Hang on though, you pay money for those tools - what if they were free? And fully customised to your workflow. And only had the things you need and none of the things you didn't. And the UI was Goldilocks "juuusst right."

These sorts of things might be possible if you spend just a few hours learning to vibe code and build your own apps and tools. Which is what Adrian has been doing!

The Wikipedia definition of a portrait is 125 words long. As you read it, it weirdly seems to get narrower rather than explaining multiple aspects of what portraiture means. So we take some time this week to share our thoughts and ideas on portraiture, what it means to us, to the subjects and to the viewer.

When was the last time a child really said "are we nearly there yet" on a long car journey? We often think of photo editing as that bit we do on computers - or phones or in the darkroom - at a point in time after we capture a photo. A little way back, Canva bought Affinity. People worried. More recently, Affinity teased a big announcement. People really worried. But, as we talk a week following that announcement, Affinity is free forever and has added a million users.

And after some time and effort you can get those nice images where the leaves are all white and the sky is a deep black colour.

But today, it is easier than ever to shoot IR and in fact you can do it on your phone. Chris tells us how it's done and shares his experiments.

One effective way to make sure your software subscriptions don't rack up is to switch off the auto-renew. Adrian has actively built this into his photography hobby - choosing a new thing every year based on whatever creative whim takes him at the time. There’s a lot of commentary on social media at the moment about modern tools making us too comfortable to create and (of course) algorithms sundering our culture. But it’s a multi-dimensional thing for sure and each of those dimensions you could pick one side or the other.

So what happened to suffering for our art? What happened to 10,000hours? Are we all destined to morph into super-saturated influencers in sponsored bikinis? Or should we go back to pouring chemicals onto glass plates?

Every so often we like to ask the question “can we capture still photos from video?” For sure the arts of photography and filming require different camera settings to get desired effects - but what if you just shot video without an ND and let the shutter speed ramp up until you lose the motion blur? Or perhaps go the other way and optimise for video at capture and then process as still images?

We have a whole host of AI tools now to help us. Upscaling, creative adding of detail, plain old “fix my image please AI” tools, the list is ever growing.

A mystery to solve! A collection of color slides and unprocessed film from the 1960s and 1970s was discovered in the 1980s. The images, separated from their photographer, were meticulously developed by two Bay Area historians. Recently they ran a kickstarter to help them fund the project of processing, curating and investigating all the images - including an objective to identify the photographer!

Devastating earthquake or storm in a teacup? Many of us have used and loved DPReview.com over the years and soon it will be shut down. As you might expect from TFOP, our conversation starts here by asking "what does it all mean?" and then ranges far and wide 😂.

But what happens to the enormously valuable resource that dpreview.com has created over the last 25 years? It is reported that the Internet Archive will host a backup to keep it available for us all. Here's hoping!

We all get super excited about new photo toys. How come though these are all at one end of the creative process - the capture. Cameras are (of course) pretty cool and lenses likewise. Arguably, printers are less sexy but have just as much impact on your images. Discuss!

Chris has given up on dubbed movies (in Germany most movies get dubbed), Jeremjah calls dubbing a crime. The movie The Champion uses a new technique to dub a movie in a way that you haven't seen before. Watch here starting 10 minutes into the video and we guarantee your mind will be blown. This new technique has promise and of course a dystopian angle. How could it not.
