filed in New York might be eligible for bail under Pennsylvania law. (

Dickey added that he "hasn't seen any evidence [Mangione] is the shooter," adding: "I have not seen one scintilla, one speck, one drop of any evidence yet. So, it's what I decided, I think, was in our best interest to do today."

Following an outburst from Mangione while being led into court on Tuesday, where he shouted about an “insult to the intelligence of the American people," Dickey told reporters he told his client to "shut his mouth," adding "Which is good, that’s what he needs to do. Hopefully there won’t be anymore of that."

Dickey also said that he believes that Mangione should have been granted bail at Tuesday's hearing and questions whether the second-degree murder charge filed in New York might be eligible for bail under Pennsylvania law.

"To simply say no bail, with all due respect to the judge, I believe bail should have been set," Dickey told reporters on Tuesday. "The judge could set $1 million bail. It could be $5 million bail, but damn it, you get bail. That’s what you do."

Investigators in New York and Pennsylvania are now trying to piece together timeline of his movements between the time the shooting occurred to the when Mangione was arrested.

"The burden is always on the government thank god, and that's their burden and they're going to have to produce some evidence and we're anxious to see it," Dickey said. (

Dickey would not comment on who hired him and said that he is not a public defender. Dickey said of his client that "he's presumed innocent lets not forget that, that's the number premise of our wonderful country."

Dickey told reporters that his client will fight extradition back to New York saying that they are entitled to see evidence in the case and that he has the constitutional right to do so and he's "proud of that."

"The burden is always on the government thank god, and that's their burden and they're going to have to produce some evidence and we're anxious to see it," Dickey said.
