NEW POLL: Whopping 85% of Greenland Residents Don’t Want to Join US — Rebuking Trump’s Recent Claim That They ‘Would Love’ to
President Donald Trump recently claimed his push for the United States to take over Greenland is widely supported by that country’s residents. But a brand new poll shows otherwise.
According to a poll published by Danish outlet Berlingske and Greenland outlet Sermitsiaq (via CBS), a whopping 85 percent of Greenland residents say they do not want to become part of the United States. Just 6 percent are in favor of joining the U.S., while another 9 percent are undecided.
The data runs counter to Trump’s public statements insisting the country’s citizens want to be part of the United States.
“The people of Greenland would love to become a state of the United States of America,” Trump said during a Jan. 9 news conference. “We were greeted with tremendous love and affection and respect. The people would like to be a part of the United States.
Donald Trump Jr. also visited Greenland earlier this month and claimed to have found widespread support for a U.S. move. When asked during a Jan. 8 Newsmax interview whether Greenlanders want to join the United States, Trump Jr. said, “100 percent.
“I mean, honestly, I didn’t see a single negative,” Trump Jr. added. “I mean, we had crowds waving as we were landing.”
The apparent lack of public support seems unlikely to deter the president — who views a Greenland takeover as essential for defense purposes.
“We need Greenland for national security purposes,” Trump told reporters during the Jan. 8 presser. He added that Denmark “should give it up because we need it.”
