One of the easiest places to begin is with something you already love. Take a photo of something that makes you smile, or pull out a favorite piece you haven't enjoyed in a while. You might be surprised at how meaningful this is!

Capture a Favorite Book or Activity

Some of the best memories are made during everyday activities. Reading a favorite book together, working on a puzzle, building with LEGO bricks, or playing a board game may seem ordinary today, but those are often the moments you'll treasure later.

Play doesn't have to stay in the playroom. Imagination can show up anywhere, even while you're traveling. I love taking LEGO minifigures with me on trips and photographing them in unexpected places. A trail, a national park, a scenic overlook, or a favorite landmark instantly becomes part of a memorable story. Some of the best memories are made around a table. A favorite puzzle, a family board game, or a card game played over and over again can become just as memorable as a special outing.

Take a photo of a game or puzzle you've been enjoying. It could be something you've been working on for weeks, a favorite family tradition, or a new game everyone is excited to play. The photo doesn't have to capture the finished result. Sometimes a puzzle in progress or a game halfway through tells the better story.

As you document the memory, think about what made it special. Was it the challenge of solving it? The conversations around the table? The laughter, friendly competition, or quiet time spent together? Often the story is about much more than the game itself. It's about the experience.

Photograph a Family Game Night

Some of my favorite memories aren't made on big adventures. They're made sitting across the table from someone I love. My son and I regularly play board games together, and those simple evenings have become a meaningful part of our story.

Take a photo during your next family game night. It could be a favorite board game, a deck of cards, a puzzle in progress, or the final moments of a close match. You don't need everyone to stop and pose. Sometimes a hand reaching for a game piece or a board halfway through the game tells the story even better.

I’ll scroll through my photos, check my calendar, and piece together the moments that made this month memorable. It’s not complicated. I’m just gathering what is already there. The places I explored, the memories I made, the things I learned, and the stories I don’t want to forget. That’s really all a monthly roundup is. A few photos, a few notes, and a simple way to capture what life looked like this month.

Later on, those small pieces are the ones you’ll be glad you saved. I’ve been creating monthly roundups since January 2006, and it has become one of the most treasured parts of my memory keeping routine. Looking back through past roundups always reminds me how many meaningful moments fill each month, even when no major trip or vacation happened.

One of the things I love about documenting travel is that every trip has a story. There are the expected big moments like famous landmarks and bucket-list destinations. But there are also the stories we never could have planned.

The flat tire that altered your route. The local restaurant that ended up being the best meal of the trip. The place you almost skipped but decided to visit anyway. The conversation that made everyone laugh for the next three hours.

Those are the moments that usually end up in my scrapbook pages, journals, and photo books because they are the moments that capture what the trip actually felt like.

The Best Travel Photos Are Not Always the Obvious Ones

One thing I have learned over the years is that the photos I am most grateful for are not always the postcard shots. I love photographing beautiful scenery and famous places, but I also love the smaller details. Travel snacks, maps, hotel rooms, dashboard views, and the people I am traveling with. Travel Encourages Curiosity

One of my favorite parts of traveling, is that you find yourself wondering what's down a side street, what's inside a little shop, where a trail might lead, or what story is behind an old building. Those little moments of curiosity often become the most memorable parts of a trip. I've found that some of my favorite photos and stories happened when I followed a side quest instead of sticking to the plan. Creativity works the same way. It grows when we're willing to explore, ask questions, and stay open to unexpected discoveries.

If I had to choose one photo that perfectly represents curiosity, it might be this one. Venice is a city that seems designed to make you wonder what's around the next corner. Every narrow street, bridge, and canal invites exploration. I took this photo while wandering through the city with no particular destination in mind, simply following whatever looked interesting.

That's one of the reasons I think travel and creativity are so closely connected. Travel encourages us to ask questions and stay open to discovery. What is down that street? Where does that bridge lead? What's hidden around the next corner? Some of the most memorable moments of a trip happen when we step away from the plan and allow ourselves to explore.

Travel Gives You New Perspectives

Exploring the world shows us that there is more than one way to live, create, eat, and experience life. We notice the ways that color, space, food, or routines compare. This can influence the photos we take, the stories we want to tell, and the details we notice when we come back home. Every adventure adds another layer to what we draw from when we create.

One of my favorite things about travel is the opportunity to connect with history in a more personal way. This photo is Alexander Hamilton's home, and standing in front of it made me think about how much different it feels to experience a place in person rather than just reading about it. Travel has a way of bringing stories to life. It helps us connect the dots between people, places, and events in a way that feels more real and memorable.

Travel Creates Stories Worth Telling

One of the reasons I think travel and creativity go so well together is that travel gives us so many stories to tell. As memory keepers, we're constantly looking for moments worth documenting, and travel naturally creates them. Of course there are the big moments we expect to remember, but often it's the smaller ones that stay with us. The view from a hotel window on the first morning of a trip. The funny conversation during a long drive. The unexpected detour that ended up being the highlight of the day. Finding those stories and deciding how to tell them is a creative act. Whether you're making a scrapbook page, writing in a journal, creating a photo book, or putting together a monthly roundup, you're taking experiences and turning them into something meaningful. Travel simply gives us a lot of material to work with.

My husband was itching for a Coke Zero, so he called room service and asked if they had one. They brought it to him in a silver bucket. What a presentation! This was one of those small travel moments that probably wouldn't make anyone's must-see list, yet it's exactly the kind of thing that helps tell the story of a trip.

One of the easiest ways to become more creative is to become more observant. Travel naturally encourages this because we're surrounded by things that feel new. We notice different colors, textures, architecture, signs, landscapes, simply because we are in a different location. The more we practice paying attention, the more material we have to work with when we create. I love the small details that helped me remember what a place actually felt like.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is seeing how light changes a place. The same pool and lawn looked completely different at sunrise and sunset. Spending time surrounded by new scenery gave me the opportunity to pay attention to details like light and sky. As a photographer and memory keeper, those small observations often become the stories and images I remember long after the trip is over.

Travel Inspires New Ideas

Sometimes creativity needs a change of scenery. Being somewhere different exposes us to new adventures, designs, foods, traditions, and ways of thinking. You might see a scene you want to use on a scrapbook page, a photography idea you'd like to try, or a story you feel inspired to document. Having a collection of small ideas gathered along the way can continue influencing our projects long after we return home.

David Byrne and his crew are wildly creative, and watching this concert definitely inspired me. I found myself wanting to be more bold with color and creative projects. One of my favorite parts of the show was when he shared photos, videos, and images that went with the music. I loved seeing the pictures that he took of the neon graveyard in Las Vegas. So cool!

By stepping outside your normal routine and paying attention to what you discover, you encourage curiosity. Those experiences become part of the creative well we draw from every time we pick up a camera, open a journal, or sit down to document our lives. That's one of the reasons I think travel and creativity are so closely connected. The more we explore, the more stories, memories, and ideas we have to bring into our creative work.

Where and How to Use These Photos

You don’t need to use every prompt. Pick the ones that fit your life, your travels, and the stories you want to tell. Even one meaningful photo can become the starting point for a great memory-keeping project.

Add your photos to a scrapbook page, a journal spread, a travel album, or your June roundup. Pair each image with a few sentences about where you were, who you were with, or what made that moment memorable. Sometimes the smallest details become the most interesting stories later.

Travel photos are also perfect for creating themed pages. You might build a layout around a favorite destination, a road trip, a special meal, or a collection of views from hotel rooms and airplane windows. What Is a Monthly Roundup?

A monthly roundup is a simple record of your life from the past month. It can be a few sentences or several pages. The goal is to capture your thoughts, favorites, and experiences so you can look back and see your story unfold over time.

You can create your roundup in whatever format works best for you. Some people prefer digital layouts, others use notebooks or planners, and some create blog posts. What matters most is taking a few minutes to reflect before a new month begins.

Pro tip: Start small. You don’t need to include everything—just choose what you want to remember.

Roundup Prompts for May

Start paying attention to what feels worth remembering

You do not need to document everything. You just need to notice what stands out. As the month winds down, pay attention to moments that make you stop and think. Something that made you laugh. A small win. A routine that felt good. A challenge you moved through. These are often the moments you will want to remember later.

If something pops into your head and you think, I want to remember this, that is your cue to jot it down or take a photo.

Take a few photos if you haven’t already

If you are anything like me, there are months when photos happen easily and months when they do not. If this month has been a little light on pictures, now is a great time to grab a few before it ends.

You can photograph everyday things. Your routine. Your space. A walk. Something you worked on. A cozy moment. Even one or two photos can help anchor your memories when you sit down to do your roundup.

If there is something specific you want to remember, make a point to document it now. A photo does not need to be perfect. It just needs to exist.

Jot down notes as you go

You do not need full journal entries right now. A few words are enough.

You can jot notes on a calendar, in a notes app, or in a small notebook. Write down things like what you watched, what you read, where you went, or how you felt. These little reminders are incredibly helpful later.

If writing feels like too much, voice memos work just as well. Talk it out while you are driving or walking. You can always listen back later and pull out the details you want to include.

Use what you already share

Your social media posts can be a great memory keeping tool. Instagram captions, stories, and even comments can help jog your memory. Scrolling back through your posts at the end of the month often brings back details you might have forgotten.

If you share weekly updates or small moments online, you are already doing part of the work. Your roundup just brings it all together in one place.

Keep it simple

Preparing for a roundup does not need to be another task on your list. Think of it as gently collecting breadcrumbs you can follow later. A photo here. A note there. A quick reminder saved for the end of the month.

Your roundup does not need to look like anyone else’s. It does not need to be long or detailed. It just needs to reflect your month. A little preparation helps you tell that story with less stress and more clarity.

I read Craft a Life You Love by Amy Tangerine back in 2019. I decided to pick it back up again this month since it is such a great fit with the theme of creativity. I’ve followed Amy’s work for several years, but I didn’t know much about her background or how she got started in the scrapbooking industry. Her story is fascinating and her philosophy on crafting is so refreshing. I felt so inspired after I read this book that I ordered another copy and sent it to my daughter.

I marked several quotes in the book that I wanted to remember and I decided that the best way to incorporate these into my life would be to do something creative with them. So I turned these thoughts into pieces of word art.

It’s the Ideas You Make Happen

I love that her emphasis is the ideas that you make happen. I think the greatest enemy of creativity is perfectionism. When we feel like we have to be perfect, we are afraid to create. Also, you do not need a perfectly styled craft room, expensive supplies, or hours of free time to live creatively. Most creativity happens in small pockets of everyday life.

The Lessons You Have Learned

I had never thought about blame being a roadblock to creativity until I read this book. It’s not productive and the blame game robs us of focusing on what we are really capable of. There are plenty of excuses to let the bad people and circumstances in our life bring us down. I like her focus on turning these into learning opportunities and actually being grateful for the blessing we received from the lesson of what we DON’T want to be.

Proof of a Good Life

This might be my most favorite quote of the entire book. This is why I love to scrapbook! This quote is also a good reminder that creativity has value beyond the finished project. We are not just making pages. We are preserving proof that there was joy, connection, growth, and beauty in our everyday lives.

Measure Success by the Distance You Have Traveled

It is very easy to measure success by unfinished goals. The projects still sitting on your desk, or the photos you still want to organize. When we only look ahead, it can feel like we are constantly behind. Creativity, and life in general, are built one small step at a time. When you stop and look backward for a moment, you usually realize there is more progress than you thought. Your skills have improved. You have learned new things. You have made progress!

I also think this quote fits memory keeping in a meaningful way. Scrapbooking, journaling, and photography help us see the distance we have already traveled. They give us proof of growth that is easy to forget in everyday life. Success is not only the big finish line. Sometimes it is simply continuing to show up, keep creating, and keep moving forward.

They experimented. They made mistakes. They created things that probably did not turn out the way they hoped. That is all part of the process.

I love this quote because it gives us permission to begin before we feel ready. You do not have to be amazing at something to enjoy it. You just have to start.

So many of us worry that we are running out of ideas or that we have not been creative enough lately. But creativity often grows through use. The more we make, write, photograph, journal, color, or experiment, the more ideas seem to appear. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started again.

Even small creative habits count. A quick notebook sketch, a scrapbook page, or a photo taken during an ordinary day. Those little moments help keep creativity active in our lives.

You could also photograph your tools. The things you reach for without thinking. Your favorite pen, your scissors, your current stack of supplies. These small details say a lot about what you’ve been working on.

Not every creative photo has to be about a project in progress. Sometimes the story is in the things you surround yourself with. A bookshelf filled with favorite books. LEGO flowers sitting on the counter. Supplies organized in a way that makes you excited to create. These photos help document your interests, your style, and the little pieces of everyday life that shape your routines.

I have a lot of creative interests that I don’t get to very often, but that doesn’t make them any less important. I love coloring, and these doodle-style coloring books are my favorite. I haven’t pulled them out in months, but these prompts made me think about what brings me creative joy, and that inspired me to take a photo.

Capture Your Creative Habits

Think about the things you reach for over and over again. Maybe it is your favorite pen. A drawer full of colored pencils. The markers you always use for journaling or planning. Maybe it is the art supplies you keep nearby to use when you have a creative moment.

Look for All Kinds of Creativity

We tend to think of creativity showing up on a canvas or a scrapbook page. Have you thought about how you arrange items in your home? How you dress? How you cook? There are lots of ways to be creative!

Where and how to use these photos

You can use a photo from each prompt, or just one that speaks to you. Add it to a scrapbook page, a journal spread, or your May roundup. Pair it with a simple line about why you took it or what it means to you in the moment.

Remember…

You don’t need to take all of these photos. Pick a few that fit your life right now. When you sit down to do your monthly roundup, these images will help you remember what you were making, what you were trying, and what felt interesting at the time.
