One of the most notorious prisons in New York City just got another inmate.

The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York is the city's primary federal detention center and has been since 2021 when the Manhattan Metropolitan Center closed. It holds around 1,600 inmates with only a few awaiting trial.

One of those awaiting trial is Sean "Diddy" Combs who has been charged with crimes ranging from racketeering to sex trafficking. But the newest prisoner in MDC is Luigi Mangione, who is the suspect of the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione appeared in court in New York on Thursday for the first time for a 15 minute hearing. According to the Associated Press, Mangione didn't request bail and will stay detained. However he can request bail at a later date if he so wishes.

He will be held at MDC, according to CNN, which is known for its less than ideal conditions. Previously, a federal prison consultant, Sam Mangel, spoke to The Mirror and called MDC "the worst possible facility in all the detention centers in the United States.”

Mangel has clients that are currently being held at MDC. "I can tell you from speaking with them and doing video calls with them almost daily it is the most, the most dangerous unsecured facility, detention center, in the country for a number of reasons," he said.

"It’s tremendously understaffed," he explained. "The physical plan is in abhorrent shape. So in addition to having issues with maintenance and the HVAC system and the water, and the toilets…and the mold issues because they’re so understaffed they simply don’t have the personnel or budget to fix it."

The prison isn't the only thing that Combs and Mangione have in common. Mangione's attorney, Karen Freidman Agnifilo, is married to one of Combs' attorneys, Marc Agnifilo.

Combs is in prison until his trial in May of next year, after multiple bail requests have been denied. He has pled not guilty to all charges and denied any and all wrongdoings.
