This year's April full moon is also a supermoon - which occurs when the moon reaches its cloests point to Earth in its orbit.

This makes it appear larger and more radiant than normal.

The orange and red tints are caused by dusty particles on the earths atmosphere - and after packets of light pass through the atmosphere it produces a pink hue.

Why is it called the 'Pink Moon'?

Some Eastern Native tribes call this month's moon the "pink moon" due to its association with early spring wildflowers, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

The Maine Farmers' Almanac specifically attributes the name to the herb moss pink, a native Eastern US plant that blooms in early spring.

The moon is also known as the sprouting grass moon, the egg moon, and among coastal tribes the fish moon.

The fish name comes from shad fish, which begin to spawn around this time of year, according to NASA.

Other names include the "breaking ice moon" or the "moon when the ducks come back".

What is a Blue Supermoon?

What zodiac sign is April's 'Pink Moon' in?

The zodiac sign of each full moon is determined by its position in the night sky, relative to astrological signs.

This year, the pink moon falls in Libra, according to celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas.

He explained that this air sign is associated with partnerships, commitments, and both personal and professional unions.

Thomas said: "Libra is a charming, social and kind zodiac sign that is represented by the symbolic image of the scales or balance.

"This shows their innate desire for fairness, justice and logic.

"By working with others, we can advance our goals and become greater than just ourselves."

HERE are some of the most interesting moon phases and when to see them...

Blue Moon refers to the occasion when a full moon appears for the second time in the same month, this is very rare and the next Blue Moon should occur on Halloween in 2020.

The Harvest Moon appears around the time of the autumnal equinox when farmers tend to do their main crop harvesting.

Supermoon appears when it is at its closest point to Earth and therefore at its brightest, the next one will appear in September.

Blood Moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse, the next one should happen in May 2020.

Each month of the year actually has its own special full moon phenomenon, they are as follows:

  • January: Wolf Moon
  • February: Snow Moon
  • March: Worm Moon
  • April: Pink Moon
  • May: Flower Moon
  • June: Strawberry Moon
  • July: Buck Moon
  • August: Sturgeon Moon
  • September: Full Corn Moon
  • October: Hunter's Moon
  • November: Beaver Moon
  • December: Cold Moon.

Thomas also said that since Libra is a zodiac sign deeply connected to partnership and balance, the pink moon amplifies these energies.

This makes it an ideal time for rituals focused on relationships, either personal or professional.

The expert added: "Because Libra is an air sign, using communication, mantras, or journaling can be excellent tools for manifestation.

"Libra is also ruled by Venus, the planet of love, so using the color pink can be helpful. Using rose quartz, incense, or flowers can also aid you."

From Chinese all the way to Hebrew cultures, the moon has been revered due to its celestial influence.
