Fair Isle sewing

Hello friends! Guess what? January is my turn to lead the collaborative quilt for the local do. Good Stitches charity quilting bee. Yay!

Last year I made this snowflake block that I love, love, love, but it didn’t have a quilty destination. I decided then and there that it would be part of my next do. Good Stitches quilt. In fact, I’m adapting one of the Penny Sampler alternative quilt layouts for our group quilt.

This is a child-size sketch of the Fair Isle quilt layout. All the blocks and the throw-size Fair Isle layout were developed for the Penny Sampler Pattern Club 2020.

Snowflakes are perfect in January. Plus, I thought it would be fun for my bee-mates to choose which blocks they will make in this sampler-style quilt. The blocks vary in difficulty from simple to advanced.

The finished quilt will be donated to a child through a Dutch chapter of Salvation Army.

Earlier this month I shared the quilt plan with Comfort Circle of do. Good Stitches. The Dala horse block assignments were snatched up pretty quick! I’m making some of the supporting blocks, including the diamonds and squares.

What do you think of these balloon dogs for the little squares? I think they’re perfect! I want the quilt to have bright, cheerful colors, which pop in contrast with the gray background. And, speaking of pop, these doggies and the other fun prints I’m sewing with in this post are all from the Ruby Star Society Pop collection, released sometime in 2019, I believe.

A nice way to while away the afternoon!

So, this is what I have so far, now that I’ve finished the Diamonds row and the Penny Squares row. I’ve also pulled some other Pop fabrics as possibilities for the quilt back and a fun, multicolor stripe for the binding.

Bee members have also started sewing! Just look at that red Dala Horse made by Carol H. and those hearts by Lotje M. Love them!

This is shaping up to be a very cheery little quilt.
