Never Mind: Trump Claimed He’d End the Ukraine War ‘In 24 Hours’ – Now He Says ‘Ask Russia’
Since taking office on Monday, President Donald Trump has not ended Russia’s war in Ukraine as he promised he would do while on the campaign trail.
“They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians,” Trump said at a CNN town hall in 2023. “I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done — I’ll have that done in 24 hours.”
Trump has repeatedly claimed that had he been reelected, Russian President Vladimir Putin would not have ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Speaking via video at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday, Trump took questions after delivering a long and rambling speech.
“Mr. President, when you’re back here in Davos next year, will there be then a peace agreement with Ukraine and Russia by then?” a forum moderator asked.
Trump replied:
Well, you’re gonna have to ask Russia. Ukraine is ready to make a deal. Just so you understand, this is a war that should’ve never started. If I were president, it would never have started. This is a war that should have never, ever been started. And it wasn’t started during my– there was never even talk about it. I knew that it was the apple of President Putin’s eye, but I also knew that there was no way he was going in and he wasn’t going in. And then when I was out, uh, bad things happened, bad things were said. A lot of stupidity all around. And you end up with what you have now. You have all these bombed-out cities. They look like demolition sites with many people killed.
The president has been skeptical of aid to Ukraine. Shortly after taking office, he suspended U.S. foreign assistance programs for 90 days pending a review. Moreover, a faction within the congressional GOP has loudly opposed aid to the besieged country. As a senator last year, Vice President JD Vance said blocking aid to Ukraine was his second-biggest priority.
