This week we talk about some other podcasts we listen to. Some are related to filmmaking, some aren’t, but they all make us more rounded individuals.

Today’s film, STALL, comes to us from Devon Dresback and Bret Kalmbach, and was submitted through SaturdayNightShorts.com. An award-winning film that doesn’t play around, STALL is a thrilling example of what one can do with a single location and a limited budget. We are slowly introduced to 4 characters stuck within a stall–never seeing more than a few pairs of feet. This gives us a feelings of anxiety and claustrophobia. The short had a good concept that was well executed.

There’s a very short behind the scenes video that Matt and I didn’t find until after we recorded (because we’re dummies), but I’ve linked it below and it answers some questions we had. It impressed us as well.

First we chat a bit about what we’ve been doing (sort of), then we discuss Paul Allen’s Vulcan Productions and their short film series about encouraging and educating voters. Finally we review a beautiful short film called It Eats You Up by Kassim Norris. This short was shot on actual Super 16mm film, which makes it extra special. I recommend taking a look at the links in the description for the short as they provide some nice context and a deep look into the creative process.

Check out the film and the story, and welcome back. We missed your faces.

When creating a short film it’s important to have a point of view, and fill it with characters that have similar and contrasting views. The concepts and ideas in the film challenge the audience’s preexisting beliefs and the filmmaker, in turn, shows respect for the audience.

In Kip Calendine’s ATHEISTS ANONYMOUS a young woman, struggling with her belief, attends a group meeting to find answers. Unfortunately for her, the meeting raises more questions than answers. Matt and I enjoyed the cinematography and concept of this short, while the sound design, story balance, and dialogue could use some work.
