The Everyone’s Agnostic Podcast began the summer of 2014 by Cass Midgley and Bob Pondillo. In November 2018, Marie D’Elephant replaced Bob as co-host. Starting November 2019, Cass decided to close down the Everyone’s Agnostic podcast to prioritize other life callings.

Marie D’Elephant picks up the torch and continues the conversations that Cass started. While his podcast’s goal was to reassure others that they are not alone, Everyone’s Autonomous seeks to turn minds to the present and the future. If there is no god dictating our actions, how then shall we live? Do we have agency over our decisions? What does it mean, then, that every human on this earth is autonomous? How do we reclaim our autonomy over our minds, our sexuality, our finances, our relationships and so much more?

About Jennifer Knapp:

Jennifer Knapp is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, author, and advocate. Her impressive history includes selling over one million albums with her first three releases Kansas(debut 1998, Gold-certified), Lay It Down(2000), and The Way I Am(2001). She has earned four Dove Awards and two Grammy nominations. The Kansas-born musician has toured the globe with artists such as Jars of Clay and was featured on the Lilith Fair Tour in 1999 and again in 2010. Knapp has received critical acclaim for her human approach to the divine, with The Los Angeles Times calling her “a rising star” and People Magazine describing her as “an uncommonly literate songwriter.”

With a considerable fan base and critical and commercial successes, Knapp walked away from music in 2002 at the height of her career. After a seven-year hiatus she returned in 2010 with a renewed passion for music showcased in her album Letting Go, which debuted at No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart. Set Me Free followed in 2014 on Righteous Babe Records in conjunction with a memoir, Facing the Music: My Story, published by Simon & Schuster. Her 2017 album Love Comes Back Around, produced by Viktor Krauss, pairs her fearless songwriting and strong, expressive voice with rootsy arrangements.

As the first major artist known by the Christian music world to speak openly about LGBTQ identity, her unique position has created opportunities for a national dialogue, including appearances on Larry King Live and on the TEDx stage. In 2012 Knapp founded the advocacy non-profit organization, Inside Out Faith.

A true Renaissance woman, Knapp recently completed a master’s degree in theological studies from Vanderbilt Divinity School.

An Iowa native and leading authority on 90s Christian rock, Josiah released his debut novel Carnality: Dancing On Red Lake in 2015. A psychological horror about growing up in an isolated farming community fueled by pentecostal Christianity and methamphetamine, the book was hailed as “one of the finest novels to come out of Denver’s burgeoning arts scene.”

Josiah is currently promoting his next installment Carnality: Sebastian Phoenix and the Dark Star, which was written in part at Owl Farm in Woody Creek, Colorado – the longtime home of Hunter S. Thompson.

Alex is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists, and a clinical fellow with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. His songwriting has been a major part of my personal soundtrack for over a decade now. Scheduling an interview proved that perseverance can be damn hard, but rewarding. As I spoke to TW Walsh and then Derek Webb, Bazan seemed to be the connective tissue of the conversations. It was an honor to be able to speak with David Bazan about his new album and his perspectives on wrestling with belief through songwriting.

His new album Care is available everywhere plus be on the lookout for his new side project Lo Tom. Their self-titled album will be available on July 14th from Barsuk.

Tim was born in Taiwan, but at the age of 10, legally moved to Miami with his mother and sister, where they lived for seven years (with a good chunk of that time also spent in Ecuador) before a legal mess ensued, forcing them to return to Taiwan. They managed to make their way to Canada, and then back into the U.S., but were forced to live in fear and anonymity for nearly 20 years.

Now a legal citizen, Tim is finally ready to open up about this harrowing period of his life, starting with A Memories Chase. [Riot Act Media]

Due to a series of legal issues out of his hands, Timothy Den spent twenty years as an illegal immigrant in the United States. The problem was, being raised in the US, he had nowhere else he could call home. This week I speak to Tim about his band Ohvaur, their new full length album A Memories Chase and his incredible story.

On June 19th, Exodus International (a Christian “Gay Therapy” organization well known for their “Pray The Gay Away” strategies) announced that they were closing up shop. This announcement was came by way of Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International with a blog post simply titles “I Am Sorry.” Chambers then announced a day later at the 38th Annual Exodus Freedom Conference that Exodus International would close it’s doors.

Some critics are suspect. John Shore lays out that this is simply a “re-branding” of Exodus International. This week Joey and Sean discuss this subject with Greg Horton and Rob Davis.

This week, I (Sean) travel to Brea, California to visit the Brea Congregational United Church of Christ. I went to the morning Sunday School where they were doing A Faith & Reason series by John Dominic Crossan “The Challenge of Jesus,” then I visited the church service. Everyone at the church had a smile on their face. This was a faith community that was non-judgmental, greeting me with love and genuine joy. Most notably, Brea Congregational UCC was a place where members of the LGBTQ community could worship freely and participate freely. After the service, I had the opportunity to sit down with the pastors, The Rev. Rick Marshall and The Rev. Jeanyne Slettom as well as 4 members of the church (one who had just become a member that morning). Enjoy the conversation!

The History Channel‘s presentation of the miniseries “event” The Bible has sparked reactions of all kinds. From Mega-Church Evangelicals like Rick Warren and Joel Olsteen enthusiasm about the “power” of the show, to biblical scholars such as Dr. Joel M. Hoffman voicing their distain for the show. After the first episode aired, we read many opinions on both sides. The one thing that didn’t seem to be discussed in depth was the obvious “Whitewashing” of all biblical characters. From the underwear model “perfection” of Adam and Eve, to the Scottish broague of Noah and the Brad Pitt look-a-like chosen to play Jesus; something didn’t gel. Thankfully, The Rev. Wil Gafney, Ph.D. wouldn’t let her disappointment stay quiet. Her article Black Samson & White Women on the History Channel turned many heads with her criticism of The History Channel’s (along with Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey) casting choices. This week, we are honored to be speaking with Dr. Gafney about her thoughts and opinions.

Topic: Gun Control

On December 14^th, 2012 a bloodthirsty madman shot his mother at home then proceded to kill 20 children and 6 adults at a small town school: Sandy Hook Elementary School. This was the second-deadliest school shooting in US History after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre and can also be considered one of the most heinous with the killing of innocent children.

This incident sent the Gun Control discussion through the roof, prompting our Government to respond. On January 16^th, President Barack Obama signed 23 Excecutive Orders while also sending a message to Congress that he’d push an Assault Rifle Ban including a Magazine Clip Limit of 10 rounds.

President Obama: “Let me be absolutely clear: like most Americans, I believe the 2nd Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms.”

President Obama: “With rights come responsibilities.”

Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
Propose rule making to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.
Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.
Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

If Assault Rifles are banned, where should the government draw the line? What defines an Assault Rifle?

From Jason Stout: “You can… You just have to apply for a NFA tax stamp to the ATF if your state allows it, then get it approved by your local sheriff.

The problem with those who are anti-gun is that they usually have no clue what they are talking about when it comes to firearm laws and even the firearms they choose to discriminate against. Even if they ban “assault” rifles, you can still apply for NFA tax stamps and get what you want as long as you follow the law.

Personally, I think that all this hubbub about this ban talk is not going anywhere. At least not at the federal level. Not at least for another 2 years. Those rascally republicans still hold the the congress at the very least till then.

Per the NFA… These items would fall under this category:

Destructive Devices (DDs)—there are two broad classes of destructive devices:

Devices such as grenades, bombs, explosive missiles, poison gas weapons, etc.

Any firearm with a bore over 0.50 except for shotguns or shotgun shells which have been found to be generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes. (Many firearms with bores over 0.50″, such as 12-gauge shotguns, are exempted from the law because they have been determined to have a “legitimate sporting use”.)”

“I think there may be ways to improve the process for people to become gun owners, but I don’t think more regulation, in terms of limitations on what people can own is needed. As long as there are no fully automatic weapons around, I’m fine with that.”

“Oh Joey, why do I even post on a controversial subject. It only leads to me being annoyed by people. I like that you weren’t brought up to be obsessive about guns like so many people are.”

“The real issue is still inner city areas. Violent crime is down 50 percent the last ten years. It’s sad to me that incidents like sandy hook (which I highly question) are fueling this argument when they are such a small portion of the problem”

“Reason we need those type of weapons is if we are truley going to be able to defend if a tyrant got in America, we as Americans would have to defend against those weopens shooting at us. How would we be able to defend ourselves when the people we would be fighting has those weopens? The 2nd amendment is in case our Gov tries to ever take over with a Tyrant…

people don’t remember the last time we had the same laws in place and it made no difference. People that want to kill people will find a way to get it done. Whether they get assault weapons via black market or they use a gun that only holds 9 rounds in the end people will be dead and it really doesn’t matter how many rounds it took or what type of weapon used, knives, forks, hands, rope, hammer…they all can kill.
The gun doesn’t do the killing, the person consciously making the decision to pull the trigger do the killing. Can’t fix people by taking stuff away, you have to change their heart.”

“I own several “Assault” weapons… They don’t just open their own case, unlock, load themselves and start killing people.
Government infringing on our rights is more frightening than people with guns.
[I own guns] Because I enjoy shooting. I target shoot, hunt, and shoot competitively. But most of all, I have one because our second amendment in the Bill of Rights states that I can. I also have several pistols and other rifles. Shooting sports are and have been a way of life for me. I don’t see how demonizing a piece of metal will keep any of you safer. Good people with firearms can. Criminals will always break the law… But saying that a law abiding citizen should be punished for the firearm he/she chooses is an infringement on our rights. I’m all about freedom. My forefathers and family members didn’t fight in countless wars and come home maimed and heartbroken so that the government can dictate every action or choice I make. Planned parenthood kill over 300,000 babies a year. “Assault” rifles killed a total of 1% of all firearm related deaths last year. More deaths were caused by murder with a hammer than assault rifles last year.”

“Military grade rifles are ones that pose a threat to the government if they take away our rights as citizens. The plan is to sufficiently disarm Americans so the government can force us to do their bidding, rather than the other way around.

Just as tax increases were not about lowering the deficit, gun control is not about saving the lives of students.”

“This is exactly what the “other” camp thought he would do/say. From what I have read, this is exactly what Hitler did/said before he disarmed and “exterminated” SIX. MILLION. HUMAN BEINGS. That’s 6,000,000 men, women and children. Why would you assume the possibility that this would silence the comparisons?”

“So I am not an expert on military assault rifles, or much of anything, but in an up close and personal situation it seems shotguns are more destructive than rifles. Yet I can’t recall ever hearing about them in this debate.”

Why aren’t they just contrails?

Contrails: or vapor trails are long thin artificial clouds that sometimes form behind aircraft. Their formation is most often triggered by the water vapor in the exhaust of aircraft engines, but can also be triggered by the changes in air pressure in wingtip vortices or in the air over the entire wing surface.[1] Like all clouds, contrails are made of water, in the form of a suspension of billions of liquid droplets or ice crystals.
Depending on the temperature and humidity at the altitude the contrail forms, they may be visible for only a few seconds or minutes, or may persist for hours and spread to be several miles wide. Persistent spreading contrails are thought to have a significant effect on global climate.[2]

New Atheism is the name given to the ideas promoted by a collection of modern atheist writers who have advocated the view that “religion should not simply be tolerated but should be countered, criticized, and exposed by rational argument wherever its influence arises.”[1]

The term is commonly associated with individuals such as Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens (together called “the Four Horsemen of New Atheism” in a 2007 debate they held on their criticisms of religion, a name that has stuck),[2] along with Victor J. Stenger,[3] A.C. Grayling,[4] and P.Z. Myers.[5] Several best-selling books by these authors, published between 2004 and 2007, form the basis for much of the discussion of New Atheism.[6]

Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities.[1][2] In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities.[3][4][5] Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist.[4][5][6][7] Atheism is contrasted with theism,[8][9] which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists.[9][10]

Professor Sapunov said there have been no confirmed sightings of yetis because the animals have an acute sense of danger.

Indeed, the new neurologically focused definition debunks, in whole or in part, a host of common conceptions about addiction. Addiction, the statement declares, is a “bio-psycho-socio-spiritual” illness characterized by (a) damaged decision-making (affecting learning, perception, and judgment) and by (b) persistent risk and/or recurrence of relapse; the unambiguous implications are that (a) addicts have no control over their addictive behaviors and (b) total abstinence is, for some addicts, an unrealistic goal of effective treatment.

The bad behaviors themselves are all symptoms of addiction, not the disease itself. “The state of addiction is not the same as the state of intoxication,” the ASAM takes pains to point out. Far from being evidence of a failure of will or morality, the behaviors are the addict’s attempt to resolve the general “dysfunctional emotional state” that develops in tandem with the disease. In other words, conscious choice plays little or no role in the actual state of addiction; as a result, a person cannot choose not to be addicted. The most an addict can do is choose not to use the substance or engage in the behavior that reinforces the entire self-destructive reward-circuitry loop.
