When we’re children, wonder seems to come naturally. Everything is still new, so there’s always something to examine, ask about, collect, or get excited over. I see this with my grandsons all the time. Things I might walk right past can completely capture their attention. I don’t think we lose that ability as adults, but it can be easier to overlook. There are still plenty of things that fascinate me. I love discovering an incredible view while traveling, noticing the details in a beautiful old building, finding something interesting in nature, seeing a creative idea I’ve never encountered before, or experiencing a place I’ve read about for years.

Wonder can also be much smaller than that. It might be an amazing sunset, the first signs of a new season, something funny a child says, a tiny detail you notice on a walk, or even a completely ordinary thing that suddenly catches your attention.

Reflection Questions for October

Use these questions to think about what brings a sense of wonder into your own life.

What has amazed you lately?
Think about something that made you stop, look closer, or want to know more.

What do you notice now that you might have overlooked in the past?
Think of experiences that have taught you to appreciate certain details, places, people, or parts of everyday life differently.

Where do you most often find a sense of wonder?
Consider nature, travel, art, books, music, creativity, science, history, family, or anywhere else you tend to find it.

What do the children in your life notice that adults often miss?
If you spend time with children, think about what captures their attention and what you've noticed because of them.

Creative Ideas for Memory Keeping

A Sense of Wonder is especially fun to explore through photography and memory keeping because so much of it begins with noticing something.

You could:

• Make a page about something that recently amazed you

• Document something beautiful you noticed in an ordinary place

• Create a list of things you still want to see or experience

• Tell the story of a place that exceeded your expectations

• Photograph something from a child's point of view

• Create a collection of small details that caught your attention

These don't need to be spectacular moments. In fact, I think it would be interesting to deliberately document some very small ones. Photograph the unusual leaf you found on a walk, the way the light falls across a room, something your child stopped to examine, or a detail in a familiar place that you've somehow never noticed before.

Add a Creative Touch

Keep Looking

One thing I like about focusing on a monthly theme is that it changes what I notice. Once I start thinking about something, I begin seeing examples of it everywhere. I'm going to pay more attention to what makes me reach for my camera, what sends me down a rabbit hole because I want to know more, and what makes me stop for a few extra seconds instead of moving on to the next thing.

I'll scroll through my photos, check my calendar, and gather the stories I want to remember. I might find a book I was reading, something new I learned, a project I worked on, time spent with family, or an ordinary photo that brings back a whole day. A monthly roundup doesn't need to include everything that happened. I just want to save enough of the details to remember what life looked like this month.

Those details can be part of your September story too.

How to Gather Your September Memories

Before you start creating your roundup, spend a few minutes gathering everything you might want to include.

Look through your calendar, journal entries, messages, and social media posts to remind yourself what happened. Scroll through your September photos and favorite the ones you might want to use. Don't forget your screenshots. They can hold all sorts of little pieces of the month, including funny texts, things you wanted to remember, purchases, recipes, books, interesting articles, and random things you looked up.

You can also collect physical keepsakes such as cards, ticket stubs, programs, notes, or receipts. Scan or photograph anything you want to include in a digital roundup. And, of course, make sure the photos you want to keep are backed up somewhere safe.

Pro tip: Create an album or folder called September Roundup and add things to it as you find them. When you're ready to create your roundup, everything will already be together.

How to Complete Your Monthly Roundup

Now that you’ve gathered your materials, it’s time to create. There is no right or wrong way to make a roundup.

• Make a simple list using the prompts above

• Design a scrapbook layout or digital collage

• Write in a bullet journal, notebook, or planner

• Share a post on your blog or social media account

Begin Your September Roundup

Take a few minutes to look back at September and think about what you would like to remember. Include the bigger events if you had them, but don't overlook the ordinary parts of the month. What you were reading, what you were learning, where you spent your time, what you were working on, and who you were with can tell just as much of the story.

That's what I love about doing these roundups. Month by month, all of those details add up to a record of what my life actually looked like.

So obviously, I love the idea of documenting learning as part of memory keeping. We usually record the big events and obvious milestones, but our interests say a lot about who we are at a particular point in life. Our story includes the books we’re reading, the subjects we keep looking up, the hobbies we’re trying, and the skills we’re practicing. Years later, I think it would be interesting to look back and remember what had my attention at the time, especially the things that felt ordinary enough that I never thought to write them down.

Document What Has Your Attention

One of the easiest places to start is with whatever you find yourself interested in right now. I can go through phases where I read everything I can find about a particular subject. Other times, I focus on something I'm doing. Before a trip, for example, I spend a lot of time researching the places we're going to visit. I want to know about the history, museums, neighborhoods, landmarks, and anything else that might help me understand what I'm going to see.

These interests can be surprisingly temporary. Something can occupy a huge amount of my attention for a few months and then slowly be replaced by something else. Unless I've documented it in some way, I may barely remember how interested I once was in it.

A memory keeping page about this doesn't need to be complicated. You could photograph the books you're reading, save a screenshot of something you've been researching, make a list of your current interests, or write a few sentences about a subject you can't seem to stop reading about. I think it would be fun to have a record of these things from different years and see which interests disappeared and which ones stayed with me.

Remember What It Was Like to Be a Beginner

There are plenty of finished projects in my scrapbooks and photo library, but I don't have nearly as many pictures of myself figuring out how to make them. That's something I'd like to do a better job of documenting.

Learning a creative skill usually involves a lot of experimenting. I've spent countless hours figuring out Illustrator and other design programs over the years. Even now, I regularly run into something I don't know how to do. I'll look it up, try a few things, make mistakes, and eventually add one more skill to everything I've learned before.

The same thing happens with hobbies. Think about the first time you tried a craft you now do without thinking, worked on a difficult LEGO build, attempted a new recipe, learned a game, picked up a camera, or started using a new piece of technology. The messy middle of learning can be easy to overlook once you know what you're doing.

I'd like to take more pictures during that stage. A computer screen with a project in progress, supplies scattered across a table, an instruction book beside a half-built project, or even something that didn't turn out the way I hoped would tell a different story than a photograph of the finished result. A few sentences about what I was trying to learn would make the memory even better.

Remember Who You Learned From

Some of the things we know came from books or classes, but so much of what we learn comes from other people. There are things I do today because someone showed me how years ago, and sometimes I don't even think about where I learned them anymore.

That opens up an entirely different kind of story to preserve. Who taught you to cook something your family still makes? Who helped you learn to drive? Was there a teacher who made you interested in a subject you still love? Maybe a parent or grandparent taught you a hobby, or your own children introduced you to something you never would have discovered on your own.

I especially like this idea because learning goes in every direction as we get older. We teach our children and grandchildren, but they teach us plenty too. Friends share what they know. Family members introduce us to new interests. Sometimes a five-minute conversation with someone changes the way we do something for years.

Those stories may not naturally show up in a monthly roundup or vacation scrapbook, so they may need a little more effort to preserve. A photo of the person, a memory about something they taught you, and a few details about why it stayed with you would be enough.

A Different Kind of Timeline

One thing I like about looking at learning this way is that it gives us another way to see how we've changed over time. If I could go back and make a list of what interested me every September for the past twenty years, I'm sure I'd find some things that make me laugh, some I'd completely forgotten, and others that are still part of my life.

We already create timelines with birthdays, vacations, homes, jobs, and family milestones. Our interests and abilities create a quieter timeline alongside all of those things. We can see what we used to know nothing about, what we eventually became good at, what we tried and abandoned, and what we loved enough to keep doing.

Remember...

The more I think about learning as part of memory keeping, the more surprised I am that I haven't documented it more often. I have plenty of photographs that show where I've been and what I've done, but they don't always show what I was thinking about, trying to understand, or working hard to learn at the time.

I'm going to try to pay more attention to that. Every once in a while, I want to stop and ask myself what I'm learning right now and save the answer somewhere. It might be a scrapbook page, a few photos, or just a note in my monthly roundup. I know that the future me will really appreciate that someday!

Keep this theme close

Follow a question. Pick up a book. Try something unfamiliar. Ask someone to teach you how they do something. Give yourself permission to be a beginner.

We don't have to stop being students just because we're no longer sitting in a classroom. There will always be something new to discover, and I think that's one of the things that makes life interesting.

The last few weeks have been unusually full around here. We've had a lot happening in our family, and I've also been dealing with a hand injury that has made spending long stretches of time designing more difficult than usual. As much as I wanted to have the new collection ready to welcome September, I finally had to admit that I needed a little more time.

In a way, it feels like a fitting ending to August's theme of Rhythms & Routines. Routines are wonderful, but real life doesn't always cooperate with our plans. Sometimes the rhythm changes, and we have to change along with it.

The good news is that the September collection is well underway, and I'm really enjoying how it is coming together. The theme is Learning, and the collection is called Lifelong Learning. It's inspired by books, curiosity, discovery, creativity, and the idea that we're never really finished learning.

Rather than rushing through the last pieces just to meet an arbitrary date, I'm giving myself a little extra time to finish it the way I want to.

Start With the Way You Begin Your Day

Morning routines can tell us a surprising amount about our lives. Maybe you start by checking your phone, opening the blinds, feeding a pet, getting kids ready for school, exercising, or sitting down at your computer. Whatever you do regularly is part of the story.

Take a photo of something that represents the beginning of your day. It doesn't need to be a beautifully styled morning scene. Your shoes by the door, breakfast on the counter, an alarm clock, or the view from your bedroom window might tell the story much better.

Think about the details you would want to remember if your mornings looked completely different five or ten years from now.

Photograph a Place Where Everyday Life Happens

We tend to photograph beautiful destinations and special places, but what about the places we see every day? The kitchen table, your desk, the family room, the backyard, or even the driver's seat of your car can become an important part of your story.

Photograph one of the places where you spend a lot of time right now. Don't worry too much about cleaning everything up first. The things sitting on the counter, the project spread across the table, or the shoes by the door may be exactly what makes the photograph meaningful later.

These familiar spaces change right along with our lives, and photographs can preserve details we wouldn't otherwise remember.

Capture a Routine You Share With Someone

Some routines become special because of the people who are part of them. Family dinners, walks around the neighborhood, bedtime stories, game nights, errands, or afternoons spent with grandchildren may happen so regularly that they don't seem unusual enough to photograph. But that's exactly what makes them worth documenting.

Take a photo of something you regularly do with someone you care about. You don't necessarily need a posed picture. Two shadows walking together, hands reaching across a game board, or everyone's places around the dinner table can tell the story in a much more interesting way.

Photograph Something You Keep Coming Back To

Our hobbies and interests have rhythms of their own. Maybe there's always a puzzle somewhere in your house, a stack of books beside your bed, a LEGO project underway, a garden you're constantly tending, or a creative project waiting on your desk.

Photograph something you return to regularly. These interests are part of everyday life too, and they can say a lot about who you are during a particular season.

I especially like this kind of photo because interests change. Something that feels like such a normal part of your life today may eventually become one of those things you look back on and think, "I remember when I did that all the time."

Photograph Something That Won't Always Look This Way

This might be my favorite prompt for the month.

Look around at the routines you have right now and think about which ones are temporary. It could be holding a child's hand on your daily walk, toys scattered around when the grandchildren visit, driving someone to school, caring for a pet, working from a particular desk, or gathering everyone around the table. Take a photo of one of those ordinary moments.

We don't always recognize a routine as a memory while we're living it. Sometimes it's only later that we realize how much we miss something we once did all the time.

Where and How to Use These Photos

You don't need to photograph every prompt. Choose the ones that fit your life and help tell the story of what your days look like right now. Even a few photographs of ordinary routines can add details to your memory keeping that you might otherwise forget.

Add them to a scrapbook page, journal, monthly album, or your August roundup. Pair your photos with a few notes about how often you do something, who usually joins you, how long it has been part of your routine, or why you enjoy it.

You could also create a page around a single routine or tradition. Document a typical morning, family game night, your current creative routine, what evenings look like at your house, or the places you find yourself returning to week after week.

The point isn't to make everyday life look more exciting than it is. It's to preserve what it actually looks like.

Remember…

The things you do every day are easy to overlook because they're so familiar. Your favorite chair, the books on your nightstand, what's sitting on the kitchen counter, the route you walk, the projects on your desk, and the people who regularly share those moments with you are all part of your story.

For a long time, I thought of routines as the background of life. They were simply the things that happened between vacations, birthdays, and other milestones. But the older I get, the more I realize those routines are the story. When I look back through old scrapbook pages and monthly roundups, of course I'm happy to see the trips we took and the special occasions we celebrated. But I'm just as grateful for the pages that remind me what everyday life looked like. The book I couldn't put down, the puzzle that sat on the dining room table for months, or the many, many board games we've played over the years. Those moments are simple, but together they tell the story of that season of life.

Creativity has its own rhythm

The same idea shows up in my own life. I have routines that revolve around creativity. Every month I plan a new theme, design coordinating collections, write blog posts, and work on scrapbook pages. Those things have become such a regular part of my life that I hardly think about them anymore. But if I stopped doing them tomorrow, I know I'd want to remember what this season looked like and how much joy those creative routines brought me.

A different question to ask

Maybe that's one of the reasons memory keeping has become so meaningful to me. I've learned that ordinary life isn't ordinary at all. It's where most of life happens. Instead of asking yourself, What exciting thing happened this month? try asking a different question: What keeps showing up in my life right now? Maybe it's your morning walk, Friday night pizza, reading before bed, a weekly lunch with a friend, tending the garden, or walking the dog. Those routines may seem small, but they reveal so much about who you are and what this season of life looks like.

Nothing stays the same forever

The beautiful thing about routines is that they never stay the same. Children grow up, schedules change, hobbies evolve, and life moves on before we realize it. One day you'll look back and discover that the routine you thought would last forever quietly became a memory. That's one of the reasons I believe everyday life is worth documenting. Not because it's extraordinary, but because it won't always look the way it does today.

One of the easiest places to begin is with something you already love. Take a photo of something that makes you smile, or pull out a favorite piece you haven't enjoyed in a while. You might be surprised at how meaningful this is!

Capture a Favorite Book or Activity

Some of the best memories are made during everyday activities. Reading a favorite book together, working on a puzzle, building with LEGO bricks, or playing a board game may seem ordinary today, but those are often the moments you'll treasure later.

Photograph Someone Using Their Imagination

Play doesn't have to stay in the playroom. Imagination can show up anywhere, even while you're traveling. I love taking LEGO minifigures with me on trips and photographing them in unexpected places. A trail, a national park, a scenic overlook, or a favorite landmark instantly becomes part of a memorable story. It's a simple way to make photography more playful, and those photos often become some of my favorites.

Photograph a Favorite Game or Puzzle

Some of the best memories are made around a table. A favorite puzzle, a family board game, or a card game played over and over again can become just as memorable as a special outing.

Take a photo of a game or puzzle you've been enjoying. It could be something you've been working on for weeks, a favorite family tradition, or a new game everyone is excited to play. The photo doesn't have to capture the finished result. Sometimes a puzzle in progress or a game halfway through tells the better story.

As you document the memory, think about what made it special. Was it the challenge of solving it? The conversations around the table? The laughter, friendly competition, or quiet time spent together? Often the story is about much more than the game itself. It's about the experience.

Photograph a Family Game Night

Some of my favorite memories aren't made on big adventures. They're made sitting across the table from someone I love. My son and I regularly play board games together, and those simple evenings have become a meaningful part of our story.

Take a photo during your next family game night. It could be a favorite board game, a deck of cards, a puzzle in progress, or the final moments of a close match. You don't need everyone to stop and pose. Sometimes a hand reaching for a game piece or a board halfway through the game tells the story even better.

Where and How to Use These Photos

You don't need to photograph every prompt. Choose the ones that fit your life, your family, and the moments you want to remember. Even one playful photo can become the starting point for a meaningful memory-keeping project.

I’ll scroll through my photos, check my calendar, and piece together the moments that made this month memorable. It’s not complicated. I’m just gathering what is already there. The places I explored, the memories I made, the things I learned, and the stories I don’t want to forget. That’s really all a monthly roundup is. A few photos, a few notes, and a simple way to capture what life looked like this month.

Later on, those small pieces are the ones you’ll be glad you saved. I’ve been creating monthly roundups since January 2006, and it has become one of the most treasured parts of my memory keeping routine. Looking back through past roundups always reminds me how many meaningful moments fill each month, even when no major trip or vacation happened.

How to Gather Your June Memories

Before you begin creating your roundup, take a few minutes to gather everything you might want to include.

One of the things I love about documenting travel is that every trip has a story. There are the expected big moments like famous landmarks and bucket-list destinations. But there are also the stories we never could have planned.

The flat tire that altered your route. The local restaurant that ended up being the best meal of the trip. The place you almost skipped but decided to visit anyway. The conversation that made everyone laugh for the next three hours.

Those are the moments that usually end up in my scrapbook pages, journals, and photo books because they are the moments that capture what the trip actually felt like.

The Best Travel Photos Are Not Always the Obvious Ones

One thing I have learned over the years is that the photos I am most grateful for are not always the postcard shots. I love photographing beautiful scenery and famous places, but I also love the smaller details. Travel snacks, maps, hotel rooms, dashboard views, and the people I am traveling with.
