It’s been years since I’ve updated this blog and I don’t like me for not taking time to blog more here. The thing is since I’ve started working full-time, it got harder for me to spend time for doing the research and write here.

I’ve decided to have a halt on this blog and continue writing on my personal blog – http://rishimohan.me, it’s going to be the next stop for all the things I used to share here.

I’ll also be updating the social handles with new name “thelifeofrishi”.

Google Assistant for Mac

I recently came across Mac Assistant, a project by Vansh Gandhi which brings Google’s recently announced Assistant to Mac. I tried Mac Assistant for some time and it worked pretty well.

To use it, you can download the app from the Github page and run it. It’ll ask you to log into your Google account. Once you’re logged in, you can start using it. It actually recognised speech faster than Siri and also responds pretty quickly.

Mac Assistant is still in development phase and some things don’t work as they’re supposed to do. Like it doesn’t show the results inline in the app and you only receive voice responses. It’s actually a very simple app, you click the Microphone icon and ask query. There are no options or settings. But it’s still a cool project by the developer.

Chapi: Save Anything from Web for Later

I recently came across Chapi, a web app that lets you save anything from web for later. I have tried lots of such services like Raindrop, Saved.io etc. Currently I use Dropmark for saving inspiration and design related stuff and I use Stash for saving links and sending webpages to my phone or other devices. It’s a good combination and works well for me.

What I like about Chapi is that apart from letting you save web pages just like most of such services, you can save text too. All you have to do is highlight the text and save it. It works pretty nicely, and when you access the page again from your Chapi timeline, it’ll highlight the exact text. Here’s a video of how it works:

Chapi also has nice and clean design. It’s currently in alpha but works pretty well. They recently added an option to tag each item for better organization but I seldom use tagging feature.

One more thing that I like about Chapi is that you can save content using Chrome extension in just one click, or with a shortcut. Just one click on save or a shortcut and that’s it. I hate adding tags or do anything after I do the save, it should be quick just like Chapi.

SodaPlayer for Mac

It’s been a while since I’m using SodaPlayer, a video player app that lets you play all the video formats on your Mac. Before SodaPlayer I used to use VLC Media Player for watching Videos and Movies and I used to think that VLC is probably the best out there because it comes with lots of features, most of which I never used.

SodaPlayer is a simple video player, with a design that will make you watch more Videos and Movies. I won’t call it the best video player, but in terms of experience and in terms of features, I would say it’s best for me.

The best thing about SodaPlayer is that it lets you stream torrents directly, all you have to do is copy the magnet link and paste it in the windows, or you can also add the .torrent file. It’ll automatically start playing the torrent. The other feature that I like and which I think is really useful is, it automatically finds the subtitles for the movie you’re playing and with just two clicks, you can add subtitles. You can choose to add subtitles in a lot of languages. Apart from these, SodaPlayer also lets you cast the video or movie that you’re playing to your TV using Chromecast or Apple TV which is another useful feature.

There are no settings or nothing that you can customize. But for me, the above features were enough to switch to SodaPlayer from VLC. It can definitely be made better, like it doesn’t support Media keys right now and there are other things too, but I think developers are doing excellent job in bettering the app. If you see the changelog, you’ll find that the updates are regular and there are lot of feature additions since it’s release, so kudos to the devs for the great work.

Firewatch Wallpapers

When I first had a look at Firewatch’s reveal trailer, I was literally stunned by the visuals of the game. Of all the games I’ve seen in my life, Firewatch has to be the best game in terms of graphics.

Campo Santo, the independent game studio behind Firewatch posted three wallpapers based on the Firewatch game yesterday on their blog. The wallpapers are really amazing and are available for download on this blog post. The wallpapers are available for iPhones, Tablets and Desktops.

Momentum — A Simple Habit Tracking App

Although I never had any plans to track my habits but I started doing it since the start of this year. It was all because of an app called Momentum that I discovered a couple of days back, Momentum’s minimal interface convinced me to download it on my iPhone.

Momentum is a simple habit tracker available for iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac which helps you form new habits. It’s based on Jerry Seinfeld’s productivity secret of not breaking the chain.

Adding habits is easy and all you need to do it hit the plus icon on the top right. I had no idea if it’ll really work for me or not, so I started with entering three simple habits that I really wanted me to form, waking up early, walk at least 5000 steps and sleep before 12:30. If you’re not sure what to enter, it also shows a list of habits in Tips like Exercise, or Inbox Zero and more which you can get started with.

You can set the days on which you want to repeat a habit, so for example if you are adding a habit and you want it to repeat only on specific days such as on Monday and Tuesday, you can just select those days in the Repeat section. Unselected days will be skipped automatically. It also lets you set a reminder for the habit, so if you want to go for cycling at 9, you can set a reminder for it to get notified.

One of the best thing about Momentum is that it allows flexible scheduling. It’s obvious that you won’t be able to or would not want to complete some habits every single day, just like I don’t like to wake up early on holidays. So what you can do is set a Weekly target for every habit by selecting the number of days a week you want to complete the habit.

Once you’re done entering all the habits you want to form, all you need to do is accomplish your goals on time and maintain the streak. On the main screen, the app displays seven grey blocks, one under each day for each of your habit. A grey blocks signifies that the habit is yet to be completed for that day, white blocks are manually or automatically skipped habits, and when you check off a habit, the block will turn green.

Checking off a habit is simple, just tap on the grey block once and you’re done. You can manually skip a habit for a day, just hold on the grey block and it’ll allow you Skip or Add Note. Tapping on Skip will skip the habit for that day and you won’t even lose your current streak, which is a nice feature for days when you cannot complete the habit for some reason. You can also add notes with the habits. One nice use of notes is that you can add notes such as why you skipped or something specific such as what did you do at the gym on that day.

Momentum also features a Today widget which you can add to your notification center to quickly check off your habits. You can also check your weekly progress right from the widget which is nice.

I have been using Momentum since almost a week now and I think it’s a great app. Since I don’t like clutter in the Notification center, I don’t use Momentum’s today widget. Instead I have reminders setup for all the habits and since the notifications are interactive, I check off the habits right from the notifications. And at the end of the day, I just have a glance at my weekly progress so I can focus on the habits and accomplish the weekly target.

The app also gives you the option to enable or disable App Badge, enabling which shows the number of uncompleted habits for that day in the app badge. You can also enable or disable Sounds and Vibrations. Momentum also lets you set a Daily reminder, so you can set a reminder for the end of the day to have a look at your daily progress.

Free version of Momentum lets you add three habits. Upgrading to premium allows you add unlimited habits, iCloud syncing, Touch ID support and Data export as CSV. So if you upgrade to premium, you can check off your habits from Momentum’s Mac app as well. Personally I think that if you’re really serious in forming new habits then free version might be enough for you.

Wild Weather for iOS

We’ve lots of weather apps in App Store but most of them don’t come with an interface that you can call gorgeous. I’ve not used all, but some and I ended up using the stock Weather app in iOS because I couldn’t find the one for me. While browsing through my Dribbble feed last week, I came across this shot by Mark Hendriks. I thought it was just a concept shot of a weather app when I first saw the shot but after I jumped to the shot page, it mentioned that it is an actual app which is going to be in beta soon.

It’s been a while since I’ve been beta testing this weather app called Wild Weather, which is now live on App Store. The app is simple and comes with lots of beautiful hand-drawn illustrations for every type of weather.

When you first launch Wild Weather, it’ll ask for permission for accessing your location. Once you allow it to use your location, it’ll show your weather temperature with textual description of the weather on the top of the screen. The background is dynamic in the app, so it shows light background in the day and switches to dark in the night. You’ll also see beautiful illustrations in the background which change automatically depending on if it’s day or night. The subtle animations in the background makes the app look really nice.

You can see detailed weather information by swiping up. The app shows precipitation, wind speed and wind direction with a textual description of today’s overall weather which is nice. It also shows three-day forecast at the bottom with low and high temperature information.

This is enough information I expect from a Weather app and I think I’m going to stick with Wild Weather for sometime. I like the way everything’s designed in the app, some things could be made better but overall I like the app.

Wild Weather is available on App Store for $1.99.

10 Awesome iPhone Wallpapers

Before iPhone 6 which I bought almost a month back, I had an Android phone and it allowed me customize almost every aspect of the system, be it icons, font or layout. I used to change my home screen setups almost every week. Allowing customizations is where iOS lack as apart from allowing users to change the wallpaper and re-arrange the icons, there’s almost nothing a user like me can do to customize the interface of the phone without jailbreaking the phone.

Since I can’t do much about it, I just keep changing my phone’s wallpaper to keep the home screen look fresh. I now have a collection of some nice wallpapers which I keep rotating every 2 days or so and of all the wallpapers I have, I am sharing here 10 of my favourite ones. Apart from these, I also use WLPPR app which is an app based on the WLPPR, a site which collects satellite images.

To set any of these image as your phone’s wallpaper, you have to open Settings and navigate to Wallpapers and then tap on “Choose a New Wallpaper”. Alternatively, you can also open the image in Photos app and then tap on the share icon, and then tap on “Use as Wallpaper”. These wallpapers don’t have exact wallpaper resolution but you can crop the images while setting them as wallpaper.

Numi — A Minimal Calculator App for Mac

Numi is newly released Calculator Mac app designed by Dmitry Nikolaev which lets you make simple computations with ease. Unlike most other Calculator apps, Numi which is currently in beta doesn’t sport lots of buttons for numbers and operations on the screen. Instead, it just shows you a plain window with a white background where you can write calculations and text combined.

Numi, apart from simple operations like additions and multiplications, also features functions such as roots, percentages etc. and not only this, Numi also supports units conversion. It currently supports Currency, Length, Area, Volume, Time, Temperature and Data Size units. You can calculate things in multiple ways, like for addition, you can write “5 + 9” or also “5 plus 9”. It also lets you define variables and use them later in the calculations.

The best thing about the app is its simplicity. Also, the way it allows computations is unique, you can combine text with calculations and it will still give you the correct results. Features such as defining variables and using “prev” variable for operating on previous result makes Numi one of the best calculator apps I have used.

Numi is free and can be downloaded for free from the official website. To use Numi, all you need is a Mac running OS X Yosemite.

Stream Torrents with VLC on Mac Without Any App

When Popcorn Time was released, it quickly got popular because of its functionality of playing video files from torrents either in its on video player or in VLC Media Player or on TV through Chromecast. Currently, there are two versions of Popcorn Time on the web. The original Popcorn Time apart from streaming movies, also lets you play videos using Torrent links or Magnet links. This is one nice feature if you want to watch a video or movie that’s not in the app’s directory of movies or shows.

But if you’re one of those who don’t like to use apps, there’s another way to achieve the functionality of Popcorn Time without any app. Peerflix is a torrent streaming client for Node.js created by Mathias Buus which lets you play movies or video files from torrents to VLC Media Player on Mac.

Peerflix lets you stream any torrent right from the Terminal app. All you need to use Peerflix is have Node.js installed on your system. Once you install Node.js, you can use the following command to install Peerflix on your Mac.

npm install -g peerflix

Now, all you have to do is copy a torrent magnet link or the link to torrent file and use the link in the following format to start streaming the video or movie. Also make sure that you have VLC media player installed on your Mac.

The “–vlc” option makes sure that VLC Media Player is automatically opened when the video is ready to stream. If you don’t add that, it will start caching the video but it will not open the player. In this case, you’ll have to enter the local address it shows at the top in the “Open Network” option in the VLC Media Player. You can also stream just the audio from the videos. For that, you have to use the following command.

peerflix "http://some-torrent/music.torrent" -a --vlc

Not only this, there are lots of other options available which you can view using the “peerflix -help” command. By default, Peerflix plays the biggest file in the Torrent but you can use options to change the file. It also lets you load a subtitle file.

While streaming the video file, it shows you some information in the Terminal app such as the download speed, the amount of data downloaded and uploaded etc. It also shows a network address which you can use to play the video not only in VLC Media Player but also in other video players which support streaming from network addresses.

Popcorn Time also uses Peerflix to stream torrents. There’s a similar Torrent Streaming plus Chromecast client called Peercast by the same developer. If your Mac and Chromecast are on the same WiFi, you can use Peercast to stream videos from magnet links or torrent links directly to your TV. I haven’t tried it, but since you can install Node.js on Windows, Peerflix should work on Windows and other platforms as well.

Amazing Double Exposure Animal Portraits

Swipes is a Beautiful To-Do List App

When it comes to To-do lists, I use and recommend Wunderlist which I have been using several years now. The service and its features are incredible and the developers keep on adding new features which is awesome. Also since it is available for almost all platforms plus as a web app, Wunderlist gives no reason to not to use it. But there are some other apps too which have nice set of features, like Todoist and Any.do.

Swipes is a really beautiful To-Do and Task list app available for iPhone, iPad, Android and also as a web app. I first downloaded the app on my Android after seeing the screenshots. When I first launched the app, I was greeted with a beautiful Material design interface with a floating plus icon at the bottom right.

The app comes with a three-screen layout with the center screen for Today’s tasks, left screen for Later tasks and right screen for Completed tasks. The default is the center screen which shows Today’s tasks and you can navigate to other screens by just swiping towards left or right. Adding a task is easy, just tap the plus icon and enter the Task. You can also add tags to the tasks. On the Today screen, you can swipe to right on a task to mark it as complete, or you can swipe to left to save the task for a later date.

The app looks minimal and the transitions in the app are smooth and awesome. Swipes also lets you add integrations, which currently includes Evernote and Email. Google Calendar and Dropbox integrations will be added soon. Swipes comes with minimal settings, like you can enable notifications, vibrations and change the theme to dark or light.

Swipes is available for free on Google Play Store and iOS App Store.

Messenger App Brings New Facebook Messenger to Mac

Facebook wants to turn Facebook Messenger into a platform and to start with that, they made a dedicated web app over at Messenger.com which is just the messenger part of your Facebook account. The new Facebook Messenger web app looks close to its iOS and Android apps.

But if you are like me, who don’t like to use web apps and who always try to find app alternatives for using such websites, there’s a new Mac app which lets you use Facebook’s new Messenger site as a desktop app. The app is called Messenger and is created by Rasmus Andersson. Although Messenger Mac app is just the new Messenger site with a Mac app wrapper around it, it looks nice.

You can do anything using the Messenger app which you can do on Facebook Messenger web app. You can create new conversations, send messages, photos and stickers to your friends. The only thing you can’t do on the Mac app is start a phone call or video call, which you can do on the web app. The app also lets you enable or disable Desktop notifications.

The app is good but it also have bugs, like it crashes sometimes. There’s another app which gives the same functionality and it is called Chat. I’ve used both the apps and I found Messenger for Mac to be better than the Chat app.

Scenery for Mac

I use Mockups a lot and many of my app reviews like this one have screenshots which are made using mockups that good folks share over at Behance and Dribbble.Though it isn’t that hard to use Mockups in Photoshop, all you need to do is just replace the screenshot in the smart object, but for some who don’t or haven’t used Photoshop may find it a bit hard.

Scenery is a new Mac app by A Color Bright that lets you quickly create realistic mockups to showcase your app and designs. The best thing about Scenery is that it makes it really simple to make mockups, all you have to do is just drag-n-drop your screenshot and it will automatically create gorgeous mockups for you.

Although the app is free and comes with a Free Starter Pack which includes 3 free templates, all the other template packs are premium. In order to use your desired template, you will need to buy the template pack first. Using the app is really simple, just drag-n-drop your screenshot on the app and it will update the sample mockups with your screenshots. Now just click on the save icon at the bottom right of your favourite mockup to save the photo. Once it is done generating your photo, you can choose where to save your photo. Scenery app generates photos in high-resolution which is nice.

Currently, the app include shots of some popular devices including iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Nexus 5 and HTC One M8. The photos generated through Scenery app can be used commercially and have unrestricted license.

Scenery is available free and can be downloaded from the official website.

How to Restore Default Icons on Mac

OS X Yosemite comes with a whole new flat design and many of the existing apps are yet to be updated to match Yosemite’s design and aesthetics. We can’t do much to change app’s design but OS X allows us to change the icons of the apps. You can use an app called LiteIcon or you can change the icons of apps manually using this guide.

I recently posted about the beautiful Glacier Icons for Yosemite and I was using those icons till yesterday. I got bored with Glacier icons and wanted to switch to default app icons. One way to do this which I knew was to drag the original icon in the app’s icon in “Get Info” window of the app. Though it requires that you have the original icon backed up. The another way is to use LiteIcon app which automatically stores a copy of original icon before you change the icon of an app.

A better and much easier way to restore default icon of an app is to select the app in Applications folder, press “Cmd + I” or right-click and “Get Info” to open the Get Info window of the app. Now to restore the default icon, all you have to do is select the app’s icon at the top(not the icon displayed under Preview section) and hit the delete button.

This will restore the default icon of the app. In case of restoring icons of system apps like Safari, Launchpad or System Preferences, it will ask for your password. In case of third-party apps, it may or may not ask for the authentication.

The New MacBook

Apple held a special event on March 9 at Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco and they announced an all new 12-inch MacBook line in the event.Apple is calling the new 12-inch Macbook just MacBook. The new MacBook is the thinnest and most efficient MacBook Apple has ever made.

Size, Weight and Display

The new MacBook is the slimmest MacBook by Apple and is just 13.1 mm thin, which is 24% thinner than the 11-inch MacBook Air. The 12-inch MacBook is super light in terms of weight and weighs just 2 pounds which is incredibly light.

12-inch MacBook packs LED-backlit retina display with a resolution of 2304-by-1440 pixels at 226 pixels per inch. That’s more than 3.3 million pixels on the screen.

The New Keyboard

MacBook features an all new full-size keyboard which is designed ground up. Traditional keyboards use Scissor mechanism which makes the button wobble when pressed from a corner. MacBook’s keyboard comes with a newly invented Butterfly mechanism which not only makes the typing experience better by reducing the key wobbling but also makes the keyboard more stable and responsive that takes up less vertical space.

The new Keyboard also includes individual LED under each key to improve the backlight. The LEDs glow at uniform brightness so as to make the characters look more sharp and clear. These LEDs also add minimal lighting around the keycap.

Force Touch Trackpad

New MacBook’s trackpad isn’t the trackpad that comes with MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, it is a totally new trackpad that Apple is calling Force Touch trackpad. Force Touch trackpad in the new MacBook includes four force sensors underneath the trackpad which detect the pressure you’re applying. This allows the trackpad do more when you Force Touch the trackpad. In OS X Yosemite, you can apply this Force Touch on the trackpad to do some quick actions such as adding an event in the calendar or previewing a file in Finder.

There’s also a Taptic engine underneath the trackpad which allows it to detect a click anywhere on the surface. The Taptic engine also provides haptic feedback when you perform certain tasks in OS X.

Terraced Battery Cell

MacBook’s batteries are designed in sheet structure so as to increase the number of battery cells that can be made fit in the MacBook enclosure. Traditional batteries are rectangular in shape and they usually leave unused space in a curved enclosure. This nice placement of battery allows the placement of 35% more battery cells which allows the new MacBook to deliver all-day battery life.

USB-C Port

Apart from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, the MacBook offers only one port for connectivity and charging. The USB-C port is an all-in-one port. This USB-C port can be used for charging the MacBook, USB 3 data transfer and video output. The new connector is reversible and is one-third the size of current USB port.

Pricing and Availability

The new MacBook will come in three colors, Silver, Gold and Space Gray. It will come in two variants, the one with 256GB flash storage will cost $1299 and the 512GB model will cost $1599. The new MacBook will start shipping on April 10.

Embark — A Minimal New Tab Page for Chrome

I used to use Safari as my default browser but it lagged a lot for me and so I switched to Google Chrome again. I love Chrome and with its great performance and availability of huge number of extensions and apps, I don’t think I will be switching to any other browser. I haven’t used any New Tab extension for Chrome until I came across Embark.

Embark is a minimalistic new tab page for Chrome designed by James Moss. Embark replaces your Chrome’s default new tab page with a new page that shows a digital clock with a beautiful background that changes every time you open a new tab.

Embark is just like Momentum but with less features and loads very fast. You can also tweak the New tab page. Embark lets you switch between 12-hour and 24-hour time format. You can also change the transparency of the border and the time from the Embark settings page. It also allows you to display the current date and you can also change the format of the date. You can also change the position of the date which can by either at the top or the bottom of the page.
