‘The Homegrowns Are Next’: Trump Promises to Send American Citizens to El Salvador in Harrowing Comments to Bukele
“The homegrowns are next.”
Those are the chilling words uttered by President Donald Trump to El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele surreptitiously captured in a casual Oval Office conversation before the White House pool entered.
Aaron Rupar captured and published a rough video conversation on social media. The Atlantic’s Jonathan Lemire shared the video, providing context: “Before pool entered, this exchange was captured on the El Salvador government’s live stream. Trump endorses sending ‘homegrown’ U.S. prisoners to El Salvador—meaning American citizens to notorious foreign prisons.”
The notion of sending American criminals to foreign nations came up in the press availability when Trump was asked if the United States intends to pay for the prisons in El Salvador.
“Do you want to pay for those facilities to be open if you want them to be built?” he was asked.
“I’d do something. We’d help them out,” Trump replied. “They’re great facilities, very strong facilities, and they don’t play games. ”
“I’d like to go a step further. I mean, I said it to (Attorney General) Pam [Bondi] I don’t know what the laws are —we always have to obey the laws— but we also have homegrown criminals that push people into subways that hit elderly ladies on the back of the head with a baseball bat when they’re not looking, that are absolute monsters,” Trump added. “I’d like to include them in the group of people to get them out of the country, but you’ll have to be looking at the laws on that.”
Experts have noted that there is no legal way for the president to send legal US citizens to foreign prisons.
