As if the reMarkable 2 tablet wasn't enough like writing on paper, now you can [disguise it as a “regular” notebook][1] and no one who glances at you jotting and scribbling away will be the wiser ?

It replicates the timeless design of classic composition books and helps protect your device from scratches and such. The spine of the case has a holder for the official reMarkable stylus that aligns with the tablet's built-in magnets, so it's held in place even better than before and is still able to charge when you're not using it.

Considering how [the case is just $21 on Amazon][1] (down from $36) as I write this on September 16th, 2024, you're looking at a real good value right here.

If you're going to get my attention about something as seemingly basic as a screwdriver, you need to have some kind of special selling point, because at this point I've seen it all. Or at least that's how it felt before I discovered [Felo's Ergonic screwdrivers.][1]

The defining feature here is the multi-component handle, which combines an impact-proof plastic core surrounded by a flexible gel that is then coated with a squishy rubber-like (elastomer) material.

The result is a handle that actually conforms to your grip as you turn it, distributing the force across your entire hand to deliver optimal torque (up to 30% more versus traditional screwdrivers) to the tip, all while relieving hand/wrist strain. No more painful pressure points on your palm and fingers!

Pro tip: In the event you require even more torque than your hand alone can provide, each Ergonic handle has a hole through which you can insert a second screwdriver tip and rotate it for maximum power ?

On top of that, the handles are designed to be anti-roll, so you can set them on inclined or vibrating surfaces without fear of them getting away from you while you work.

Get a set of six Ergonic screwdrivers [$43 on Amazon.][1]

While we've featured some of Ooni's outdoor pizza ovens in the past, none yet have approached the absolutely massive size of their latest creation, the [Koda 2 Max.][1]

With a whopping 24" cooking area and two independently controlled gas burners that heat up a pair of 0.8" cordierite pizza stones (their thickest yet), this beast is the one you'll turn to whenever demand for your homemade pizzas becomes too much for any other oven to handle.

Unlike other Ooni models, the Koda 2 Max isn't designed to be portable or used indoors; rather, it's intended more as a permanent fixture of your backyard.

With it, you can cook a single 20" New York-style pizza or a pair of 10–12" Neopolitan-style pies side-by-side, allowing you to quickly and easily feed the whole family — and probably the rest of the neighborhood while you're at it.

Thanks to those dual cooking zones, you still have the ability to cook just one small pizza if that's all you need right then, or you can work with two completely different styles of pizza at once, no problem. You can even cook non-pizza dishes like steaks, veggies, small skillet dishes, party dips...the list goes on.

What's more, mounted on the front is a Digital Temperature Hub that provides instant heat readings from different places in the oven and sends them to your phone so you can stay on top of things even after stepping away. Included with the hub are two food temperature probes for use with roasted meats, which is convenient.

The Koda 2 Max is [$999 at Ooni's site][1] and available in either propane (tank) or natural gas (gas line) versions.

RFID blocking — which shields your card data from nearby digital thieves — has practically become a required feature in wallets anymore, so how is any given product supposed to stand out from the crowd? Well, umoven's solution was to [insert an aluminum card holder with an ejection slider on the side][1] that pops up your most used cards for easy access.

You can fit up to 6 cards in that metal frame, then stash another 6 cards in other spots (3–4 in the bifold cover flap, and 1–2 on the back). The frame and exterior material are held together with metal hexagonal screws, and a magnetic mini-screwdriver is included so you can re-tighten them later if they loosen after a while of everyday use.

Lastly, a built-in money clip allows you to keep a bit of cash on hand in case you ever need that.

Get this wallet for [$40 on Amazon][1] in your choice of [Carbon Fiber][1] or one of three leather colors: Brown, Coffee Brown, or Dark Black.

And yet, despite their retro looks, new models of the speakers are continually being released with future-ready features.

Both of them are Bluetooth LE audio-ready, which itself will enable Auracast functionality — meaning, you can connect your phone to one of the speakers via Bluetooth and it can then broadcast that audio to all other Auracast-enabled speakers/headphones nearby. You'll feel like a walking radio station. ?

(Note: Auracast functionality is expected to be rolled out via an over-the-air update.)

The speakers also deliver surprisingly powerful sound for their size.

The Emberton III, the larger of the two, comes packed with “True Stereophonic” sound, offering rich and full 360° audio that fills any room or outdoor space with ease over the course of ~32 hours of battery life per charge. Meanwhile, the still more portable [Willen II][w] offers harder-hitting bass and improved drivers over its predecessor and delivers up to 17 hours of playback.

Both speakers boast an IP67 dust- and waterproof rating, meaning they can each handle dust, dirt, and being submerged in water for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1m/3ft. These things are excellent travel companions for even the most rugged adventures.

Get the Emberton III for $170 and the [Willen II for $120.][w]

Today we've got one of the most unique and specialized tools I've encountered yet — the [Chopstick Master][1] by Bridge City Tool Works of Portland, Oregon. Currently in its second generation as I write this, the “CSMv2” allows users to precisely and easily handcraft their very own chopsticks, smooth tapers and all.

It's designed so that woodworkers of any level, even beginners and children, can reliably produce chopsticks they can use for themselves, gift to others, or perhaps sell at local craft fairs. The process takes only about 10–15 minutes too.

Watch their tutorial video to see how it works:

The Chopstick Master uses an angled jig to help shave down wooden chopstick blanks — a few varieties are included, but you can use whatever you like — into the perfect taper. It also includes a built-in chamfering tool to give chopstick tips a professional finish, rounding the edges slightly for a comfortable, ergonomic feel.

Also included is a sanding block to refine the chopsticks’ surface and ensure they are smooth to the touch, without any rough edges or splinters (although you may want to keep some 400-grit sandpaper nearby for the finer details). To finish things off, apply a thin coat of food-grade oil and let dry before storing/using.

There's a certain satisfaction that comes from being able to turn a piece of wood into a practical, usable item, especially if you have minimal experience. It could also be a fun way to introduce a kid to the world of woodworking.

As of September 9th, 2024 the Chopstick Master Gen. 2 is [marked down from $399 to $239.][1]

Anker's version is equipped with eight ports total:

USB-C Power Delivery input (up to 100W)

4K@60Hz HDMI port

2 USB-A data ports

3.5 mm AUX port

microSD card slot

SD 3.0 card slot

Whereas the Satechi supports pass-through charging speeds that top out at 60W max, [Anker's hub stand][1] can pass upwards of 100W (with 45W minimum required) to your connected iPad or tablet, and to power such a setup, we've written about several chargers that meet or exceed that capability — even in the car, if that's a concern for you.

The Anker's added height also grants some flexibility in how you angle the device for the most comfortable viewing and/or work usage:

Both hubs can revolutionize your iPad's (or other USB-C tablet's) productivity levels, but the [Anker stand][1] has just a bit more versatility over the Satechi in my opinion.

As of September 8th, 2024 you can [get it for $80 on Amazon][1] (down from $100).

UGREEN, the company who made them, has brought that same robotic charm [to their new “Uno” MagSafe power bank.][1]

Like the wall chargers before it, this magnetic wireless charger has a display on the back that shows different facial expressions based on the battery level of your iPhone:

Since it clamps onto the end or back of your desk (anything up to 3.3” thick), it doesn't really take up any of that valuable space, meaning you can “Keep. Your station. CLEAR!” and better focus on the task at hand. It's constructed pretty solidly too, so you don't have to worry about it going anywhere even if you're using a height-adjustable desk.

You also have a number of ways to configure and adapt the light for your setup, from its flexible five-point arm/head articulation system to its brightness level and 2700K–7500K color temperature range. What's more, it has built-in USB-C (5V) and USB-A (2V) ports for unobtrusively keeping your stuff charged.

Get this superb desk lamp for [$140 on Amazon][1] in your choice of [black][1] or white. If you need more than one lamp and want to save a few bucks, check out the $260 two-pack.

If you're willing to drop an extra $20 and aren't concerned as much about desk real estate, they offer a version with a base on their own website.

There are many modern spins on the classic French press coffee maker, each with interesting and beautiful design choices to stand out from the crowd. Admittedly however, not many of them have poured (get it?) nearly as much intention into filtering out coffee grit as the P7 press from Espro, who you may remember for their awesome travel coffee press.

Available in 18-ounce and [32-ounce][2] sizes, the P7 makes use of a double micro-mesh filter system they developed in-house, with one filter (ultra-fine) nesting inside the other (fine) to ensure no grit can get through, so the coffee that ends up in your cup is consistently smooth and clean.

Moreoever, the top/inner filter has a double-lipped silicone sealing gasket around its edge to create a tight barrier between the upper and lower portions of the carafe, which immediately stops the extraction once you press the plunger down, rather than letting it continue and thus become bitter before pouring.

Combine that seal with the press' double-walled stainless steel construction that keeps the results hot for hours, and you have a method of coffee brewing that takes only 4 minutes to prepare but can be enjoyed all morning long.

The Espro P7 French press is typically listed at $120 for the 18-ounce size and [$140 for the 32-ounce.][2] As I write this on September 4th, 2024 though, most of the color/size combos are marked down to various degrees, so jump on those deals while you can!

(Note: The Polished and Brushed stainless steel options are both top-rack dishwasher safe. The four color-coated options — Matte Black, Matte White, Aegean Blue, and Cranberry — are hand-wash only.)

I spent an embarrassing amount of time watching an ad the first time it popped up in my feed ?

Now, I'm linking to [a generic Amazon search page][1] rather than any one product here, because they're pretty much all the same thing as this:

Dangerously mesmerizing, isn't it? Keep [one of these][1] on your desk and use that uniquely visual + tactile experience to soothe anxiety/stress whenever it strikes. I imagine it could also be used by some people to increase focus at times.

Most of these toys are [priced around $9–$16 each][1] and there are plenty of colorways to choose from. Happy fidgeting!

The [86lux Pocket E1][1] is actually a bookmark light by design, with an ultra-thin (0.35") and light (60g) body that can mark your place, then unfolds up to 180° to separate the clip and light sections at reading time.

The lamp head itself can swivel left or right up to 90°, and adjusted up or down up to 60°, so there's a lot of flexibility in how you set it up. Plus, not only does it fit all sorts of book sizes, it can also easily be slipped into your pocket.

With a press of the side button, the LED (which is also steplessly dimmable) can be switched between three different color temperatures: amber (3000K), natural (4000K), and cool (5000K), all of which have a soft glow thanks to the frosted light pane pictured below. The 400mAh battery has a max runtime of 80 hours and recharges via USB-C when needed.

Sure, it's nothing so fancy as smart companions like Cozmo and Loona, but Botley is plenty clever enough for young'uns.

It comes as part of a 46-piece or [78-piece][2] activity set, both of which include a remote control used to program actions, two detachable faceplates with robot arms, 40 coding cards, and a coding starter guide. The larger set adds 6 double-sided tiles and 27 obstacle building pieces.

Botley can be “coded” to move in six directions, play music, follow a ‘track’ of black electrical tape, light up in the dark, play memory games with you, and it can even pretend to be a train, a police car, a ghost, or a dozen other things.

Up to 150 steps can be programmed into an action sequence, so there's plenty to keep your bright young coder busy as they learn creative problem solving and computational thinking skills.

Get the Botley 2.0 46-piece set for $64 or the [78-piece set for $81.][2] There's also a classroom bundle for $269 that combines several robot + accessory sets into one teacher-friendly package.

Anyone who's done some electronics soldering has wished for an ‘undo button’ when they mess something up — and who hasn't messed up at one point or another? Luckily, there are [solder suckers][1] (also known as desoldering pumps) that make the task of undoing soldering connections much simpler.

The Japanese-made [ENGINEER SS-02][1] is one of the best solder suckers I've come across, and way better than any basic sucker bulb for sure. The idea is, you reheat the problematic solder joint, use the SS-02's spring-loaded (and extremely satisfying) plunger mechanism to suck away the excess molten material, then try again.

In this excellent video, electronics guru Collin Cunningham (of “Collin's Lab” and Make: magazine fame) shows you everything you need to know about getting started with this type of tool:

The [SS-02][1] is a game changer for electronics hobbyists everywhere, not just because it's well-built (hello anodized aluminum body!) but also because of the heat-resistant silicone tubing at the tip, which creates a great seal over the contact area so you only have to suction the solder once and you're done.

The older I get, the less forgiving I become about the books I read. If I'm reading one and it doesn't grab me within the first couple chapters, I simply put it down and move onto another rather than make myself finish it. We all have only so much time in this world, and no one should waste such a precious resource on subpar entertainment.

I'm happy to say that V. E. Schwab's [A Darker Shade of Magic][1] (book 1 of the Shades of Magic trilogy) hooked me in the first few pages. I knew before the first chapter ended that this one's a keeper — I only wish I'd gotten to it sooner, since it released nearly a decade ago.

The story is set in a universe where four parallel Londons exist — each with varying degrees of magical influence, with the least magical one being essentially our world in the early 1800s — and all (well, three) of them have been crafted with a great degree of detail.

I went in thinking I would have a hard time keeping them all straight in my mind, but that was never a problem — Schwab's writing style makes everything fun and easy to follow. I found myself glued to the pages as this fun, fast-paced, and high-stakes adventure played out, and man do I wish I could visit Red London for a while to check out all the sweet magical stuff they have there.

Here's the story description:

Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.

Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.

Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

For me, the inventive world-building and intriguing magic system are the highlights of [A Darker Shade of Magic][1], and if you're like week-ago-me and haven't gotten around to reading it yet, I highly recommend giving it a shot. As for me, I'm eagerly anticipating reading book two!
