CJSW Writer’s Block – July 2019

For our July episode we chat with trailblazing food writer, and legendary New York Times restaurant critic Ruth Reichl about her new memoir, Save Me the Plums, in which she chronicles her ground-breaking 10-year tenure as editor-in-chief of Gourmet. The unparalleled powerhouse (also chef and bestselling author of Garlic and Sapphires, Tender at the Bone, Comfort Me with Apples, and the novel Delicious!), shares an insider’s take on the obsessions, intrigues, and delights of being at the centre of the explosion of contemporary food culture.

We also have an in-depth interview with poet and novelist Bruce Hunter about the re-release of his collection of linked short stories, Country Music Country, that celebrates the unsung landscape of blue-collar Canada with deep affection and respect. The author of six acclaimed books, Bruce was born and raised in Calgary. After stints teaching at York, Humber College and Banff, he taught in the School of English and Liberal Arts at Seneca College in Toronto for 25 years. Deafened as an infant and afflicted with low vision for much of his adult life, Bruce now writes full-time in addition to hosting readings and workshops on creativity and disability.
