A horrific stabbing rampage has occurred in Amsterdam, leaving five victims wounded at the famed Dam Square, including two Americans.
An eyewitness described the chilling event, recounting an "icy scream" that precipitated widespread panic earlier today. In response to the chaos, a significant number of police personnel, multiple ambulance crews, and even an air ambulance descended upon the scene - with eerie similarities to a Netflix drama.
According to a store employee's account, there was a sudden burst of shouting and screaming before people hastily fled toward the site of the disturbance. Amsterdam's mayor, Femke Halsema, has reportedly stepped away from a council debate as a result of the unfolding event, local news outlets declare.
Mayor Halsema, mayor of Amsterdam on behalf of the Amsterdam Police and the Amsterdam Public Prosecution Office, said: "The police investigation is in full swing and is currently the highest priority. We hope to gain clarity soon about the background of this horrific stabbing incident. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and loved ones."
Among the victims are a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man, both American nationals; a 26-year-old man from Poland; a 73-year-old woman from Belgium; and a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam.
Police have arrested a male suspect. His identity is currently being investigated.
The motive behind the suspect's violent stabbing spree remains mysterious, according to police reports, reports the Mirror.
Amsterdam Police disclosed on social media: "In a stabbing incident at the Sint Nicolaasstraat nearby the Dam square five people have been injured. One suspect has been arrested." Furthermore, a subsequent social media announcement read: "A motive is currently still unclear, but part of our investigation."
It was reported by The Daily Star that trams in the area have shut down with no service between Amsterdam Centraal and Dam Square as authorities come to terms with the situation. Footage shared across social media shows an air ambulance landing on the historic square as crowds of onlookers gather.
"We are present at the Sint Nicolaasstraat near the Dam after a report of a stabbing incident with injuries. There is therefore a cordon, also on the Dam. More information will follow,' the city's police department said on X.
Local media reported at least 14 cop cars and an officer on a motorcycle were at the scene in front of the royal palace . It was also reported that a fire engine had arrived at Dam Square, with its siren on.
The stabbing frenzy comes after several people were left injured in Germany when a person went on a rampage at the Holocaust Memorial and the U.S. Embassy in Berlin. One person was reportedly seriously injured in the attack, but the exact number of wounded remains unclear. The injured person was reportedly a man who was attacked in the field of stelaes at the memorial at around 6 p.m. local time.
The man was last reported to be in critical condition at a local hospital, where he was taken directly after the attack. A bloody knife was subsequently found at the scene, the police told local outlet NIUS.de. A later report indicated that his wounds were non-life-threatening, though he remained hospitalized.
Several others who were injured at the scene were reportedly being cared for on-site. The suspect is believed to have fled the scene. A man was later arrested, police said.
The memorial is currently being searched for clues, though the only thing found so far was the bloody knife. The individual who was seriously injured in the attack reportedly lost a significant amount of blood, though how much remains unclear.
It was reported that the nature of the wounds of the others was unclear. Some bloody clothes littered the scene after the attack, with some pictures showing a wallet and hoodie lying on a stone block near the stelae.
